Interesting! The first time I tested clubs after 20 years away from golf I could immediately feel the difference with Mizuno irons and I had no idea what their tag line was. I was fitted into the Forged and went to the 221 the following season. Love the feel. I couldn't disagree more that golf is just a number in a box. I love both the look and feel of their irons and that gives me pleasure every time I swing them. And I play well with them as well even though they're supposed to be for a better golfer than I.

I switch clubs constantly I go from anything anything from a players distance iron into a blade!!currently playing mizuno 221s in my opinion there's not a huge difference in forgiveness in most club categories a poor golf swing is going to result in a very similar result no matter what golf club you hit it with!!with that being said play what looks and feels the best to you

I love when Lewis part of Andy’s videos due to unabashed honesty. Too many YT channels focused on equipment are concerned with alienating the OEMs and as a result, everything is great. As good a player as Lewis is, he’s not afraid to say “Do I have to hit them?” He has more talent and feel than I’ll ever have (I’m an average golfer), but he wants to make the game easier too!

Your comment is spot on! I carry the JPX900s (bought a few years ago) for one reason.. feel. But those are not as soft feeling of my other Mizunos (MX-20s). I might switch this year to Ping i230s. Not sure if the feel will be as good? I agree when other youtubers will not say anything bad when they are getting paid by them (ie goodgood or Grant and Micah).

I’m a mid handicapper and actually fit into the tour. They aren’t that hard to hit. The only issue I had was distance but I would club up. The lofts are weaker than use to. But they SHOCKED me and I’m a 14 handicap. They were very easy to hit!

What controversy? I hit the hotmetal , the corresponding Titleist, Callaway, Taylor Made, and the Ping in the "player improvement' range. The Mizuno where by far the best feeling, best sounding, and I was able to hit them higher and farther. I don't buy hype, I buy what works, but they are gorgeous. If I was a scratch golfer I would probably go with Titleist, but then this channel IS called "The Average Golfer'... so, what's your point here?

I play the 923 Tours and tested them side by side with the forged when I was fit and just hit them better, and could shape shots better. I came from playing blades and like that the heads are no visually different than blades, with a tiny bit of forgiveness. I just feel more confident looking down at a thin topline. I actually cant hit game improvement irons worth a crap because the size just gets in my head. It's just funny that everyone gets scared looking down at a blade and I feel completely the opposite. If you want to really get a thrill, grab the Cobra MB 4 iron, its about half an inch shorter than the mizuno :)

I started golfing in the early 70’s with a set of 1960’s vintage Spaulding blades 2 - PW. The driver and 3 wood were real woods. Looking back now, I realize just how atrociously difficult those clubs were to play. I do have to say, there is no better feeling than to hit a forged iron, and Mizuno in my opinion is tops in that category.

I have gamed irons from every major brand except Callaway. Got the Mizuno Pro 223's a couple months back and the Mizuno feel is just different. I was fitted for and hit everything imaginable, including forged offerings of all that had them. My previous irons were the first gen Titleist T200's. Whether one iron is better for you than another is debatable, especially if you're shopping in the same category of club. So all things being equal, I pick the iron that makes me want to practice more and helps me enjoy the game more. I'm absolutely loving the 223's even if my scoring and ball striking isn't appreciably better after a couple months than it was with the T200's.

Thanks for the video. I have tried the 923 Tour against the Titleist T100 multiple times and with many different shafts to try and get it right. Ultimately, I love the look of the T100 better however, the 923 Tour was softer by a good amount. When using the same shaft (Modus 120 S) I had results that were so close you wouldn't be able to tell one apart from the other. I am still to make a decision on what to go with, but can vouch for anyone looking at the 923 Tours that they are very soft on the feel and more forgiving than you'd think.

@@Economical_Overeem to be quite honest, they were very similar, I don't think either was more forgiving than the other. On the Titleist you'll feel the off-center hits more. Pure forgings have somewhat limited capabilities distance wise for average swing speeds. Clubs like the P770, PXG irons or even the Mizuno Forged are offering more speed with a slightly less “true forged feel”. In the JPX Forged iron the 8 to Gap offering are made from 1025e carbon steel, so softer. Still a cavity back, but soft. I think Mizuno found something this year with the JPX line because the entire line up has better feel then the prior generation. As far as the comment about Mizuno feel being hype. Nope, it’s not hype. The cooper underlay in the blade or in the tour model combined with the “GF Forging” process is what “all” other irons are trying to achieve. Even other Mizuno irons that offer more ball speed using different metals or iron build are trying to achieve that. It’s about compromise unless you’re an elite golfer. Personally, I think the Forged is an outstanding iron.

I agree with Lewis. Just bought new irons. Was very excited by all the hype to try Mizuno. I tried multiple models and couldn't tell the difference between them and everything else. If I was striking the ball really well then every club hit the sweet spot and felt fantastic. If I was hitting the ball thin, or on the toe or heel then everything jangled up the handle. After multiple rounds of testing (to make sure I didn't have a fluke day) I ended up buying something else because the dispersion circles were better for me.

Felt like they did a disservice to Mizuno in this review. They failed to mention or were unaware there’s a difference in the 4-7 (chromoly forged) vs. 8-GW (pured carbon steel forged). Basically just compared the 4 and 7 iron forged vs. tour review, and gave their opinions as representation of the entire set. Assuming these were media or fitting samples (only provided 4 and 7 iron), but should state so before making statements such as ‘forged is harder to me’.

I think the quality of the metal is what matters. And I think alot of the Forged irons depending on metals used are all feeling soft and "buttery" I Also feel that Cavity backs and 3 peice irons feel more "dull" and non responsive. Of course that is my thought and feelings. And may be different from other players out there. Great video though! Really honest and truthful. Love it!

It's all in your head Andy! Being traditional lofted they won't go as far as a 29 degree 7 iron with a springy face but modern bladed clubs are much more forgiving than they used to be. If you're happy taking an extra club then modern blades are definitely an option for the low -mid- handicap player. I urge you to have a look at Jay smith's channel, ask golf nut where he does a comparison of the 221 pro and 223 forged and shows how forgiving they are. 10m low, 10m toe strikes are not unduly punished. I think we have been brainwashed to believe that we need game improvement irons if we are above a 10 handicap. You have to be objective about it and hit loads of shots on a simulator to find out if they really work for you. A subjective "these are not for me" won't cut it!

The mindset of “who wants to make the game harder than it already is” is absolutely why so many people do not get better. They want tech, clubs, balls, fill in the blank make up for lack of skill. You play something like a 221 or jpx tour for consistency. If you can’t hit them SWING BETTER. A forgiving club is a crutch for a bad golf swing. Modern blades and cavity backs are plenty forgiving. I’d much rather play something consistent than something that may go 10 yards further than normal with a good swing.

You both hit the tour better. And I had AP1’s. Recently switched to JPX923’s and my game changed enough to break 80 constantly now. Making better shot dispersion on all my irons😉. This was the first time I went into my fitting not letting my EGO get involved for the first time EVER 😂. And let the numbers make my decision. I feel that’s A LOT of golfers problems when choosing the right set of clubs for their game. I HIGHLY recommend trying this. Look both of them said they didn’t even want to a swing it. But both of them hit the one they didn’t like just by ego and looks🤦🏻‍♂️

I strongly disagree with almost everything Lewis said. I got down to 12 hcp playing MP32s, off the shelf with DG S300 shafts in them. Then I drank the kool-aid of golf pros and club fitters who spread the myths like he does (thank God, that has changed in the past five years or so) and switched to Ping G-series irons, custom fitted with lighter, high launching shafts, and my hcp rose to 18 within two years, because my swing went south quickly, and I had no consistency in terms of length . It is astonishing, how some people talk about blades, like they could get killed by them. They are not swords or daggers pointed at your heart, they are only golf clubs, and as long as your livelyhood doesn't depend on earning money in tournaments, what does it matter? For me personally, I think that I play better with smaller iron heads, because you won't miss the ball completely once you have reached a certain level, and "anywhere on the face" is inevitably very close to the sweet spot with very small iron heads. The only thing Lewis is right about is the fact that "Nothing feels like a Mizuno" isn't 100% correct. Forged Wilson Staff blades (which brought me back close to my best golf again after the GI experiment) and forged Srixon irons feel just as good as Mizuno irons.

just my 2 cents, I am currently playing with TM P7TW blades and also have srixon z forged blade. I put the same shaft in both and they feel exactly the same. the feel out of an iron depends more on your swing. i have two diff swings where one makes the impact feel super light (like hitting a ping pong ball with a paddle) vs. one that feels heavy like the ball is getting compressed more (feels more like hitting a tennis ball with a racquet). strangely they both yield the same distance. my point is, you can get diff feels from a blade even when hitting the sweet spot based on what swing you put on it. the thing I like about blades is it exposes your swing flaws. And it's like a swing trainer while playing golf. sure its much harder to hit but after 20 years, I finally "got it" and now I get those quarter size wear marks on my club faces. I never took golf lessons whereas my buddy's only been playing for 2 years and he has as good of a swing as me. he spent about 5k dollars on golf lessons and we analyze pro's swing and try to figure out the "secret move" and we finally got it. The point is, getting proper lesson from a good local pro (not some quack), is the key to really saving money and enjoying this game for a long time. I wish I had learned how to swing the club properly sooner. it wouldve saved my back from so much pain and damage all these years.

Then bought Mizuno JPX 919's. OK but didn't "feel" right. And the long irons had a wheezing sound in the swish, like a horse with breathing problems. Think it's from the little vanes in the cavity. Back to the Speedblades, ahhhh! That's it! With me it how the clubs felt during the swings. Not necessarily sound, impact and all that. When people refer to Mizuno feel, they're talking abut their one piece Grain flow forged irons. The JPX 923 Forged are not in that category as they are multi material, multi piece irons. The JPX 923 Tour doesn't have boron and is the classic 1025e with a copper underlay which is more traditonal but still not the MP series. With all that being said, and as much as I love Mizuno's feel, I've hit other irons which feel every bit as good. This includes WIlson Staff model forgings which use the according to some, uses inferior 8620 carbon construction. Bottom line is that sound=feel. Get the sound right with any material and the club will feel great.

But I also tried a while back the 919 Tours, absolutely wonderful feeling, one of the best I have ever tried, I could easily have played the 7i maybe even 6i to PW in that set but the 5i scared me with how small it was. I play i210s which are cast clubs, but they still feel nice when I catch it out of the middle and have a a surprising amount of forgiveness. If I win the lottery the 223s would be high up the list to replace the i210s

I guess the forged is competing now with the Hot metal pro. The hot metal pro is similar in shape but more players distance design. Hard to figure where the Forged sits if you are not getting the feel element.

I've not got a ton of different clubs like you guys have but any club out the middle feels great. The rest of it is in our heads and preconceptions. I can't look at lots of offset, it just looks weird but I can't look at a tiny blade with no offset either. I only play short irons but if I was changing anytime soon I'd be looking at zx5's or maybe the 223 forged, I think.

I agree that their is hype on Mizuno feel. I've hit different forgings out the middle and softer cast irons. Can't feel a big difference. However, I think the psychology of clubheads discussed here is overemphasized. The tours are not horribly unforgiving anyway. These days, pick something you like the look of and suits your game. Don't worry too much about "inspiring confidence." Having a hybrid, a long player's iron, or a long forgiving iron won't make you more confident hitting a 200 yard shot over water.

I have to disagree on the confidence factor, if a 20 HCp golfer has the option of a 3 iron or 3 hybrid in almost every instance they will have more confidence in the hybrid

I think if you like forged clubs, the Mizuno and Ben Hogans are different in feel. The Srixon are good too. I think a lot of players will play clubs for distance or forgiviness etc... Those who are looking for that small difference in feel these clubs offer that.

Andy, what irons does your guest play. Has he tried Takomo irons. If it doesn't really matter then why spend a thousand more pounds if it doesn't matter. I agree with him. I hit a Wilson D9 7 iron and then a Taylormade P790 7 iron. I hit the Wilson just a bit further but the numbers were very close. So if feel and looks isn't a real big issue then I save myself 800.00 by going with the Wilson

My experience from a fitting a few years back: the 921 forged didn’t feel good in my opinion. Bad actually. The 921 tours, I loved them and play them now. BUT! They do not feel better than my previous irons: ‘98s Taylormade Burner LCG irons. They felt and performed exactly the same. I just upgraded because I wanted to after a few decades. Hitting the middle of a club will make anything sound/feel good. Fan that they’ve got the copper layer now, but that’s cancelled out by them making the tours smaller.

I really don't understand how people gain or lose confidence over the ball when looking at the top line of irons. I would much rather have a small top line. The fact game improvement irons are thicker/bigger is one of the reason i don't like hitting them. I miss the feel of my mizuno blades, mp-33's are just so buttery soft. I tried moving to game improvement irons and kept going back to the blades. I never hit them any better, and it seemed like played worse most the time. I'm currently playing 620cb's because the heads look much closer to the blade profile, but they don't have the feel the mizuno blades had.

Mine is more a sole thing. If it has a thick sole I just don't have confidence I can go down after it while still getting out of the ground with a clean strike. It's 100% in my head but darn if it doesn't bleed into my results.
@tolkas42
@tolkas42 Жыл бұрын
@@jacobmccain8082 it could be this for me as well. Since i play on cheaper courses most of the time and the ground is much harder than an expensive course. The wider soles seem to be much more inclined to bounce or just stick in the ground more, instead of taking a clean divot like a players iron would.
@tolkas42
@tolkas42 Жыл бұрын
@@TheAverageGolfer It seem like it is a bit of a marketing ploy as well. I cant remember anyone ever talking about confidence and top line until game improvement irons became more of a thing and thicker top lines being one of the distinctions of game improvement irons.

Recently moved away from Mizuno 919 forged to TM P770's loved mizuno feel and look but the new 923 forged have gone stronger lofted compared to 919s. ( I not sure why manufactures are making alot of these players clubs strong lofted as I have my yardages for each iron and when i look at changing i want something that has the same loft) The P770 are a lovely looking iron, slightly weaker lofted than my 919s but i didnt loose any distance that i can see so far but only have them a month Im sure my shotscope stats wont be that different

I own & play the 919 Hot Metal Pro, bent mostly 2 degrees weaker & I've said this now for 3 yrs, I don't understand the Forged model - I think they should get rid of it because the Hot Metal Pro, especially the new 923 version, sounds just as good and is more forgiving. The new Tour version is no doubt a real Mizuno sounding & feeling club & honestly is a better club than the 221 Pro Blade. For me, Mizuno's best clubs are the Pro 225, 923 Tour & 923 Hot Metal Pro

I have the 919 HMP too. Interesting that you have bent them weaker, as that would increase the bounce do you think the turf interaction is improved?
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Жыл бұрын
@@geraldhemming I can give a really long-winded answer to this but this was a slow and progressive journey, after taking 15+ years off the game with injury, coming back to new technology and new balls that fly way further than wound balata balls, and then starting with TXG in Toronto to bend them weaker to hit certain carries (I live around the corner from them), but then with more information I learned with my ice-hockey slapshot background, I'm a VERY forward handle deliverer of the club, so without knowing this when I bent them initially, actually bending them much weaker actually helped my through turf delivery. My specs are (48,42,37,32, 28, 24) - so the 5-iron at 24 I think is the same but the 48-degree PW is 3-degrees weaker - the 32-degree 7-iron is 2 degrees weaker (I ultimately replaced my 6&5 with 919 HMB 6&5 at same loft as I like the thinner soles and not seeing the back of the clubs) - but my 32-degree 7-iron, which I stock carry 173-yards, I LOVE. With my comeback to the game, and more modern toe-down to toe-down delivery with stronger face control and less club rotation through impact - I think addind 2-degrees (30 to 32 degrees 7-iron) is PERFECT - spin is in an excellent window and turf interaction is excellent for MY delivery - all of this was done at TXG and they liked the numbers for ME. No two golfers are similar but it worked for me.
