This was SHINee's first comeback after Jonghyun's tragedy. The lyrics express them looking forward to meeting him again, while the MV is completely filled with Jonghyun-related symbolisms - from the fox representation to My Little Prince (director?) projection - his fav story. It's a very heavy video for such a light-sounding song. As for the next SHINee recommendation, I strongly suggest View!

To understand SHINee's "Good Evening" MV what you need to know is that it had only been about 5 months when this MV came out since Jonghyun died, and this song and MV is all about how SHINee and Shawols have been grieving and are finally ready to begin to heal and come out of the darkness into the light. The album is called The Story of Light and it's all about finding the light out of the darkness, etc. It's about how the members are learning to continue on without Jonghyun and find happiness and light in a situation that will forever be difficult. As you probably know, May 25, 2018, when this MV was released, was SHINee's 10th anniversary so this was also important because it was a comeback to commemorate their 10 years as a group. The choreography for "Good Evening" is very deliberate. The reason the choreography is like that is because it depicts them going through the grieving process and it tells the story of all the emotions they went through and how, now at the end, they have made the choice to continue on as a group and keep on running, etc. The choreography is really complex and beautiful and really fits the song well. It becomes clearer once you see it in its entirety and start to understand the story behind it all. You really should check out SHINee's dance practice video for "Good Evening" to see the full choreography. (If you haven't already, you should also check out SHINee's rollercoaster version of the choreography that they performed on Weekly Idol.) Fun fact: the choreographer for this song was Koharu Sugawara, who was featured in Taemin's "Move" MV, as well as choreographed several of Taemin's other songs, and also collaborated with several other choreographers on Taemin's "Criminal" MV. As you may remember, she is a famous Japanese choreographer who has known Taemin for years, so it was really special she was able to work on this project because she got to be a part of SHINee's healing process. In the MV, not only is the extra shadow that appears when they look into the tunnel/well at the end speculated to be Jonghyun's shadow, but the fox is thought to also represent him. Onew intensely stares into the eyes of the fox, almost as if he is communicating with the fox through his thoughts, and, to me, it's as if he is sharing a moment with Jonghyun. There is a fox in the story "The Little Prince" and "The Little Prince" was one of Jonghyun's favorite stories. Plus, a fox often represents the afterlife and the spirit of someone who has passed on reincarnated in many cultures. Also in the beginning there is an empty chair. An empty chair is often used to represent the spirit of someone who has passed on as well. But that's just a small portion of the hidden messages within this MV. If you really delve in deep you will discover that the whole MV can be connected to SHINee forever being 5 members and them including Jonghyun in all that they do. There are 5 trees at the end which could represent the fact that, as Onew has said, even though you may only see 4 members on stage, SHINee will forever be a group of 5. They are in a room full of cameras and their images are being projected on the TV screens, which I see as representing the fact that because SHINee is living in the public eye they can never escape from always being watched by the public. Which doesn't allow them the private space to really grieve and to express themselves and they are always being judged (both the members in their grieving process and what Jonghyun had to go through and what ultimately led him to feeling the way he did, etc.) This MV used a lot of green and aqua blue light to depict the cool and somber feel of the story, but it also was used because, as you know, pearl aqua blue/green is SHINee's fan color and it was used to represent Jonghyun's presence all around them and the support and solidarity they felt with Shawols. The story in the MV is showing the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) the members went through and how they have now at the end of the MV started to find their way out of it and have made the choice to continue to keep on running and continue on as a group, etc. But I could go on and on ... every part of this MV has a deeper message and meaning, you just have to open yourself up to the fact that everything in this MV has multiple meanings and purposes. You see Minho with those oranges, which is really just a giant pile of orange peels, because this part is supposed to depict how he is blindly just going through life, not even able to process what is happening around him. He is not even looking at the peels. It is like his body and mind is on autopilot. If you notice, none of the members ever make eye contact with the camera the entire MV and even in their live performances of the song, you will never see them look at the camera. This was done deliberately as well because they wanted to show how in their grief they were blind to everything that was going on around them and they were closed off to the world and didn't care what was happening outside of themselves even though the world was watching their every move. The part where Key smashes the piano is only one example of of how SHINee shows how they felt for a while after Jonghyun died -- they were angry at everything, including music, and in a way they were blaming "music" and their careers for what happened, and in the MV they were taking their anger out on the piano, etc. The plastic sheet and them flailing under water is supposed to represent how they felt suffocated in their grief and how grieving while in the public eye made them feel trapped at times, etc. Every scene, every image, every movement in their dance, every look, every moment they stand still or look blankly, etc. is very deliberate and is there for a reason. This comeback is part of a three part release celebrating SHINee's 10th anniversary. So they released 3 mini albums with 5 songs each in their The Story of Light trilogy and they had 3 comebacks each 2 weeks apart to showcase their lead track on each of their albums. "Good Evening" and "All Day All Night" were their comeback tracks from Episode 1, " I Want You" and "Who Waits for Love" were their comebacks from Episode 2 and Episode 3 was "Our Page" and "Tonight". Their comeback lasted 6 weeks to represent the fact that it was SHINee's 6th "full length" album. At the end of the six weeks they released a special final MV to celebrate their anniversary and all they have been through over the past 10 years with their song "Countless." "Countless" was an epilogue track that was added to their repackaged Story of Light album. FYI: Make sure when you watch "Our Page" that you also pair the MV with the official lyric video. Every word of "Our Page" was wrote by the members and it's all about Jonghyun. If you know what the lyrics are about it will help you to understand the story being told in the MV. (It would be helpful to understand the lyrics first BEFORE watching the MV.) Before this comeback SHINee had just come off their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) world tour and the members were doing solo activities as they worked on what was going to be an epic 10th anniversary comeback. With Jonghyun's passing, that set them back a few months because they were grieving. It also took time to figure out how they were supposed to function without Jonghyun. But SHINee never really stopped working. Two months after Jonghyun died, SHINee held their SHINee World -- The Best from Now On Concert in Japan and they pretty much were working nonstop until Onew, Key and Minho's enlistment. That concert had originally been planned as part of their 10th anniversary celebration and it had already been sold out. So SHINee felt obligated to honor their fans and continue the concert despite everything, which meant some extra work, because they already had been planning everything with Jonghyun. So they had to quickly go back to the drawing board and figure out how to do it with only 4 members and still honor Jonghyun's memory. In SHINee's fan meeting/concert for their 10th anniversary the members all vowed that SHINee will always be 5 and that Jonghyun will always be involved in everything they do. I think we are always going to have reminders of him in all that SHINee does from now on, and that is the way it should be. He was loved and will never be forgotten, and when possible, should always be involved in things that have to do with SHINee. OT5 forever and ever. I think we can feel Jonghyun's presence and influence in this album and songs because a lot of what made SHINee's sound uniquely SHINee (and this album is no exception) was because of Jonghyun. He not only shaped SHINee's sound because he was the main vocal of the group, but, as you know, he also wrote and composed around 40% of SHINee's songs, so he can be felt in everything they do. It wouldn't be SHINee if we didn't hear his influence shine through in their music, that is what makes SHINee's sound so unlike any other. And, because of that, I think from now on we will always be searching for the hidden messages and moments that represent Jonghyun in everything SHINee does.

this is their first comeback after "everything" happened. This album "The Story Of The Light" is a trilogy album that include 3Eps , "Good Evening" , "I Want You" and "Our Page". Btw, Key's posititon is rapper too. When KPop industry said : Rapper can't sings. Except Key. He can really Rap with sharply voice, He can sing with stable and hits the high note, He can remember dance choreography faster than other members, He design Shinee's costum, He prince of reality show, He has sassy personality. You should hear Key's all english song called Helium. He goes from singing a high falsetto to a low deep talking voice. Should I remention it's an all English song.

At this point, I don’t think you’re going to find what you’re looking for in SHINee. What you’re looking for as an ‘experimental sound’ *is* what you are listening to when you listen to SHINee because SHINee is always the first one to do the genre, to do the style, to do the choreography that is different than has been seen before or is being done by anybody else. Sherlock, Why so Serious, View, Married to the Music- and YES- Good Evening- all incredibly different from each other - all not done in K-pop before SHINee did them.When you say experimental I think you’re Looking for far out there concepts like NTC 127’s Sticker or (fx)’s Rum Pum Pum- and that’s not what you’re going to find with SHINee. “Experimental“ in terms of far out there isn’t what they do, “experimental“ is in terms of first and genre breaking is what they do. 🤌🏻

Regarding your taste of music, I think you're going to be impressed by Dream Girl and Every body. For bsides, you may like Prism and Shift from their album 1 of 1. The whole album is a masterpiece itself.

Okay Aaron this is a hard task, cause their more intense songs are before 2014, which are the old school kpop songs like Sherlock, Lucifer and Everybody. SHINee went through a transition period in 2015 with View, where they have been making softer music until the recent comeback Don't Call Me. If you like Good Evening, I'd recommend to try View first, which is my all time fav, super listener friendly, and it was the first deep house song in kpop industry, super groundbreaking at that time since everyone else is making intense songs. It was composed by the same person who made 4 Walls for F(x) so you will probably find some similarities between them. And 4 Walls was meant to be the continuation of View for SHINee, but SHINee decided to go a completely different way with Married to the Music. Then we can try Tell Me What To Do (also very listener friendly), and 1 of 1 (first retro song in kpop). A lot of the experimental stuff might not seem so groundbreaking now because the whole industry has been doing it, but SHINee was the first one to do it back in the days and pretty much change the trend in kpop. If you would like to try some of their older songs, I'd really recommend watching the concert version. I really really love their first Tokyo Dome performance, some of my fav b-sides include Picasso, Stranger, Evil, Encore and Selene 6.23. There were older SHINee songs I didn't like before, but watching their live performance has changed my mind. Anyways, I am really glad you are discovering different sides of SHINee and hope you are having fun!

This comeback was very meaningful mostly due to the time when it was released. Their first comeback for the 4 of them with Jong watching from heaven and also was their 10th Anniversary as a group (this song was the first of the trilogy called The Story of Light). The choreography is very meaningful too. Koharu Sugawara (who worked before with Taemin for MOVE and Sayonara Hitori) said that she wanted them to dance confronting to each other and not facing the cameras or the public. She thought it was time for them to focus on themselves and not the reaction from the public and media. Live stages from 2018 are so interesting because they intentionally didn't look to the cameras. I think the experimental side of SHINee is more on their bsides and also in context. For example, View now sounds very safe. But in 2015 was the first deep house title track in kpop... almost no one was doing that on that year. And then f(x) released 4 walls, that was a sister song for View (the producers said this on an interview). I don't know if you reacted to these but I think you will enjoy Married to the Music and Tell Me What To Do. For more experimental title tracks of SHINee I recommend Dream Girl, Why So Serious? and Everybody. All of them are from 2013, you can listen the range of sounds and styles they went on that year. That represents a lot their career I think. But on their bsides you will find treasures! SAVIOR, Prism, Symptoms, Undercover, Odd Eye, Evil, Trigger, Alive, CODE (from Don't Call Me album)... I can go on and on. They have an amazing discography. Thanks for keeping exploring SHINee!!

I would say a lot of SHINee's experimental side shines on their B-side tracks. If you listen to a full album from 2013-present, they're a whole rollercoaster experience. The albums from 2008-2010 I would say are relatively cohesive and very R&B heavy for the most part. Musically, I think the experimental side started with 2012's "Sherlock" which is a mashup of 2 different songs - something that SM has done a few times with other artists as well. For title tracks, SHINee tended to push the envelope with fashion and an overall reluctance to stick to one sound. The experimental nature that people suggest with title tracks is their willingness to completely cast aside any image they made from prior releases and start over new. Like going from R&B "Replay" to harder hitting "Amigo" to a trendier autotune "Ring Ding Dong" to a cutesy "Hello" and then to a more modern pop sound with "Sherlock" and then EDM dubstep "Everybody" and then EDM house "View" which was immediately repackaged with a very musical theater "Married to the Music" and then followed by a retro 90's "1 of 1" ... they just bounce around so much with each comeback, never sticking to one thing. So I think individually each song may not seem "experimental" but when you look at their body of work as a whole, it's very eclectic.

Why so serious? is probably their most experimental song! It took me some time to like it. It’s more rock and roll and kinda reminds me of Atlantis. I think that you will like Taemin’s vocals in it!

There's a live stage of this song called 'The Ringtone' it was SHINee first appearance after Minho, Key and Onew went back from the military, also there each one of them performed their song. Taemin with idea, Key with Imagine, Minho with I'm home and Onew with Sign. And they performed 'Marry you' from 'Don't call me' álbum. You should definitely check Key's songs.

since you listened to “good evening”, the next song of trilogy “the story of light” is “i want you”, then “our page” and the last one is “countless” (but you reacted to this one too). one of shinee’s most interesting releases in my opinion is “the misconceptions of us”. the first part of the album is “the misconceptions of you” with title track “dream girl” and the second part is “the misconceptions of me” with “why so serious?”. the second part quite surprised me when i listened to it, so i would recommend this album too. both the tracklist and aesthetic are amazing, the amount of artistry put by members into this album 😩💕 “view” (from “odd” album, lyrics written by jonghyun) is one of shinee’s most popular title tracks that made them trendsetters of deep house music in kpop. this song is hard to ignore when you introduce with shinee and kpop in general

Since you're already react to Good Evening, I think the next should be I Want You, then Our Page and Countless those are trilogy + prologue. After that View or Married To the Music. With SHINee, I wish, your liking in certain kind of music will getting wider spectrum. However SHINee is the icon of experimental songs that somehow always succeed.

Their most experimental title track is Everybody I think, and basically title tracks which have been released before 2015, but honestly I'm not really sure that you're gonna like them, bc they have that production and mixing style which you don't like.

Thanks for your reaction 😊 I can be wrong but for the MVs, I think you will like : "Why so serious?", "Everybody", "Downtown Baby" (Japanese mv), Get the treasure (Japanese mv), DxDxD (Japanese mv) and maybe "Dream Girl" For the b-sides, for which I highly recommand their performances at their concert : Symptoms, Evil, Nightmare, Picasso, Hitchhiking, Stranger, Woof Woof (funny), Kiss Yo, Orgel, Up and Down, Spoiler (who spoil all the songs on the album), Password, Selene 6.23, Dangerous, Trigger, Alive...There are a lot honestly but with those, maybe you will find some at your taste 😁 As for Taemin, for his vocals, Rise and Soldier are a good start 😊The Taemin from his mvs (vocally speaking) and the Taemin from his concert are different (less restraint I will say, he is a beast on stage) Thanks again to keep reacting to SHINee 😊

Shinee ring ding dong, lucifer and sherlock were quite experimental for me :d you should react to them. But before that, I recommend watching the full choreography/performance of this song. A Complete Masterpiece (made by koharu sugawara, a very famous choreographer who had worked with taemin before on move etc.) This is one of my favorite shinee songs. I cry as soon as I hear. Also view is my favorite too. If you react to the episode where Shinee appeared in mmtg you can learn about shinee a lot. Taemin's solo episode was also very informative:d

Wow I was just thinking when is the new title track reaction coming 😆 thank you for that and I'm glad you liked it but honestly sort of expected you to like this one. For now you should definitely react to 'I Want You' and 'Our Page' next since these two complete a trilogy of TSOL together with Good Evening and have a continuous storyline. And I think your initial plan to go backwards chronologically is good, you should just stick with that as most of the songs that you'd probably like are between the timeframe of 2014 to present anyway. Their more experimental title tracks are older but I don't think you'd love them much maybe besides Everybody (you heard a bit of it on their guide and seemed to vibe with it) or Why So Serious? (sort of a rock'ish song, but it's a lot better live). Btw you should also include their Japanese title tracks at least the ones that are on SMTown channel these should have no problem with copyrights so at least Get The Treasure and Winter Wonderland (2017) and Your Number (2016) but the ones that are on SHINee channel might be ok too like Kimi No Sei de / 君のせいで (2017) or Sing Your Song (2016).

Good evening has a very interesting contemporary choreography incorporating chairs you should watch a live to it. Actually now that you reacted to Good Evening and Taemin's Idea I recommend you checking out Key's Imagine, Onew's Sign and Minho's I'm Home so you could watch 'The Ringtone: SHINee is back' it's the first live show on their (SHINee) channel this year before they came back with DCM so you could post it on YT just fine I think. You're right that they are layered but there are only two. It's both breathy it's just that it's a dry and a wet vocal that was synced together to achieve a good vocal reverb while on the chorus, alot of vocal chops are added every last part of lines.
