I don't think you know the meaning of "down to earth". Truth of the matter is, in HK, and also the rest of China, that one exam determines your educational options which in turn determines your career options. It's not like in the U.S, Canada, Australia, where if you fail in one way, you can easily find an alternative way to get to the same place.

Not from China but we go through a similar exam where I'm from. They drill this into your head since primary school, and I spent years in fear of failing. I ultimately passed and got into a university but that only highlighted how little I got out of highschool, except an anxiety disorder. Everything I learnt for my adult life, I learnt in college.

it's just one exam. I've encountered/interviewed plenty of very bright youngsters who have obtained perfect results in examinations but lack actual real-life confidence, charisma, "people skills,", communication skills, and the inability to work in a team. I know of so many people who failed in life but had obtained great results during their school and uni years.

If their colleges are free or low cost, it's a lot more fair than the U.S. system where mostly the children of the wealthy are the most privileged and not necessarily the smartest or hardest-working.

At least that is what was implanted to people in east asia, hence why they study so much. Hong Kong beginning to show this pattern strongly in recent years. But if you want to know where this is most prevalent, go look for South Korea academic culture. You're basically forced to study the moment you are born from morning to sleep.

Here in Brazil we have to go through a similar situation with the big test called ENEM, by doing this test we can get into a public university, but the process is very stressful and it can go much longer than the high school period, specially if you want to do something that is more competitive to get in, like Med School. I finished school in 2020 and I’m still trying to get into university (med school 😪) and like myself there are many others that are going through this though path… I hope someday we can all smile happily together doing what we always wanted to do. Next year (when the results come out) remember me to come back here and tell you guys if I got in or not! I hope to bring great news! 🙏🏼

Unless someone is studying specific subjects that require licence such as engineering, medicine and law, going to university may be a waste of time and money. Having said that , university is heavily subsidized in hk so maybe it is not as bad as US.

My country has a similar exam when going into college. The pressure was crazy. Sometimes, passing wasn't enough. In my case, I had to be the best. My experience for not meeting my parents expectations was scathing

sorry, but putting all of your value on a score is not a way to live. this is not directed at the students. when we see what countries rate the highest among the happiest in the world... it's not hong kong and it's not china. these countries are putting too much pressure on freaking children..... where these test scores are put in place to benefit the students.... but rather companies. it's such a shame....

@@HypatiaMuse Wait until you hear about European universities. For France it's 175 to 618, depending on the level. Sure you'll have to pay for accomodation but university itself is really cheap. That does not include however some specific private college called "grandes ecoles" that are up to 15 000 euros per year

There just aren’t a lot of girls in China due to their old one child policy rule, many girls killed or adopted into another country. Myself included 🇨🇦
