I remember walking into Big Joe’s in White Plains back in 2010 to get my first tattoo. I had just turned 18 and was excited/nervous. Jon was not welcoming at all, barely talked, and almost raised his voice at me and grabbed me to “STAY STILL” (I did shake a little - like I said, I was nervous) Not sure if it was the shop he didn’t like, the fact that my tattoo was a lyric, or he was younger and had a chip on his shoulder. It really turned me off of tattoo shops for awhile. Now, I’m 31 and have spent some good money on tattoos, but Jon lost what would have been a client for years in me that day. Tattoo artist/client relationships are everything! Glad to see Jon has grown as a person/artist.

Some things are definitely learned with experience, in 2010 I had only been tattooing 3 years. My sincere apologies for giving you that experience and I can tell you things are very different now. -Jon

I started in the tattoo industry and got an apprenticeship at 46 yrs old . Only worked weekends as that was the only days the shop was open for 2yrs and started my own shop just after covid regulations lifted. Aug of 2020 is when I opened my own street shop. I know I'm not the man and have a long road ahead. Thanks joe

I feel like if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen with grit and determination. I quit my ft salary job 2 years ago to be a vintage dealer bc I was sick of working a desk job. I have kids, a house and plenty of bills. There were times during that transition where we fell behind on some bills, but ultimately if i would put enough time and work in, the business is successful. I feel like that can be translated to tattooing. After 2 years of constant hustle and making things work with less income, I’m at a place where I’ve learned enough to feel confident and am making decent/consistent money now. Hats off to all of these tattoo artists-y’all are sharing great info and I love listening to the podcast every week.

I'm 34 and in the process of seeking my apprenticeship in Dallas. I've been a practicing artist my whole life and always loved the idea of tattooing, but the perceived culture being so tough and petty/catty scared me off from trying (I blame watching Miami/LA ink in my youth). I also told my mom I'd wait til she was gone to do tattooing, but once you hit 30, you really can't blame things- like not following your dreams- on your parents anymore. I decided my parents deserve to see me happy and thriving while they're here, and thankfully they're in full support of that. 🖤 While I wish I had started tattooing when I got my first tattoo at 17, I also have gotten an art school degree and worked as a full-time artist for years, and I kind of see that as me levelling up off of skin so I can be the best I can when I finally get *on* skin. Thanks for the episode, guys!!!

Some insight on cosmetic tattoo application to answer the question at 47:40 - cosmetic tattooing is supposed to be impermanent because the areas that are being tattooed usually have a lot of unavoidable sun exposure. This will prevent your eyebrows or lips turning colors or fading irregularly. The pigments put into the skin are made for the body to process them quickly, and since they’re being placed in the most shallow layer of skin, why they need to be touched up often. The machines often times use a 2.5 stroke for that reason as well. The needles are almost identical however, they’re still using 1rl / 3rl but I believe they have a shorter taper. Also regards with a cosmetic artist doing fine line tattoos - I actually think this is pretty valid. I currently tattoo and am training on cosmetic tattooing, and have done freelance makeup for years prior to me being in the industry. There’s a few advantages to this. As far as color theory goes, I approach my color application differently because I know how to detect undertones in the skin, and what colors will neutralize certain effects. You also learn a lot about contrast, because you manipulate it the same way in makeup. So those fundamentals carry over a lot better than one would think.

I am glad you guys talked about not doing one arm color and one black and grey. My question is, what about both arms colored and then the legs are black and grey? Because I'll be honest, these color tattoos are getting a lot more painful as I get older 🤣

I'm not a cosmetic tattooer, but I think the semi permanent nature of cosmetic tattooing comes from the terrible tattooed eyebrows people used to get - they aged really badly and were too harsh. Having the option to remove the pigment more easily with something like saline makes sense for it IMO since people can change their makeup preferences over time.

What do you consider people that rented space “private studio” then later started a shop. Still work alone. Are those scratches? I had a traditional apprenticeship. Which taught me value of tattooing and everything I must do for it. I was taken around my city and got introduced to all the OGs. I was given a pass. Sort of speak. Only then I understood value of linage and how not to disrespect. Amazing new comers. As amazing as they can be. Don’t know the couture. What are your thoughts ?

If someone opens a private studio but doesn’t know how to tattoo because they were never taught, yes that person is a scratcher. Just a scratcher in a commercial space.
