seeing those hammer marks reminded me of what an older mechanic told me once. I was try to use a 7 lb sledge hammer to move a shaft, the shaft wouldn't move and all I was doing was causing the shaft to swell. he said don you can do a lot of damage using a small hammer. he was right one time with a 14 lb sledge did the job. lol

I think I'd call in a scaffolding company and get the entire exterior of the house covered. It really isn't that expensive and then both of you could work together when needed. It'll be really useful when placing the windows, siding, trim and the roof; whether you do it yourself or contract it out.

Hi Guys, When using the straps, you can get more leverage if you separate the strap from the SIPs with a piece of wood. Like a bow. Makes the orthogonal component of the strap force to the SIP surface, bigger. You put the block where the sip has the bent and might have more control where to induce the counter-bend. Always fun to watch.

Jesse, next time pinch the ratchet strap under a piece of wood, that way you aren't just relying on the surface area of the had of the screw or use fender washers on the screws. Also, put a block of wood flipped on edge under the strap, that way you are getting a pull that isn't just purely tension but you are re-directing the direction of pull with the block of wood under the strap. if you have a hard time imagining it , imagine a 4' block under the strap, all of a sudden you are pulling perpendicular to the wood (extreme case for illustration only) and not parallel only, would have helped to lift the panel.....
@noneyabusiness969
@noneyabusiness969 6 жыл бұрын
Hey There Jesse, I have a suggestion to get leverage on those saggy SIPs at the low end of the eaves. Build a 2x4 triangle assembled with the wide sides facing, with a 3-4-5 dimension profile. (Like 10" 13.25" and 16.675") Screw the triangle to the SIP above that saggy one, then screw the triangle with the long side on the SIP, and the short side facing away from your saggy SIP so the hypotenuse faces the sagging SIP. THEN screw your strap to a point above the triangle the same length as the short side of the triangle, (10" above) and that will lift the strap off the exterior face of the roof, giving you the required lift / leverage to make the strap more effective.

This series makes me want to build a timber frame house if I had the time. However, this series has also shown me how time consuming installing SIP panels can be. It takes 5 times as long and has so much prep work before they even arrive. All of these problems they faced would not have occurred with a plywood roof, spray foam and installing the drywall last AFTER the house has been weathered in.

Great team work you guys. It’s awesome to see you guys still getting along. Just a suggestion while working in the man basket I use, is to have a rope that’s long enough to reach the ground for any tools or materials needed in the basket ,saves a lot of walking/climbing for the ground lady. A hitch and half hitch work great for pieces like the lumber needed at height. Be safe.

They say that women make better equipment operators. I used large man lifts for all sorts of aerial chores. I prefer the kind that I can operate from the bucket though. Jessie could have used a jack up there to lift the panel a bit to slip the board in place. Leverage is a wonderful tool.

couldn't you have put a 6x6 standing on the lift floor, under your eave, abd used the forklift to raise the beam allowing the board to go in place? Also, you need a big plastic dead blow hammer. It's filled with lead shot and when you swing it the lead shot goes to the trailing end (inside cavity), and when it hits the lead shot slams into leading face and has many times the impact of it's weight. Also it will not destroy the beam with hammer marks.

There were a few times I wanted to mention using proper safety procedures and equipment is so important. Also to bring items and materials to you on the platform you could use a rope and a pulley? With your concern of the buckled roof panels- put roof cleats on so you could get up on and use longer lags- draw the panels tight and straight to your Gable and regular rafters....keep up the Good Work!

Feel good idea...our family started building custom home in the mid 40's now we are all retired..but something that will make you feel good after the roof is done and your dry finish the up stairs loft. I can't tell you what a relief you have for two reasons. 1) the sheet rocking, mudding, sanding done before the windows are put in then you will not have to put up with all the dust mess dust etc on the main level as you finish that part of the house. 2) When you go up the loft you will feel farther ahead. And of course you can use for all sorts of reasons even if it not painted (which you might want do) I can't tell how many clients remarked how much better they felt just see a loft area done before the rest of the house because when you done on the main floor you just about done. Just a tip.for what it's worth!Your doing great and of course your time frame is your time frame enjoy the journey!All then best.

@toddabbott781
@toddabbott781 6 жыл бұрын
I thought exactly the same things. Even with just scaffolding he could have levered the sip panels up a bit with a long board as a level. Plus with 2 people up there it would have gone 4x faster... especially with scaffolding along the back as well. Literally in one day they could have had all the boards on the side including both corners and put in all the screws and bolts in the roof and be ready to move onto the next section. I personally do not see the point in the sips as they do not save labor as there is so much added work and it traditional wall and ceiling system would have reduced the need for the crane and all the massive amounts of screws all over the place. Also they are damaging that OSB leaving it out in the rain all the time. It is likely starting to swell. Just everything they choose seems to be the slowest, most expensive and most complicated way possible.

If any of your foam chases intersect a plumbing/electrical chase find a way not to fill in your utility chases. You can run the utilities first or put in a short piece of pipe then fill the void on either/both sides of the pipe. It's like a sleeve in a concrete footer/wall left for plumbing/electric. Make sure the sleeve's internal diameter is larger than the external diameter of the pipe you are going to run.
