@@jumbowana that doesnt solve ANYTHING. having 0% of the decisional power is indistinguishable from having less than 2% of the decisional power. yes. we are about 3 million. given your anachronistic electoral college practice we would have less then 2% of the total electoral college vote. we would have 2 out of 102 senators, again less than 2% and we would have 6-8 out of over 450 representatives in your house of representatives. which is again, less than 2%. we would still be subject to YOUR laws, and even if we oppose them in your senate and house of representatives, you would vote your own interests over ours and we'd still be crushed. we need to be set free. but that's quite difficult with over 100 years of imperialist propaganda. if you start a movement to set puerto rico free i would donate money to it. that's the only way we have to progress. to be free from usa federal laws.

@@jumbowana i'll give you just one example, and you can look up everything else, because it's a plethora. we are FORCED by usa federal law to use the most ridiculously overpriced merchant ships in the world. that makes EVERYTHING here more expensive than it should be, because as you know in any capitalist regime the one who pays for everything is ultimately the consumer. that's just one example. there are countless. but you can imagine what a devastating impact just that one thing has, that every single thing we import is significantly more expensive than it should be. and those profits go to usa, they dont even stay here. if we were a state, our 2% of the votes in your senate and 2% in your house of representatives would be immediately overwhelmed by your 98% of the votes in each chamber. so it would effectively be 0%, with additional steps. you are aware of the supremacy clause of your constitution, right? any federal laws go over any local laws.

Over 55% of the population constantly vote to stay in the USA, some want to be a state, and a very small minority of the country want indepednce. Honestly, it costs US tax payers a lot of money to constantly aid Puerto Rico and the country hasn't been doing the best with US rule either, Puerto Rico should just be forced into independence similar to how Malaysia kicked Singapore out and made them a country.

More so it doesn’t paint a picture of PR’s local government at all. This isn’t simply the true side of things... they are cherry picked to help support an agenda. Not the whole truth at all. Love the Jone Acts. I still remember like 10 years ago , we asked permission to the USA to buy Gasoline from Venezuela because was cheaper than buying from USA and our petition got denied . The Jone act Law should be abolished, how come we can only buy everything from the USA and can not buy from other countries ???? Also when the hurricane Maria a lot of food came from other countries in big cargo ships and they have to wait on the ocean for two weeks to be able to obtain permission from USA to get into the Puerto Rico waters. A lot of the food that they brought got spoiled . How come it took two weeks for USA approve those cargo ships provide their help to Puertorricans? We do pay taxes as any good USA citizendoes . In our case about 70% percent of our paid taxes is kept buy the USA government and we get 30% back to run the island. In Puerto Rico USA stores manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies they don't have to pay taxes to the government because they are providing work opportunities to the Puertorricans . Hahaha! Minimum wage was recently increase $8.50 p/hr despite that it was suggested buy USA fiscal group to be reduce to $4.75 per hour. Now on 2021 in Puerto Rico a gallon of milk cost $6.50 Puertorricans have to work almost an hour to be able to buy a Gallon of milk for their families. Is not just the milk that cost more expensive in the island, is evey single food item, clothes, cars , etc. Puertorricans pay more than of that they will at For all these reason they're more Puertorricans living in the USA and other countries than inside the island.

I am from Puerto Rico and I can guarantee this is 100% true!! To add: they also attempted to eliminate Spanish and replace it with English (it failed, but then succeeded enough to become our official second language), made beautiful tourism areas too expensive for most locals but so big that it is usually the only thing foreigners-on-vacation get to see, and they almost privatized the beaches; they are currently technically public but difficult to access. They also ruined all chances of alliances/relationships with Cuba.

Hola amigos. After the Visit Hawai' i video, SO many Boricuas asked us to make one about the current situation in Puerto Rico; I've never received so many requests for a video - so we just had to do it! I was fortunate to be able to chat and consult with a dozen of them over the past month, men and women of various ages... and whilst they had different views on statehood vs independence, they all agreed on one thing: that Puerto Rico is a US colony. That's why I decided to focus on this (rather than weigh in on the subject of political status, which is for Boricuas to decide) Thanks to all who took time to share their passion and teach me about their beautiful island (which I really hope to visit in person one day), and who gave me feedback on drafts of the video. Any errors and omissions are of course my own. In fact, there are lots of omissions; there's just only so much I could fit in to 2 minutes. But I hope you enjoy.

Hmm, that puts a lot of US territorial claims into question. I have to admit I don't know much about the US Virgin Islands. Still, I reckon y'all have had it easier than WWII acquisitions like the Marshall Islands. Nothing like being the site of the Castle Bravo nuclear weapons mishap. It was only four years ago the Marshallese government started allowing divers to return to Bikini island. The Castle series of nuclear weapons tests were also the inspiration for Sponge Bob.

As someone who lives in the states, it is so sad that this was never brought up in school. I was never taught anything about Puerto Rico and the current situation that they are in. I want Puerto Rico to be treated with respect and dignity because that's what they deserve. I hope to see more discussion on this sometime. And I am also sad that I am only seeing this now because I could have become more educated of different areas in the world that are not as privileged as me. And I am ashamed that I didn't know about this before and still don't know much. I will bring this topic up in a situation where I know it will help and try to educate others on the political climate surrounding this issue. Because I know if people know about this issue and how much it affects the people living there and how much it affects the people in the states, I am sure that it will become something that is not taboo. I am sad that people only care when it affects them, but that is how it is. And if we show people that this is something that affects them and the surrounding people, maybe they will listen. And then, we can help others in need. Also, I don't know why I wrote an essay on this in the comment section but, I am an ambitious person, so I hope that someone sees this comment, and it changes their view on this before undiscussed topic. Or, it could have been right in front of my face this time, but at least I know now. So, good luck Puerto Rico. And again sorry for this super long comment no one asked for.

We dont play fair and dont fight fair and we don't. Do not treat us citizens fairly either. I always felt bad for her also bc she didnt seem to realize the harm of the US having control over there. Here in the US we have mo culture really bc we are a meltingpot. So when we take over these places we just westernize them and these people lose who they are, their culture. We strip them of all of that, it is why Hawaiians do not like american touristd or just America in general.

@ManScoutsofAmerica I agree in that they chose to not be a state but that does not mean we should not try and revitalize and diversify their economy from tourism. They’re Americans too, and we should always strive to defend and support our fellow Americans. We need to get them off Federal welfare - it will benefit the contiguous United States and Puerto Rico. I’m usually a proponent of the government staying out of citizen’s affairs, or expanding its reach. But I think some investment incentives for local business would do good.

Except Puerto Ricans do have their own Constitution: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Puerto_Rico, can apply for statehood whenever they want, do vote for their own local government, the U.S isn't forcing any kind of political change on Puerto Rico, they still have their own free elections, they enjoy the same freedom of speech any other American has, the few rights they don't enjoy could be easily remedied by applying for statehood, which they don't do because many of them don't have to pay federal income taxes, really there's no comparison here. Communist China is a one party dictatorship, it's a Communist nation, which in and of itself makes it tyrannical, and Hong Kong is slowly seeing all its independent local government being stripped by Beijing, One is a brutal Commie dictatorship, the other is a Republic with some of the strictest limitations on the power of government in the world.

PR is exempt from basically all Federal Taxes. The US even when we ARE colonizers are so self-conciously guilt-ridden about it that we justify it by not taking local money and waiting to see if they vote on independence (See "Any country we have a compact of free association with"), with the only notable exceptions being a few more that either already have independence (Phillipines) or went for Statehood so no backsies (Hawaii). PR used to enjoy their commonwealth status until recently it suddenly became in their best interests to be a State and y'know what, I hope they get that 51st star.

Alejandro Carrillo It would be nice if all the territories united to confront the United States of America, sit to drink a Puerto Rican coffee and say FUCK IT U.S.A let's make a deal... a smart deal! What are in the disposition to give us? But that's needs to be coordinated very well between the citizens and part of the government. which is doubtful to happen.

@@DurzoBlunts excuse me, the Jones Act is a hidden federal sales tax. The Jones Act as a hidden federal tax makes everything Puerto Ricans buy from 20 to 30 percent more expensive. BTW, Puerto Rico pay way more federal taxes than any state. So, we have taxation without representation. FYI
