As a Chinese guy who's been UK for half of my life, I'm really glad CNA released this piece. Despite the "miss-labelling" of Keybros, it still managed to show the arguments really well. Now people can judge with their own eyes instead of believeing western media blindly.

miss labelling eh?? I guess you do not watch CNA that often! this mouth piece of Singapore is basically the echo chamber of western bias media. I am overseas Chinese myself who live next to this country, there are good and bad things about mainland China for it is not a perfect country just like any other country, you don't have to take side, just an honest reporting which in this case I think CNA is lacking. To me, the pro democracy guy is naive and arrogant to generalize the whole 1.4b people, I dont think he has ever set his foot on China but basing his view from what he read from MSM. But that's probably because he is young and his understanding about geo-politic is quite limited, i can understand that, like I was when i was his age, but now I have totally different view.

Both of them are actually rational and decent and has some good points but they also overly generalizing and nitpicking include the pro Beijing guy. Yes, he has some points about the west but at the end its not about them. It's between HK and the Beijing Government. It's also not even about Mainland Chinese people but many makes it about them and how being something other than Chinese is a threat. Because obviously not everyone in China are the same including the vaules of Chinese youths. There are multiple regional identities and ethnicities. But the government encourages homogeneous identity and being Han Chinese. The pro-democracy Hker seems to prefer people to acknowledge how Hong Kongers has a different culture which is obvious and want HK to maintain it's autonomy like they used to. That isn't irrational especially if they compared their past economic freedom and goverment style to current policies. Yes, he is very bias but he has his point.

At times HKers and Taiwanese netizens would label me a communist just because I said Trump is racist and would support Biden if I were an American. Keybros is much more mature than KK. Keybros also has a much better command of the English language. KK said that he is ashamed of being identified as Chinese because some Chinese litter on the street and spit on the floor. This just shows he is such a small-minded person. Should he feel the same towards his many native Hongkongers who did exactly the same thing when Hong Kong was poor years back. This just shows how shallow a person he is when it comes to judging (other) people. Overall, KK has just reinforced my impression of these so called "protesters" who are nothing, absolutely nothing, but part of a bunch of HK spoiled brats who are so despicably self-righteous and condescending. These same (self-righteous and condescending) attitudes that are despised by people who truly understand and respect human values.

Keybros appeals bit more mature yet i feel what he said has been scripted somehow by his pro China affiliates. And i cant never stop being skeptical in all pro China movement and speech. @@ypyk2526 I'm not Chinese and my country has a lot of beef with China. But I'm also a person of reason and I always try to be dispassionate when it comes to political analysis. Your two questions can be easily answered: First, studying abroad has nothing to do with patriotism. Gandhi studied in England and was against English rule. Second, "protests" must be done within the confine of the law, unless you want to start a violent revolution. Smart people know how to protest within the grey areas of the law, but stupid "protesters" will always be exploited by opportunistic politicians for their personal (political) career gains.

the thing you have to understand is that all of these kids are not spoiled brats but normal kids that are like most other kids very impressionable at their young ages. the problem here is the fact that these kids are being lied to and taken advantage of by outside groups and at their own expense. it has been documented by the cia cutout the NED that they have been there funding and training these kids and they started a little over two years before the protests even started. so this is just the case of a foreign power taking advantage of children to promote there own geopolitical agenda. the worst part is that if this were to be successful these kids would not have fought for freedom or a better life like they think, but for the right for America to be their new ruler!!! this is why its mostly kids because older people in Hong Kong remember what British rule entailed!!! this is a sad situation and the fact that the NED is funding the same thing in Thailand, Myanmar and Xinjiang needs to be addressed and stopped!!! This pro-democracy activist sounds very patriotic toward being a Hong Konger, but sadly at the same time, he also sounds like a fascist. When a person's feeling of patriotism is based on looking down at another group of people that are different from them, they are slowly becoming fascist. Within the study of social science, this is the common problem being seen all over the world with a strong correlation of patriotism plus propaganda equals hate, and hate leads to fascism, and fascism leads to crimes.

Hong Kong people very unfortunately have an enormous sense of superiority over Chinese from other parts of the world, but especially over Chinese from mainland China. Their unfounded sense of superiority has blindsided them and caused them to be extremely ignorant of what's really happening in the world. As a result, when they suddenly find that the country bumpkins from mainland China that they look down upon are actually doing so much better than them, with degrees from prestigious overseas universities, speaking fluent English and Mandarin, working in highly paid professional jobs in international financial institutions, living in high end apartments, while they struggle in low paying jobs, they cannot help but to feel envious. Eventually their envy just boils over into outright anger and erupts into violence. It's time for the Hong Kong people to come to terms with reality. The sooner they do, the better for them.

I think people who have entered the workforce are aware of China’s impressive progress. It’s mainly the teens who have not come to terms with this reality, due to their self-selected exposure to the world. Especially vulnerable are the children of parents who desperately cling onto Cold War views of China and “Communism.” If and when those kids get in trouble for breaking the law, the parents have created a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s really twisted and sad.

@@jiahsisco5667 Really sad how education varies in the US, I learned that in my ap world class. In short, it was the result of The First Opium War between Great Britain and Qing China (1839-1842). British merchants were selling opium to smugglers, which caused a rise in addiction (This was done so they could buy Chinese tea, porcelain and silk, which were really prized in Europe). It was banned and opium in the major city of Canton was seized, with any new sellers being threatened with a death penalty. Britain didn't like that and sent the Royal Navy out. They had the better ships and guns so they won. In the end, the Treaty of Nanking was signed and Hong Kong was given to Britain. Ports which allowed foreigners to do trade in China were also opened up.

He was saying in a point that Hong Kong people have positive way of life, and more well rounded than mainlanders. Hong Kong people actually immerse into diversity way more than mainlanders due to British colonisation. There were negative aspects about colonialism but British actually were very good administrators. Hong Kong law has good democratic values with good welfare system. It is a very small country with flourishing economy before and after chinese handover.

@@alexhe926 mainlanders have language barriers with foreigners. Hong Kong people are not very friendly with strangers. But they have English speaking skills and ability to communicate. Hong Kong people are generally more open minded than mainlanders due to their exposure under democratic laws and welfare. Mainlanders are generally different on ideals. They are more conservative but very limited due to limited amount of news and education has given them. Here is a thing, mainlanders all over China are very different. It depends where you go. Shanghaiese have cold personality. They are straightforward. They don’t deal or waste time with a person who doesn’t have something to offer them. Shanghainese men are often friendlier. Hong Kong tend to be rude and busybody. But once you get to know them, they are very open minded and know a lot of things. They are very hardworking. Here is a thing, people in Hong and mainlanders are actually very good people. Very good soul. They have their own sense of intelligence. Hong Kong are more well rounded. Mainlanders are more like eager to learn. Here is what separate them- it is not human themselves. It is politics that divided them. But more how they are different. Hong Kong people wanted more capitalism, free market economy, democratic- Republican value. More free country. China is communist country with state capitalism, socialism, big govt interference, less freedom of speech- more controlled. They even ban social media from overseas. And they make their own. This is about which place has better system to live in. To be frank, Hong Kong has a very good welfare system and fixed tax system. They don’t charge extra taxes. The government don’t run after you for more taxes. China has salary or ownership cap. You don’t want to make too much money in China. Because If you do, the government gets a big share. It is very limited applying freedom of speech. It is less restrictive than North Korea but more restrictive than Hong Kong. When you need information, you get more from Hong Kong than China. Which place do you prefer. That is the point of debate.

@@BC-xj1yn okay let's break down what you said and assumed: 1. I don't assume to know what kk thinks or Really stands for. So foreign intervention, or separatism.... Whatever I just commented on keybros fallacies, which he tried hiding with smooth talking. 2. When I said there is only one type of freedom, that's right isn't it? Either you speak what you think or you get suppressed by the state, there's no third alley here. Freedom is not a 'point of view', it's a state of being. YOU ARE EITHER FREE OR NOT FREE! 3. Hong Kong WAS free my friend, what the democratic youth are fighting for is the growing control of China in Hong Kong. In case you missed the memo, China implemented a bunch of changes like: increasing no. of pro party legislators, censoring the Hong Kong media, police violence, mass surveillance. Now for people like you what the CCP does is, it slowly increases the control until it has creeped up behind you and it's over. Before you know what's going on. It's like a disease, cut it off before it spreads and rots it to the core.

A simple-minded way of stigmatization: once a single Chinese spitting on floor was found, the whole China must be ignoble. Conversely: with clean and tidy appearance, the westerners must be noble, no matter how much blood of Native Americans, Africans…Afghans on their hands. That’s a successful execution of Anglo-Saxon policy: Divide and Rule.

right, if the CCP is so evil, then mainland Chinese are the one that suffer the most since they are under the control of the CCP. then why don't we show more love towards mainland Chinese? Imagine if the Hongkongers really fight for democracy, and not because they want to feel superior to the mainlanders. imagine how much support they will get from mainland Chinese. As an ethnic Chinese and minority in my country, I have faced discrimination since I was little just because of my ethnicity and my ancestors came from China. There's no way I will support a group of people that discriminate people just because of their place of birth, just because they were born in mainland China. especially our ancestors including Hongkongers ancestors also came from mainland China.

Why "Beijing" is an antonym of "Democracy"? The West is not the only democracy mode we should follow, Freedom is also not unlimited. Democracy is mentioned everywhere in China: 24字的社会主义核心价值观:富强、民主、文明、和谐是国家层面的价值要求,自由、平等、公正、法治是社会层面的价值要求,爱国、敬业、诚信、友善是公民层面的价值要求。

From the perspective of a Malaysian citizen, who has free access to news and development in China, the Western world, and Hong Kong, I pitty KK's foolish believe in the greatness of Western style freedom and democracy. Has KK ever set foot in mainland China, and talk to the average Chinese person in the street there to understand what freedom and democracy they really needed and wanted? KK is indeed blinded to the many weaknesses of Western ideology, with its over jealosy and promotion of self-interest far above that of societal fairness, all in the name of freedom and democracy. The increasing failure of Western governments is a direct result of such expression, best represented by Oxfam's finding, "the wealth of the richest 1% equal to the other 99%". Western selfishness is never better highlighted by the Adam Smith Institute's head of research who said "What we should care about is the welfare of the poor, not the wealth of the rich", meaning one should create welfare for the poor from the remaining wealth of the poorer 99%, and let the richest 1% continue their wealth accumulation without concern! Is this freedom to amass more wealth by the wealthiest the freedom and system of governance we wanted? Is it not modern slavery in disguise? Western democracy insisted that ANYONE is qualified to govern, to treat the illness of their society, so long as he/she is supported by polular votes. I wonder how many Western person would use this same yardstick to select his medical doctor to treat his/her illness. Isn't it most critical that the medical doctor be learned and qualified through a series of verification tests? Why then is governing a country such a simplicity that anyone will do? Is this the democracy we wanted? So, KK, wake up from your dream. The Western idealogy of freedom and democracy is long due for major changes.
