This is so awesome.I just bought a cheep one 3 months ago and wish I knew about this one then. It's definitely what I will buy the next time. I knew there was something more advanced than the one I had bought 7 years prior,( Hunter) which was the smart thermostat at that time. But I didn't have the time to research it while working two jobs. Now I can't justify buying another when this one still works. HaaaH!!!I think my desire to upgrade will eventually over - rule my frugality in the long run though. Thanks for this informative video.

My smart thermostat paid for itself the first month. I love it!!! One caution though, is in the winter time, don't think you can drop your thermostat down to 40 degrees when your going to be gone for a long time. 2 reasons are 1, your house has cold spots and although its 40 at the thermostat it might be freezing or below freezing by pipes or places your not getting a lot of circulation. And 2, is if you go too low it takes forever to get back up in temp and can be just as bad as if you kept it at your desired temp all day long, if not worse.

That is a great point. I would recommend never going below 55 on the heat setting. Also, with cooling it is better to keep it running to keep the humidity out of the air as that is what takes the longest to bring back down. Great comment, thanks!!!

The savings on heating depend on how long the house is in the idle state. The longer it's at 40F the more you'll save.. like when you're away on vacation. True some parts of the house may get cooler but unless the cooler parts are outdoors it shouldn't matter. If your house relies on house heating to keep pipes from Freezing then it was never constructed to local regulations in the first place. Of course if you have pets you'd not leave them for long so that's not an issue...or shouldn't be. If I went on vacation I'd set mine to off but with remote access its possible to blast some heat while away. I'd also put a wifi thermometer in the colder parts just to monitor what's happening there.

It's gets to minus 45 here in Canada, our pipes most definitely rely on home heating to keep from freezing.

Install a THP9045A adapter. Honeywell has a lot of guides and even videos on how to do it. The only part that scares people is that you typically need to open up your furnace to install the adapter.

IF YOU HAVE AN OLD TSTAT THAT HAS NO DIGITAL DISPLAY YOU WILL HAVE TO ADD THE C (24vCommon) WIRE TO YOUR INSTALLATION FROM THE UNIT. If your lucky there will be a spare wire. You want to find where the transformer is , indoor or outdoor. The common is needed for any digital display tstat.

Thanks for the video. I've had my honeywell for over a year. I love it except at times I lower the AC settings say from 77-76 and the number display will switch over to the lower number BUT the HVAC never clicks on. it just switched to the lower number. i'm wondering why it does that? Is the Honeywell faulty or is there a disconnection between Honeywell and the HVAC? It works terrific otherwise. I use mainly air condition on auto circulate all year around here in Florida.

Installed the Honeywell RTH9585 for Oil/forced hot air (double checked wiring and all connections (C,W,Y,G,R) before turning power back on) and ran into a few issues: 1) set fan to "automatic"; it ran non-stop and would not turn off; 2) heat wouldn't "kick-on" either so turned heat to "off", but continued to show on display that it was on (?). Tried running through the set up process again (with some help) with same results. Reinstalled my old battery operated thermostat and heating system went back to normal operation; no issues. Any ideas/suggestions on why the fan wouldn't stop running and the heat wouldn't "kick-on"? one minor issue: touch display wouldn't let me change time & date (although I believe that's controlled via Wi-Fi). Thanks.

I have a programmable thermostat, but it's not a smart one. My thermostat has an energy button that tells me how long the ac has run yesterday, this week and last week. I find that invaluable to know if I am saving energy. Do any of these smart thermostats have that feature? It's really the only way I know of to track energy usage.

I installed one this past winter. Works really well for heating. Just tried to turn on for A/C. I can hear the thermostat turn on and the outside unit turn on, but no air blowing? Do you think it's a thermostat issue (wiring) or an A/C unit issue?
@godzilladestroyscities1757
@godzilladestroyscities1757 5 жыл бұрын
That may be a loose wire. Typically if the outside AC unit starts but the air does not blow, it's a problem with wiring. It's really rare that it would be a tstat issue. The AC circuit and fan circuit in the tstat are interconnected, so usually if there's a problem with the tstat, neither the AC nor the fan would work.

Is there a compatibility issue with older systems? I have not looked behind my panel but i was wondering if there has to be a minimum number of wires going to you thermostat for this type of system to work? My house was converted to central heat and air in the late 90s probably 1997 ish but i think they used an old heater thermostat hookup from the mid century house was built in 1960 ish. Do i just need to pull the panel off and look to see how many wires there are? or will the system just work with how many wires it is given and why you said it is more important for you to keep track of the letter and not the colors. Thanks for the info :)

+SSLFamilyDad I am 150 feet above sea level but with the trade winds and ceiling fans we are usually pretty comfortable. Temps average in the mid 70's year around. We do like to keep the back lanai door and some windows open to catch the breeze..Some houses and most of the expensive hotels do have AC though and some homes at much higher elevations have heat.When guests from the mainland visit they usually ask if we have AC but after a coupe days they seem to acclimate and say they no longer need it. I think its the humidity that bothers them more than the temp.

@godzilladestroyscities1757
@godzilladestroyscities1757 5 жыл бұрын
The longevity is affected by the power supply. If there's any spikes in the supply voltage, it will prematurely fail. Also, before installing one of these, it would be wise to check for backfeeds from the system. Backfeeds will kill the circuit board in it. So long as the power is stable and the system wiring is good, then 5-10 years is a good life span. No one knows how long they can last. Regular cleaning with CO2 spray, the stuff you use to dust a computer would probably make it last longer.

there is some truth to that but it is still more efficient to lets say, turn it down 5 degrees all day long while you are not there and then only heat it more for the few hours in the evening you are around the home. The savings is from not having to maintain as high of a temp the entire day or night even though it does need to run longer to get the house back up to temp. Still less than running all day off and on

It's a nice interface but these things cost upwards of $500. I just got a Honeywell wifi older model for $70. Big difference. I wanted to know if the connection to the internet allows the thermostat to reactw better to the weather. Like does it come on earlier in the morning big the outside temperature is colder and therefore bit will take longer to heat up the house I know that it does this calculation without external temperature by it's adaptive recovery system however is it smart enough to "know" when the outside is particularly cold and therefore allow extra time to reach temp. Weather can change on a daily basis despite the season. For coolit this ability to knot the weather upcoming can be particularly useful because the system could prime the house for a hot day to come by perhaps turning the heat off early on the day before or even pulling in cooler night air in preparation for a hot day ahead.. however I don't think we're there yet with Honeywell.

I believe you save more money leaving your temperature settings at one temperature, because everything conducts the heat or cold, so the system works hard every time you change it, this temperature control is for comfort not a big energy saver,
@Floortile83

I save more money by not having a smart thermostat. I set my temp to 74, and then have to physically walk to my thermostat when I want it cooler. I'm lazy, so i must be really hot to wanna get up and change it... A smart thermostat makes it too convenient to low the temp. Thereby using more energy because I'm changing it more often.

Do you still have the aquaponics in your basement? I can't believe your humidity is so low.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 8 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, sure do. And the humidifier runs on the furnace to keep it at 25. The only place I notice humidity is right above the aquaponics system on the basement window. It condensate s when it is cold out
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 8 жыл бұрын
+cobra646 sure do, it honestly doesn't effect the humidity too much. The basement is always a bit more humid anyway

Installed one with the same wire configuration and everything. Doesn't work. Screen never turns on. Double checked connections and everything. Old one was a battery powered Honeywell and all I to do extra was connect the c wire which was already there as a spare.

Can you help me. I had the same thermostat except I had a O/B orange wire. And my white wire was connected to the W2 terminal. So when I installed the Honeywell thermostat I just matched them up to the same terminal but my A/C is blowing hot air when I turn it to cool mode

It could be that your C wire ( blue common wire) isn't connected at the furnace. I hope you figured it out. I had a similar problem. Previous owners/tech had made a mess of my wiring at the furnace, so my wires at the thermostat were out of order.

Trying to install this one. It's beyond frustrating how the manufacturer instructions REALLY don't tell you how to wire the damb thing. My old thermostat had like 9 or 10 wires. Do I need to connect them ALL? OR NO? When you're hooking up your wires, which ones are you connecting? Please name them as they're going! And those names don't always correspond from one make/model tl another. I can't believe how much guess work in left to do here!

If you had 9 wires actually hooked up to your old thermostat then you have a much more complicated multi zone system in your home. I might recommend calling their tech support line
