Recently bought a hondata for the r18, was curious if it did anything so made a video for everyone with Dyno results.

140 crank from a sohc 1.8 isnt bad, actually its really good. The head is a flow bottle neck, the stock exhaust is a bottle neck. The blocks shares the same bore and stroke as the gsr/c5. The exhaust valves are d series size, actually theyre the same valves, 185cc injectors probally at the peak of their duty cycle. The oem mid pipe is 1 5/8" inner diameter, .25" smaller than the gsr. Civics say ULEV on the window for a reason. A cam will make more power as the specs are close to the gsr b18c1 cam, but even still, no headwork and the cam is just pumping through a coffee straw. The Crz 6speed and the r18 share the same transmission gearset case, final drive, fd ring and clutch housing bearing, im just waiting on time to connect the 6 speed gear set to the r18 clutch housing. I also have reason to believe the l15b7 blox 56>58mm throttle body may be a viable upgrade as well as a si exhaust, a 99gsr catalyst under the car, extended down stream o2 sensor, and a megan header, downpipe with a wideband located in the original downstream o2 location. There is potential in the r18 all motor but having to live in the k series shadow made it forgotten.

Go ahead and check out my channel. This was one of the first videos in the civic. We did MUCH MUCH more to this car, about all the engine mods you could(besides boost). I've got videos for install and the another dyno a well. We did end up selling the civic though before we could get it to the right tuner, bought an evo instead haha.

Interesting. The crz tranny actually fits on an r18 8th gen ? What about a 9th gen coupe. Also how much power can it take ? The crz makes less than 140 if I'm correct so probably ain't that tough. How's your build going ?

Hood is closed and there are no fans blowing on the car on the run. Probably not ideal

Stock for my 9th Gen R18 is 142 from the factory. Its not the car itself, but best thing to do is make sure all your fluid have been changed and spark plugs and valve calibration have been done before the Dyno. You probably had the car heat soaked prior so it's not going to produce the power you where hoping for. I'm suprised they didnt put a fan up front to allow proper airflow either during the test. With the mods I have on my car cold air intake, exhaust, and Maintenance done while performing the dyno tests without Hondata I got close to around 160 without a tune on it.

Everything maintenance wise is up to date. The 140 number manufacturers give you is crank hp. The whp is about 15% less due to drivetrain loss. I'm in an R18 Civic page on FB and 120whp seems to be the number for stock cars.

That's 140 at the flywheel. 120 here is at the wheel. So converting this back to flywheel hp its very close to 140

I'm so happy to see a video that compares the two. Im looking to get the hondata, but am now curious as to what will change with more mods to that vehicle. I have a 13 Civic Lx with a short ram AFE intake and axle back borla exhaust, with a pedal throttle commander system chip. But I'm also looking at a turbo. Not sure yet, keep up the work and I hope to see another update!

Need tout keep intake un and the catback pipe 3'' not 2.5 ... That you Can reach tout stage 2 turbo dont need throttle accelerator and reste ..

I'm not surprised it made less power on the base tune, that is meant to be tuned to the specific car/mod setup you are running. Short ram intakes always generate less power than a stock intake system anyway so nothing surprising there either. R18 heads just don't flow enough air.

Its definitely worth it i gained 15hp top end and 30 whp mid range huge difference on the st i also have full bolt ons.

Your stock' ECU tune had a spike at the end hence the higher numbers :)

Good vid but basemaps arent for power they are for your car to be able to start and run till u can tune it so it "making u lose power" isnt really bad lmao

Those R18 Honda's are well tuned from factory.You can get a little more power but you have to know how to.Throwing parts at it is a waste of money in most cases.

i know a guy in a german fb group. who installed a skunk camshaft. he means, its not necessary to change the valve springs or anything else. the skunk camshaft increases the performance in vtec up to 15 percent according to the manufacturer. but he said, its important to use an oil cooler, the oil runs very hot under longer high load. minimum requirement is a 5w40 oil. the skunk camshaft is not expensive with 350€ or 380$. he means its worth it. in my case, my r18s mapping is optimized and i am really happy with it. 10 percent more hp and torque is maybe not a lot. but the engine feels better to drive. the performance rises most in low and middle rpms. teamvtec, who made the mappings is very known in germany and has a very good reputation. a honda mechanic told me, the r18 has a lot reserves and an optimized mapping is no problem for the r18. but its recommended to change oil in shorter intervals and also to check the valve clearance.

My EU Civic FN1 with r18a2 Engine have stage 3 Single plate clutch, 3kg lightweight flywheel,skunk2stage2 camshaft 200cell catalyst with modyfied invidia g200 exhaust and i'm using K-Tuner Software. Way better then before. Little Faster then an original Civic fn2 with 201 hp before clutch, flywheel and stage2 Cam install. I'm street Tune it. Waiting for the WeaponR intake manifold . after install it i think i get on a Dyno to Tune it perfektly. How much it gains , we will see.

@Cruz Ponce Weapon R intake install is not ready yet. I wait for the 70mm lmm casing Delivery. Then the intake Filter casing must bei modded whitz the 70mm lmm to Measure the length of the pipe from lmm to intake manifold. When i have all installed it must be tuned on dyno. I think maybe in summer 2021

@Cruz Ponce difficult to say how much hp it will be. It is the European ECU and it gives no reference values from other. I think maybe between 200 and 250 hp ( 140 hp Factory ) . The dyno tune get the real results. Insta: mugen_style_fn1

good base number, cant wait to see after you tune the basemap !!. Also a little FYI before you buy the cam, its about a $1200 or 14 hour job to get it put in.

Yeah I kinda agree with everyone else, there is something wrong.. or the dyno run was done incorrect. Even with people saying crank vs wheel power loss there is no way it should be running 120HP with bolt-ons and a basic tune

Great vid. If you dyno all in one day or run soon after base run. You'll get heat soak. Causing your results. I believe.

I hate that you lost power but I am putting down 218hp with hondata short ram intake, throttle body spacer and skunk 2 exhaust. Which I have tuned my hondata to my car. Oh and I have a 08 si coupe. You need to get on the forums and play around with the tuning.

The r18 starts with a lot less powe then the si. But yeah some of the stuff we read said that the r18 doesn't take well to mods anyway so it's harder to get power from them.

@@ipp2109 well you should be able to adjust timing and fuel trims and injector duty cycles. You should be able to get hopefully 15-20hp. And you can adjust your vtec engagement point. I have mine set to 4500. That works best for my mods and driving style.

@@wcsoblake85 we had someone tune the car later after a lot more mods, and still only made stock power, I think it was the result of a bad tuner. We ended up selling the car though about 1 1/2 years ago

Hey brother PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what you've done since this video I just came across it I've been building Hondas for the last two decades have a built 95 Civic coupe with an all motor d-series pushing 200 hp at the wheels...... I've built plenty of k-series b series h-series and j series also have a fully built all motor full bolt on V6 6 speed manual Accord coupe with the hfp Honda factory performance package making 320 HP at the wheels BUT LET ME SAY THIS........ My mom has a 2012 Honda Civic EX-L sedan r18 and I did a custom short ram intake that's a k&n intake with the heat shield but I took off the stock air duct that goes down under the battery and comes up behind the headlight and made a custom air duct that goes down to the front bumper where the fog light would sit that alone dropped her intake air temperatures down from 140° down to 70 or 80 degrees on a hot day and you can actually hear and feel her VTEC crossover now!!!! Then we did the OBX header with the flex pipe and then we did the Megan racing down pipe and a yanaka Cat-Back exhaust Car made 136 then we did HONDATA....... BUT YOU HAVE TO GET IT TUNED TO YOUR CAR SPECIFIC MODS OR YOU WILL NOT PERIOD!!!!!! The base maps don't do s*** once we got that thing tuned we were making quite a bit more power and we also added the weapon r intake manifold and were able to put down a healthy 150 at the wheels which is damn good out of an r18 just like when people doubted that I could build a fast all motor d-series Civic I did and I was beating friends with b series and bolt on k series all day long and surprising people left and right 😂😂😂 The point is do what you want build what you want f*** the haters!!!! And have fun with it My mom is plenty happy with it and she could have bought the SI but she really liked that the EXL came with heated seats and leather seats and besides it's literally identical to an SI sedan because we put in the SI grill SI spoiler si wheels SI bumpers and the JDM blue Honda badges on the front back steering wheel blue seats blue floor mats blue gauges blue lignuts!! And she used to have a 99 Civic SI back when it was brand spanking new that she used to take me to the street races in before I got my license back in 06 that was a full bolt on b16 build then she had two different Subaru wrx's before she went back to Honda and bought this 2012 Civic brand new but I will say the number one mod that I think seriously made a difference was we did not want to run a cold air intake because how much it rains here during the winter in Seattle so we wanted to get a short ram intake but we didn't want to run a short ram intake and get lots of heat so I can lose power so by building that heat shield wrapping the intake tube and that gold reflective heat tape and then building that custom air duct they went from the heat shield down to the front bumper seriously dropped her intake air temperatures and help that car breathe so much that model and I think did more than everything besides the tune and Hondata itself!!

If you go to the channel I have made lots more videos on this car, and then an explanation of what happened. We did every, all motor mod, and actual tune, but still made less than factory power. I do believe the issue was the tuner we went with. But we have since moved on to a Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

@@ipp2109I guarantee it was the tuner bro because I live here in Seattle and we have speed factory who holds the world record for fastest front-wheel drive Honda in the world what year ralliart have you moved on to????? Because I've built nothing but 30 Hondas and Acura is over the years and I needed to pick up a new daily driver after my 04 Honda Accord V6 coupe got t-boned back in May so I decided to pick up something that I've always wanted to try building and I picked up a 2004 Mitsubishi lancer ralliart 5 speed with the 4G69 and so far I have done cold air intake 4-1 header that eliminates the cat and then a custom 2.5 inch Cat-Back exhaust and a ported and polished intake manifold and a bigger 3.8 l eclipse throttle body I am planning to get it tuned but it is very hard to find somebody to tune this gen of ralliart closest person I can find is in California who can do a remote tune

@seattlejdmcivic Upgraded to a 2010 Ralliart. It's got the 4B11T(from evo) just smaller turbo and detuned, and the SST twin clutch transmission with AWD. All we've done so far is, intake, exhaust Evo X turbo swap, and tune. Haven't been to the dyno yet, should be around 300whp. But it definitely moves, and the twin clutch is pretty fun to drive honestly, even though it's auto

Does the throttle feel any different? These R18's have DBW throttles and they can add a bit of lag under acceleration.. Does it feel any more responsive?

It was hard to tell honestly. If it did improve it, it wasn't much. Although I have a video on putting in a J35 throttle body. And that did make it more responsive

Yeah you only get 50% throttle position until you reach 35% of the max throttle position.. so like push the pedal down only 30% and it's actually only doing 15% but say u push pedal 36% then you would get 36% throttle. So yeah half throttle until over 35% throttle position is commanded.

Its the ex trim. The noise isn't vtec its actually the crossover sound. From the variable intake runner

my 8th gen makes 140 rn with a cold air and an exhaust but the r18 wouldn't be able to make too much power being an economy based engine with the i-vtec

Yeah the i-vtec isn't used for power like the traditional ones. I think a good tuner could've made a difference in power though

The 1st dyno sheet graph looks wrong. It spikes up at the end which is not normal. I think your 1st dyno should of been 115 whp. And where is the torque graph? You should of had the before and after graph on the same printout to see where you lost and gain power. I did a quick photoshop of the 2 graphs and it looks like the hondata made power lower in the powerband. Did the car seem faster after installing the hondata?

I guess that's true, I didn't think about that spike. The torque isnt there because it was just a Dyno days event and they were only testing horsepower. It would be a good idea to graph those over each other and see the difference in the power band. Didn't feel any different after installing it though.

We had a local tuner work on it, but it made no difference in power, we ended up selling it and moving on to an evo.

They are rated at 140hp to the crank. Due drive train loss, they only put down about 120hp to the wheels

The intellience vtec is only fuel economy on the r18, there isnt performance vtec.

Hey, louis from canada. Well I own a 09 r18 after having a focus st and a chrysler 200s 2015.. well this garbage is slow so why not tuning it now that my credit score is trash for 7 years! I'm about to buy a ktuner 1.2 used and get it unlocked with the ECU on which it was locked on. Wondering if I should abord the operation or go full throttle..

I don't have experience with the ktuner, so im not to sure. I'd say as long as you can find someone you know can tune a Honda well, then do it.

@@ipp2109 Yeah i see, youve only tuned with hondata. I saw some of your other videos and you mentionned thatall your mods didnt add up Hp at all, cam shaft, header, J35 and hondata. Maybe its the tuner's fault cuz on ktuner 1.2, there's like 8 or 9 maps available for the r18 depending on injectors size, p flow and etc. My friends in Quebec are doing some experiences on their k20 2006 si and they'll try to tune my r18 after I install my headers, 410cc injectors and downpipe. I'll let you know and maybe I should start doing videos to show my mods to the community

@@LouisFrederickGagnon believe me man. I hate to say this I've owned an R18, save the money for some quality/respectable cosmetic mods. Theres no making a R18 fast, maybe a turbo but even then youll be keeping up with tuned K20s. Hate to break it to you, but trust me save your money. R18s are made purely for economy. I've been there and done it and regretted it.

They were 17x7.5 rims and a 225/45R17 tire. With a 20mm spacer

Looking at getting hondata and a tune I’m fully stock but drop in K&N Filter. Do you think it’s worth it for the price? Just want a little more fun out of my car.

If your completely stock a tune won't do much. You'll want at least an intake and exhaust with a tune to get a little more pep. It's not really with it though, for the price of all that plus hondata and tune, and you'll maybe get 20hp

Yes, it was a full cat back exhaust. Was actually for a coupe model so we had a shop adjust it to fit

Hey if you don't want that Hondata anymore I'll gladly buy it for half price of course 😉 ..... I think you need to learn how to use hondata before you post videos like this because the base map does nothing just enough to get the engine to run you have to tune it yourself or use the auto-tune feature

Go to a different tuner. On your 2nd visit the guy didn't even try hard or at least it didn't seem like it.

A different tuner would have definitely helped. There was a really good honda tuner about 5 hours away, but they never picked up the phone so I could set up an appointment. About a year ago we ended up selling the car and got an evo

At the time of this video is was just a generic cold air intake from ebay. We later got a short ram intake from weapon R

Plenty of people have made power with just an intake, exhaust, and tune. If you watch my later videos I did almost every bolt on mod for the R18 and did dyno runs

I just replaced my intake with a takeda, i was gonna buy the takeda cat back but heard the flomaster flow fx so i got that one instead, if done right how much hondata will yield on horsepower on my 1.8 engine 9th gen civic ex? Has anybody tried it? There’s not much video in utube, i’m also just getting into this things. Thanks.

If you find a good tuner they can probably get you to 135-140whp, about 20 over stock. If I remember correctly ktuner is better for the 9th generation r18, and hondata is better for 8th

@@ipp2109 thanks man, i’ll take note on that one. Ktuner then. And i believe it’s less expensive too, i wasn’t plankig to upgrade at first, but ever since i replace the shocks, cos the old one is worn out, i decided to replace it with coilovers, it low just about before it atarts to hit anything, but the difference in handling tho, that got me started into upgrading, but I don’t know much about it, thanks for the tip man.

Unless its an Si, Type R, or base LX model then yes its an auto haha. Honda doesnt sell the manual with the mid models for some reason, Im not even sure you can order them either. The CVT is faster than the 5 speed manual anyway, if the CVT was out for this year. I think they started putting them in in 2014.

This thing is a fucking bowl of rice in the making. Get that ebay mugen wannabe spoiler off and removed those redicilous looking fender flares. Dont get me started on the vinyls or your derpy'ness...last i knew injen was not "some generic intake" not to mention 1.8L also carries vtec
