@NotsoGreat36 2 жыл бұрын
@@wb8695 cracked and many other small media/comedy companies boards were duped into believing that everyone was moving to Facebook video. So everyone moved there to get that sweet sweet ad money. Which actually wasn’t there. So when your entire platform converts its algorithm to post somewhere with zero actual revenue you lose money. So their parent company probably fired a whole bunch of the staff to try and push a buyout (layoffs always make a company look cash positive because of all the money that isn’t being spent on labor). Which didn’t work and so now companies like cracked and college humor are niche humor sites when they were on track to being humor website juggernauts (hypothetically, since we are in the future and know that everyone decided 15sec-3 minute clips make the brain go brrrr.

@@wb8695 also look at the fact that they have nearly 3million subscribers but only 85k views in 24hours. Much of that is from 2015-2017 when they were hyper focused on the KZfaq algorithm.
@muddlewait8844
@muddlewait8844 2 жыл бұрын
@@wb8695 I think what happened was this: Facebook published stats that *vastly* exaggerated the popularity of video content in general by counting people scrolling past videos as views. This displaced a lot of print content that had consistent but not overstated popularity, as content production moved toward video and away from print because the ad revenue was perceived to be there. This was especially true in the case of Cracked. When Facebook’s lie was revealed, ad revenue for video content dropped off dramatically. Cracked basically went broke, with the incredible talent pool that had been built up over many years fired and scattered across the podscape and with the site itself, having lost both its video and print momentum, needing to be effectively rebuilt, albeit with the advantage of a sleeping subscriber base who could still perk up if given a reason (e.g. Roger).

Well the difference there is that the spoiled kid might eventually get what he wants, albeit undeservingly. There's at least a point to it. Here, people will keep shouting at each other indefinitely over an unwinnable argument for no reward, it's not like either side is going to change their worldview because of some angry comments littered with grammar mistakes and cherry picked (if any) sources.

YT is the weed of social media: not too bad to get into, encourages (or in the worst cases, pressures) obtaining knowledge and care in order to properly use it, and still possible to avoid and get away from the worst parts. Twitter is the black tar heroin cut with fentanyl of social media: causes nothing but irreparable damage to your life that you need to stay as far away as possible from - and if you are ob it, you had better cut it completely out of your life immediately.

I have a reddit but only so I can see the answers for some very specific questions (like "how do you beat level __ on videogame ________") every once in a while, but just like Facebook I don't post. I deleted my Mta accounts two months ago. No Facebook, no Insta. No daily insults, no daily arguments with narrow mindet toxic people. Yes, I lost a few people I really liked and shared a similar set of values. But these nice friendly interactions were just a small percentege of my daily dose of social media. Thanks to totally toxic group admins who bully everyone with a slightly different opinion out of the group to keep their bubble nice and clean and free from reasonable conversations. I don't feel sorry I didn't feed your Gottkomplex and your narcicisstic desire to be in control. Yes, I did spend to much time on Facebook and Insta. And blocking me for having a neutral balanced opinion and my annoying asking for science backed sources made me realize: This is not good for my mental health... I think of the Metaverse like an more evil thing like 1984 by Orwell.

This video made me realize something. I've always had low dopamine levels thanks to my super fun ADHD which as always made it harder to enjoy certain things people do for that sweet chemical hit. People always say that excersize while hard makes them feel good afterwards, it never has for me. So while i have some social media (it's very hard not to in modern society) i barely spend any time on it. Don't have Instagram, TikTok or even Twitter. And i'm not saying this to be all smug and superior but it's wild that i didn't register that the reason people are addicted to social media is dopamine. And for once my barely functioning brain actually works for me. Huzzah now back to trying to trick myself into doing useful work.

Hiya, Freya :) I am totally on board with you regarding social media. I do have a Twitter account, but it's totally private. I use it like a diary, noting down when I take my meds and how I am feeling at the time. I'm physically disabled, but that also affects my mental health. I learned some years ago that having an active Twitter account was not good for that. I still have the "public" one, but only in case I feel like I have to share some news. I don't even go to the account, I just use the "share with" option, hit send or whatever it is, and go back to what I was doing. As an aside, you said exercise doesn't raise your spirits, as it were, but have you tried singing? Either belting out favourite tunes at home or joining a choir (preferably a large one because it works better amongst others feeling the same way. It's a "the more the merrier" thing). It's always been something that I love to do, though choirs are no longer possible for me (I used to perform solos back in the day, but I developed crippling stage fright. Another reason for singing with a lot of people!). I find it gives the ultimate "clean high", so to speak. The longer and louder you do it, the better you feel. I know many others who joined choirs as much for the friendship as the music, but everyone has said how they "fly" back home after practice or a concert. I promise I am not trying to patronise you in any way (my youngest has ADD and the next one up is on the Asperger's spectrum, so I get it. I know very well that treatments - medical or otherwise - are completely personal), or even saying this *will* be good for your dopamine, it just works for me and those I've ever spoken to about it. It _might_ help, and it's a lot more fun than hitting the gym! Even if it's in the shower, sing a favourite song as loud as you can. It could help you get that buzz that is missing from so many of our lives. Best wishes to you. I hope you are happy, and if so, you stay that way. If not, you find something that makes you happy (there are lots of possible hobbies, for example, that can affect your mood positively). Take care :D

@@y_fam_goeglyd Thank you for your kind words. I do actually like singing although more often than not just listening to some good tunes moves the needle a little. I didn't mean to imply nothing brings me dopamine just that it's usually not much or for very long. But I'm 30, I'm pretty used to it by this point. Anyway just wanted to say thanks because of how long and thoughtful your comment was. Hope you have a lovely day/night 😄

Yeah - I've never done Instagram, FaceBook, nor Tik Tok. I used Twitter for a bit many, many years ago for about a year during the Obama administration. Mostly, it's just KZfaq nowadays. Honestly, the ONLY thing most social media platforms are good for is sharing pictures of your kids and pets to your family. Anything past that gets toxic in a heartbeat.

I think it's like with money or tools; it's how you use them. KZfaq is technically a social media platform, but as long as we're aware of just about everything Roger said, and we are capable of thinking our own thoughts, and we speak to each other in the comments the same way we would in person, social media can be a very useful tool, or at the very least, an occasional form of entertainment. And if you disagree with me, I hope you fall in a well. 😂

Thanks for producing another episode of Roger. I enjoy this playful insights into modern culture and current events. It appears this one shows us the dangers of social media to appeal to peoples need for engagement to the point of addiction. Human nature, following the path of least resistence, turns people into use of social media as an instrument of dopamine generation. Worse still, it promotes a culture of immature emotional expression and reation, all while eclipsing mature dissemination of useful information about health, money and relationships.

...Not that I don't agree, especially since I've always loathed social media even before people (finally) realized just how bad Facebook actually was (but largely only because they turned into conspiracy theorists), but this feels like it should almost have a NSFW in the title given all the moaning. That would still be true of the social media anyway, especially if you replaced "work" with "well-being". Half-joking prudishness aside, this was sadly desperately needed, especially with the way Tiktok has been taking off over the past year even though it will likely turn out to be *even worse* overall.
