A girl at the heart of Hong Kong’s democracy movement . Two years since her arrest made her an accidental superhero of the Umbrella Movement, the infamous ‘Chalk Girl’, now 16, must decide whether to rejoin the battle for Hong Kong’s democracy. Trouble is brewing as the city gears up for the first elections since Umbrella, and this new generation of young Localists will be moving from front-line street battles to stand in mainstream politics. Chalk Girl is torn between wanting to respect her family, who are concerned about the risks of her activism, and her determination to stand against Beijing’s interference. These young localists see this as a fight to save their beloved city, and in the middle of it all, Chalk Girl is just a young girl wanting to feel part of something bigger, and a long way from grown-up.

She seems to be a smart girl with a strong allegiance. I find that admirable. It seems some people think she's on the wrong side, but that is true of any change. I do not know enough about the situation, I cannot say whether she's right or wrong. Freedom is worth dying for, and yes I am American.

@Golden Eagle I don't think you understand what she meant. I am from Hong Kong and have lived in China for some time. I am now living and working in the United States. I have experienced the "freedom" in both places. The freedom that Maddie is referring to is the ability to criticize the government and the authorities openly with no consequences, which is something people cannot do in China. If you disagree on this, perhaps you can provide some information on how Chinese openly criticize their government. For your "lack of Freedom" argument, can you give me some examples so we can discuss. I just want to have a rational discussion.

It is so misleading and simplistic to say that the Umbrella Revolutionaries "redefined themselves as localists". It is just not true! On the whole a beautiful and significant film. It is good to focus on one person's story to bring this political issue to life.

she should not trust her "school friend, Tinos!" as the government seems to fear teenagers, omg, for *real??* and then, Tinos is so calm and seems so clueless about how Bejing getting its way would affect him?.. considering how Beijing sees kids as such a threat as they protest and express their concerns? wouldn't put it past the possibility that Tinos and/or his family, is in some way, shape or form, being offered *benefits,* financial and/or importantly-to-them-otherwise, that would seriously *incentivse* him/them to work against her - even if 'only' in conversation, trying to 'gently' influence *Chalk Girl* to move in the opposite direction, politically. but, whatever may or may *not* be true about *how* Bejing does its bidding re: kids they somehow feel threatened by [again, *omg, really??* ], it's *amazing* to me how *weak* the government there *is,* in that way!..so weak that they'd *actually* be threatened by *any* teenager's* political beliefs [lord god & jesus/yeshua and mohammed, too!!], *please* 🙏 🙏 give me strength!].

Typical troll--attacking your opponent on completely different matters to make yourself not as bad, because your position is so indefensible. Every country in the world has their own problem. Indonesia's fundamentalist muslims are just as bad as Chinese severe distaste for democracy and free speech. If I wanted to do as you did, I could point out that Chinese economy will eventually implode in the next decades due to its over reliance on manufacturing and its inability to transform to creative-based economy. It's locked into population numbers and natural resources availability, and unable to innovate as great as Japanese, Korean, and Western economies do. It's inflexible, it operates completely at the whims of the Party. It's a disadvantage that freer countries like Indonesia (or even Hong Kong) don't have. Like John Green used to say, "The Chinese have Kung Fu and Panda, but they cannot create a film like Kung Fu Panda" Now let's stop this childish dogfight and point out to solutions instead.

Troll? When I spoke the truth and you have a history of racism discrimination and genocide of ethnic Chinese. Who tried to suppress the views of others "In before Chinese bots..." give me a break acting the victim. You can speculate about China's demise all you want that's your view. I point out plain facts that had happen in the past and happening even now in your country. You took cheap shots at us so expect retaliation for your "childish" comment. Kung Fu Panda is a great film? Heard of racist stereotype? If a certain prophet got an animation let's see all hell break loose.

By the way of course my comment matters, when your country can't even deliver a fair and free society. What right have you to talk about freedom in another country when your people and government are oppressing others? Perhaps you should look at home first.

kaching77 I won't deny any of the things you point out, because they really are facts. There are discrimination of Chinese descent in Indonesia. There are muslim fundamentalists too. But what good does it do attacking others without pointing a solution? You fell completely into the nationalistic trap, which is really unhelpful. Tbh, I dont have any solution for Indonesia's problem. It's a decades-long deeply rooted racism, starting from the colonial era, and it's going to take decades more to root it all out. However, China's solution is completely clear. It should not be Hong Kong becoming more Chinese, it should be China becoming more like Hong Kong.

You don't need the Guardian to put up a video :) please everyone, put up video that you think will change the world. The Guardian is a two faces newspaper, promoting rights for women and denigrating the rights of young men. We all have a brother, boyfriend, father. We love them and want the best for them too. PLEASE read " Free women Free men " by Camille Paglia. It will open your eyes ;) much love xo

why? what has Hong Kong done to 'deserve' freedom? It's part of China, it has been for thousands of years, except for the time when it was a British colony.

I don't see why HK Can't be independent. There are other nations that are Basic city States such as Singapore, San Marino, The Vatican, Kuwait, Brunei, Gibraltar, Multiple Caribbean Islands, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, The List goes on. A City State like Hong Kong wouldn't only work, but it could be prosperous. same thing goes for Macau. Many Nations that are city States have powerful ally's, and for Hong Kong, they wouldn't be too hard to find.

Quentin Browne I don't know why you have to be so mean. She was *14*. She's now 16 and still in school! She's been arrested several times already, and that's far more than many activists have when they're in their 30's. You also don't understand how much shame that getting arrested at that age means for a young girl in Chinese society, and what she has put on the line. She's still a vulnerable and young teenager, and yet she's got far more heart than you. You can say she hasn't done much for the movement as a single person, but do not insult her for her youthful passion to save Hong Kong.
