When you said you were interviewing residents at the top of the video, I certainly wasn't expecting a Japanese immigrant, let alone such a positive and upbeat one! Such a amazing young man. I hope we can all absorb a little bit of his positivity. In a similar vein, I wasn't expecting for such a diverse group of residents there. Monster Building carries on it's legacy as a first stop into HK for immigrants it seems. The refurbed shopping small in the basement looked like it was shot in a entirely different part of Hong Kong. Looked right at home in somewhere like Central or Admiralty. Lastly, loved your message at the end of the video. Too many get caught up in their pictures for social media and forget the impact such internet virality can have on a place

Hong Kong is much more than all the usual glammed up photos and videos that the outsiders are used to see. Thank you Sam for covering the Monster building from the inside and clearing away any questions that we had about how people manage to live there. It took us by surprise to see the monster buliding having people from diverse backgrounds and totally unexpected to see a Japanese tenant and listen to his experiences. Even the mall underground was a surprise. As you rightly said that this building represents the soul of Hong Kong and hope it stays strong for many years to come.

Thanks as always Satish! We really tried to show the soul of the building here, rather than, as you pointed out, the glammed up image of Hong Kong. Thanks for the comment, and the support!

My main concern is the electrical wiring, its a fire hazzard and when it happens no one can escape due to its congestion.

There are definitely issues with the building, afraid we can’t speak about it living up to safety standards though as we aren’t sure ourselves. HK is generally pretty good when it comes to health and safety though

Fascinating place. When I see it from the outside it gives me some anxiety... I feel a fear that it might crumble or parts of it might not be stable. Once inside that feeling changes I suppose. It is tiny living as it exists all over the world, including urban areas of the US. Some make it feel as light and functional as possible, while others are a bit more ... casual. Thanks for giving us a look inside the Monster Building!

Hi Sam, well after 3 long years we have finally made it back to Hong Kong. We have only been here 2 full days and have already visited a few of the places we have had on a list after watching your videos. We have been to the monster building, with a stop at the Danish bakery on the way home. Breakfast today was in Happy Valley at Cheung Hing coffee shop. Last night we rode the star ferry across to TST to watch the symphony of lights from a junk boat in the harbour. We had a very quick stroll through Chungking Mansion but Siobhan was slightly overwhelmed by characters trying to sell us their wares. (Maybe better for the daylight hours 😂). Still have a list of other recommendations of yours like 'vinyl hero' and the Mahjong tile maker at Jordan for the next 8 days of our trip. Thanks again for your great videos. We really enjoy both Hong Kong Hoods and Sam eats it. Marcus and Siobhán.

Hi Marcus and Siobhan! It's great news that you've finally been able to return here, hope you're both having a great time! That's awesome that you've been working your way around some of our recommendations, hope you've enjoyed them all. I love the Danish Bakery for a not-so-healthy bready snack on the go, and Cheung Hing is legendary! Haha, yes Chungking Mansions can be slightly unsettling at night, maybe you guys will have better luck in the daytime as you say. Paul Au at Vinyl Hero is brilliant, he's so welcoming and always has a story to tell. Hopefully you find some good records there, too (although the entrance may be a little hard to find - it's hidden behind a subway entrance if I'm not mistaken). As far as Uncle King at Biu King Mahjong, he's had a little trouble with his landlord recently and I'm not sure if he's still in that spot right now. The best bet would be to reach out to him on his Facebook messenger. His kids speak English and will direct you accordingly! facebook.com/BiuKeeMahjong/

I guess I am fortunate to have lived in slightly larger apartments when I was growing up in Hong Kong. Not spacious by any stretch of the imagination, but the conditions in which I grew up weren't quite as cramped as they clearly are in that building. With the high prices of real estate in Hong Kong, part of me is glad I don't live there anymore, even though I miss it very much. Thanks for the video, Sam.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, although apartments are generally small compared to homes in other let’s of the world, some being built these days are tiny! The Monster building ones are a bit of an exception I think, as most older building I’ve come across tend to have more spacious units!

Great interviews and inside access to the residence, Sam. According to my Mom, the public housing boom in the early 60s was a crazy time, as thousands of locals and their families raced to join the queue to secure one of the prized, sought-after apartments. It was like winning the lottery for those who did.

It’s really hard to say without gaining access, but we think the second apartment we went into was subdivided in half, so double the size of that one.

Very cool!!! I guess many people are surprised or shocked at the small sizes of these apartments. But, with all the basic necessities all there, in a way, it is rather adequate. Besides, it looks peaceful -- no law and order problem? I can't help thinking of many big cities in the United States with more and more severe problems of street people, drug problems and the lack of reasonably priced dwellings. How is it that these people can live peacefully in this very crowded space but so many cities in the United Stated can't have similar inexpensive apartments for their people -- especially when you think of the words: government for the people, of the people, by the people. On second thought, I wonder if some city governments would get furiously criticized if they should offer such 'inhumane' apartments to the people. (???)

Thanks for the comment, yes- people here generally seem to have their basic needs yet, although it is very basic in some cases! As far as crime issues in the building, I’m not aware of any more than in any other part of Hong Kong. Thanks for watching

Actually I am not go to say the place is big. But he does has some space for a small bed, desk ect. Some of the apartmant in Hong Kong are called caged homes and the space is about the same size a sailor today gets on a ship.. Meaning a cot and a place to hang clothes for a few small items crammed in corners. The the tiny bathroom and kictchen is share with like 20 families. So this is nicer then some of the other places I have seen in Hong Kong.
