A film by Les Blair - a brilliant film, a deadly accurate portrayal of life in a London advertising agency during the early 80s. With Derrick O'Connor, Richard E Grant, Adrian Edmondson, Juliette Mole, and Gary Oldman. A made for TV film and the first film appearance for Richard E Grant.
The launch of Chaser Lager could be big for KFS if Alun shows some commitment; if Mike's lifestyle doesn't catch up with him; if the rest of the team concern themselves more with the product's image and less with their own - they might just have a winner on their hands.
Les Blair used his own experience to create this look at Britain's advertising industry. 'In the 1960s,' says Blair, 'I had a stint as a copywriter in a small-time Birmingham agency. Our slumbers were disturbed one day when an account executive wheeled in an aquamarine bicycle and asked us to come up with a name for the color. It struck me that we were all grown men, so I suggested 'blue' and sealed my fate as far as advertising was concerned. I had broken the prime rule-you may think it's silly business but don't say so."
Blair used his theatre and television background as a director of both scripted work and actors' improvisational workshops in developing characters and story ideas for the film. 'The advertising industry takes itself seriously enough without encouragement from me,' said Blair. 'More interesting was the fun to be had with a bunch of characters in a job that pays well and is better than working.'

One of my favourite TV films from the 80s. A real treasure. Isn't Mr Fletcher wonderful? And what he says about lager being driven by advertising is spot on. Perfectly captures the mood of advertising agencies in the 1980s.

I was very happy to find this on here after reading Adrian Edmondson's book Berserker. To be honest I think that it's interesting rather than great (Gary Oldman's bits could have been taken out altogether for example), but I love how a pre-Withnail Richard E Grant steals every scene he is in! Thanks for uploading.

Screen Two did some wonderful work like this. Like to see BBC or even BFI release Blu Ray box sets of these films. Nice to see Ade Edmondson in more drama work (mostly known for comedy classics like Bottom and Young Ones), and him and Gary Oldman (as always excellent especially during his 80's pomp) have great chemistry in this one and would have been happy just to see the film based on them. I think scenes between them are highlight of this one off drama. Richard E. Grant is very good as awfully pretentious character. Well worth checking out.

I love this movie, haven't seen it in so many years 💖. I almost forgot Gary Oldman was in it - and Richard E. Grant. As if you could forget a naked flute player 😳🤣 I remember how Ade's energy in this was so different to most of his other characters, who were all outrageous comedy types. Alan was more laid-back and cool, closer to himself and his own everyday humor, and really very attractive.

Great production. Shows how some ad agencies worked and worked by bullshitting their clients. I went to the supposedly best ad school in the US at that time, Northwestern University. That gives me a context for this tele-play. The strategic plan for promoting Chaser beer was, I think, a good one and on the mark. And the salesy account exec did a fine job of it. The client's initial reaction, damning it with a faint praise and underscoring what was important to him, was also valid. The first commercial story boards were wildly off the mark, hilariously stupid and then the ad that was filmed was also a thunker that did not promote the beer as a valid alternative to a sophisticated wine or cocktail. Terrible ads but that's a great part of the story. And, again, so many unsympathetic characters. Thanks for the upload.

Judging by the shape of the spectacle frames worn by the Richard E. Grant character, he watches way too much television.

This is a bit spooky. One of the world's best actors Oldman, alongside one of my comedy heroes, Ade Edmonson, who's always been ahead of the the game and brilliant especially in 'The Comic Strip Presents...', and all his other stuff ... together. Ade is naturalistic and excellent. Who gets the screen breaks? It doesn't matter. Ade is as brilliant as writer/actor in 'Bad News' as Vim Feuago / Alan -lead guitarist - (six months before "Spinal Tap" took the piss out of Heavy Metal in the UK cinemas, before 1983). Ade is superb as Eddie in Bottom, or Sir Adrian Dangerous in The Dangerous Brothers, as Oldman is as Sid Vicious (Sid & Nancy) or Beethoven or Oswald (JFK). The same drama that a year ahead of Fatty Grant appearing in Withnail as ... well you know. Withnail & I is a masterpiece ... as much as 'Mr Jolly Lives Next Door' is ... featuring Rik/Ade in that dark comic masterpiece (director Stephen Frears). TV is film, film is TV. TV is cinema. Talent is talent. God I love British actors! xx

My favorite part of this wonderful film is when the Sloane Ranger secretary dumps a simply enormous boatload of sugar into Derek O'Connor's tea (for Americans, that's a sure sign of a toff's contempt for the lower classes)! And there are the young and beautiful Adrian Edmundson and Gary Oldman, and all the others--who seem to sit around sulking in such an 80's way.....
