2:45 when winter makes your roots smaller..

Yer killin it mate! I built a round NFT like your last system and finally got plants in it yesterday, so far you have a video answering all of my questions. You have single handedly got me into hydroponics, and I am sure I'm not the only one, thanks and cheers.

1/ Hoocho - adding a float valve to your nutrient tank - excellent! 2/ Regarding your rain gutter grow system - seal your wicking cups that extend out of the bottom of your pots to the inside pot bottom & ensure that seal rises by 20 to 40mm, then drill some extra holes in the bottom of your pots. Why? When it rains, your pots will shed most of the rainwater from the holes in the bottom of your pots rather than all being directed into your rain gutter as this will dilute your nutrient mixture. I use large male & large female screwed PVC pieces screwed to the bottom of the pot with a piece of geo drain mat cable tied on the open end to stop the coco coir falling out instead of wicking cups. I know you like the roots to enter your rain gutter so you could swap the geo drain mat for a light weed mat. 3/ Your tomatoes are now putting on a lot of green growth & not enough fruit. Reduce your nitrogen and increase your potassium & phosphorus. The easy way to do this is to change your 50/50 ratio of calcium nitrate & Diamond Special T. Instead, run 40% Calcium Nitrate & 60% Diamond Special T. Continue to run the same EC/CF strengths you are now with the 40/60 mix. Always add in your Calcium Nitrate to your stock water first. 4/ Regrading your Dutch buckets. If you had added in the U pipes at the bottom of each bucket (as is done in the commercially sold Dutch buckets), every new watering would flush out the old nutrient sitting in the bottom of your buckets. As it is now, your new watering simply flows over the top of the old nutrient & back to the reservoir. 5/ You are having success with 2 waterings per day. Most growers will run 3 a day - around 7am, 1pm & 6pm/7pm. Plants drink during the day & eat at night :) Keep up the good work!

Today is August 5 2022. I have been watch you video for two years this weekend, we are going to make it happen. I will start proporgating Toms & Lettuce ready to put into either a Kratky or DWC at the start of spring. I combined your tote wicking system w/ this and the pot in pot concept and have really like the results. It uses less water, you get about the same results, and its flexible in that you can move your totes anywhere, depending on how you set them up. Great work on your videos!

Going well

Dig down the Kratky buckets in the soil and they will have a much more stable temperature both in the day heat and the colder nights. That is exactly how I plan to do this year when building my systems (took too long for my seeds to arrive so no growing this year except for some leafy greens). The big extra plus with burrowing the buckets is that it will look much more natural and you wont even see the buckets.

Personally I do three irrigations a day. According to several scientific articles, plants absorb the most water and nutrients between 6am and 12pm (in the morning). That's why I schedule my irrigation at 7am, then one at 11am and one at 7pm (one hour before the sun goes down). Irrigating at 4am is not necessarily useful, because the plants are still inactive. Concerning the tomato plants, it is necessary to remove the first leaves of the bottom to plant the tomatoes deeper in the soil (until the limit of the small white hairs on the main stem which will become roots), so the tomato plants will be stronger.

Wow. One of your best vids. I had just done a res change on my basement system this evening, so I was listening closely to your EC and PH levels because your salad greens make mine look puny! Edit. My numbers were spot on with yours, but I think my water flow may be too low after seeing yours. I am running 1GPH emitters with 1/4” line and the rails are, in inches, 60x4.5x1.5, with 7” spacing. Edit edit and yes that carrot looked like a live action shot...😂

You need a friend with a chromatograph. I like the work you have done with the horizontal pipes, and so do your plants. I'm working on control systems that can work in that harsh environment. Valves and pumps and sensors that can work with random bits of organic matter floating about are not the best environment for a reliable system, There's a lot of work that needs to be done to enable the typical urban gardener to be in a position of self-sufficiency. I see that as the major end-goal of this entire technology. This entire technology is in its infancy. Species selection, nutrient optimization, and growing environments/mechanisms have to be explored. This will be fun but I fear it has to be done quickly.

i seem to recall grandfather saying that the soil types used to grow carrots and spuds is very important for 'fruit' development, meaning shape i believe. 5 yr old me said why dont they grow them inside, he said because the soil they like and need isnt suited to that type of farming. ???. thinking out loud on youtube. cheers @Hoocho

Hoocho, You have really evolved, GREAT JOB. I have followed you for the last several months. I built a Dutch bucket system and am completely amazed at the production. Unfortunately most of the videos I viewed were several years ago and I didn't have a clear understanding of the ratio of how large of a holding tank I needed vs how many buckets (4 gallon) I prefer the Dutch Bucket for the larger vegetables and am now exploring the NFT system for the smaller leaf veg. plants. My tomatoes are already over 7' tall and I am having a really difficult time keeping my nutrients balanced as the vegetables are consuming most of the 27 gal. reservoir every 3 to 4 days? I have 14 buckets for each 27 gal. reservoir. The most difficult nutrient is the PH, our water is 7 so am using PH down just recently and I have had some problems with root rot but am adding Calcium nitrate.

Shade house is looking awesome Hoocho. I run my Dutch buckets and pipe systems 24/7. My thinking is that the plants have always got fresh oxygenated nutrient solution at an even temperature at all times. Hey whatever works, right?

I have had a closed loop hydroponic system run for up to two years without flushing the system. I have never noticed any problems with it.

ive never used peat pellet, in the video it seems it is wrapped by some sort of a film. will it break easily in a hydroponic system?

Absolutely love your channel. You have definitely inspired me to start a hydroponic project myself! I'm thinking of a slight variation on the Ollas projects you've done. What about combining a gravity fed reservoir with float valves inside of each of the Ollas? This eliminates pumps, noise, electricity, complexity, failure modes... I only see up sides. Any thoughts?

hay Hoocho has bunnings up your way stopped selling the pinegro 30l coco peat because in adelaide the wankers here have so not sure where i can get it or change two any ideas to help me i have bought some from a hydro shop close to me but its a blend of coco peat and clay balls and does not work as good as the pinegro 30l coco peat
