As we enter the 4th quarter of our homeschool year, I wanted to give you an update on all the curriculum and courses we have been doing this year. In this video series, I'll share what my teens and I have thought of each subject, what worked and what didn't, and our overall ratings. In this first video, I'm discussing history/social studies- Whirlwind World History for my 10th grader and Government, Economics, & Personal Finance for my 11th grader.

Thank you for your honest view on the courses you have done and suggestion on taking 2 years for the course. I know I want to do some guest hallow courses for next year…just need to figure out which one. 😊

Thank you! You recently introduced me to Guest Hollow through your videos and while we haven't yet started any courses, I am preparing to soon. Looking through all of their resources continues to blow me away. I'm trying not to allow myself to get overwhelmed with it, because they do say it's a "buffet", but I can't help wanting to do it all! So, I had the same thoughts, to spread it over two years. I think, that's exactly what we will do with many of their courses because I simply want to dive into all of their resources! 😂

Avid Guest Hollow fans over here. Yes it takes some organizing and scheduling but it’s worth it. Your videos help with this part a lot too. My soon to be 8th graders will be starting Whirlwind world history in January and spanning 18 months to 2 years 😊 thanks Abbey

What a great idea! I will have an 8th grader next year too and have been pondering about adding high school credit for him for next year.

@@Holly_3346 I am so glad you responded as I didn't think of classifying it as a high school credit! Also per Abbey's suggestion some of the books cross over well for a credit in ELA literature

I would love to know how much time your daughter spent per day on average on the Government, Economics, and Personal Finance course for my own planning purposes. I realize every student works at a different pace, but i think it's still helpful. I would also love a video on each of your students' days and any how much time you allocate per day per subject. Your videos are so informative and i always enjoy them.

She spends at least an hour a day on the course. If there are longer book chapters assigned or if the iCivics assignment is a longer one, that might extend to an hour and a half.

Hi there! I really enjoy your videos. They are so informative as I have a 7th grader. The volume is not really that great on some of the videos. I have my TV volume on 60+ and it's hard to hear this one. Maybe it's my television or 40+ year old ears!😂

I'm only halfway through, but thank you for another detailed video. My son (9th) is using Whirlwind History this year, but we will be spreading it out. He started at a private school this year that follows the 4 year classical history cycle, so when I pulled my son, we just picked up Ancient History where he left off in school. My son loves the Guest Hollow history. Next year we will do Medieval History and Literature and use just the Medieval portion of Guest Hollow along with Write at Home's Medieval literature class. Then, we will weave in the rest of it with the 2 years of GH U.S. History. It is such a rich, yet flexible curriculum.

Great review, thank you for sharing this! With regards to workload and time management, do you typically have your high schoolers work on every subject (6-8 classes) every day, or do you split things up MWF / TR or in some other way?

It has depended on the course. They typically work on English, math, science and history/social studies daily. Electives such as my son’s nutrition course or my daughter’s philosophy course are easy to spread out and just do 2-3 days per week. The older they get, the more they manage their own time. My daughter often wants to work ahead early in the week, so she can have more free time Thursday and Friday.

If you would have done the Geography and cultures in 8th grade do you feel it would qualify as HS credit? I thought it would be but wanted to make sure. Next year my daughter will be an 8th grader and very capable student so we are planning several HS level courses. OH convention day! Im so excited!

Absolutely I would count it as a high school credit even if it is done in 8th grade. Each of my kids did a few HS level courses in 8th grade and I've put all those on their transcripts.

Thanks for sharing! Love these in-depth reviews and was excited to see your Guest Hollow reviews. I'm curious...if you were to do over again like you said and have your child do World Geography in 8th, then Whirlwind World History over 2 years in 9th and 10th, and then the American History in 11th and 12th...when would you fit in the Government/Econ/Personal Finance course?! I'm running into this problem with my older kids as we run out of time to fit it all in and I want to do all the things!

Right now I’m thinking I will have my youngest do American history year 2 and gov/econ his senior year. Given his career thoughts, he won’t necessarily need a 4th year of science his senior year which lightens the schedule. And we have balance two GH courses at the same time this year fairly well. Plus now that I have a better idea on the time needed for the gov course, I will limit how many total courses we chose for 12th grade

Have you ever used/considered Notgrass History?

I did look at Notgrass several years ago when we were trying to decide what to switch to for history. My kids had used BJU for several years and I knew I wanted to change. But ultimately, we decided to go with Guest Hollow and that has been the perfect fit for us.

Thank you for your awesome review! I have so many questions. Could we do government and economics one year and then personal finance the next year? Does it break it up to be able to do that? Can I give a full credit for personal finance? Also, can I give a literature credit for every year? Can I do American history early and modern in one year? We are taking your advice and doing World geography in 8th and splitting world history in two years. Then in 9th try to do early and modern American history. 10th and 11th world history also personal finance. 12th government and economics

I have a current 3rd grader but would love your advice on what courses you would suggest when from Guest Hollow. I’m doing the new American History with them next year.

Are they working on econ, govt and finance all at the same time?

Yes. There may be more focus on one of the three on a given day but over the course of the week they’ll cover all 3 subjects fairly equally
