Any person can end up behind bars, will struggle to leave, and have little chance of not coming back again. Experts, human rights activists, and people with personal experience help us in our grand quest: to understand the inner workings of Belarus's prison system.
There are more than 30.000 people currently imprisoned in Belarus. No less than 20.000 of them are forced to work within the system's manufacturing facilities, doing anything from making uniforms for the "Evroopt" company and children's bedframes, to working with metal and even amber. That makes the Department for the Execution of Punishments, a subdivision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the largest commercial manufacturer in the country.
In this video we try to figure out what it is exactly, that's going on behind the Belarusian prison system's closed doors, and why things look the way they do.
