I have a helluva lot of respect for farriers. Just today it was a near thing between my cat and me who would go to the doctor (neither of us did, but we're now out of bactine and band-aids). If a horse suddenly decided it's not having it...

I had a similar problem with one of my horses a couple of years ago and we did the following: 1. trimming at least every 6 weeks or so; 2. making kind of shallow cuts across the crack (the crack did not go all the way to the hoof coronet); 3. cleaning the crack and squeezing a cotton pad soaked in copper sulfate solution into it; 4. no horse shoe (the horse was bare-footed most of his life anyway). The crack started growing down; it took a few months but the problem disappeared and this particular hoof was in a very good shape for the rest of horse's life (7 or 8 years, as far as I remember).

@carpathianken
@carpathianken 2 жыл бұрын
As well as what the other commenters said, the steel used on a horse like that is generally 20mm wide & 10mm thick, so trying to shape it accurately to a horses foot cold would be nearly impossible, but when the shoe is heated up in the gas or coal forge it makes the steel very malleable & soft & you can shape it easily to get the best fit. Shoe fit is very important & the horse has to live with the shoe that it gets for the next 6-8 weeks & if the shoe isn't fitting just right, it can cause lameness, arthritis from imbalances & inflammation
@emmawillard1832
@emmawillard1832 2 жыл бұрын
@@carpathianken Q: How many farriers have I seen in decades of keeping / owning horses which fit the hoof capsule to the shoe instead of fitting the shoe to the hoof capsule. A: Takes more than fingers and toes on both hands and both feet to count. Not in my stable! On my horses or any boarder's horse either!

Beautiful work. Grandpa used to do his horses. I was under 10 years so I only remember bits. Like the frog. What little kid isn't fascinated to find a frog under a horses foot. 😊 I was wondering, must a horse have all 4 feet in shoes? Or can it be only the damaged foot/feet?
@Cloudy4Days
@Cloudy4Days 2 жыл бұрын
My guess is generally, yes, but if there's a damaged hoof then they would make the rest as even or attempt to give a similar feeling to the horse in all four feet
@lizzieburgess674
@lizzieburgess674 Жыл бұрын
It's fairly common to shoe only the front two feet if the horse isn't worked too much on hard ground, or on horses or ponies which have naturally good hard feet, but you'd never shoe only one or three feet! They need to be balanced, and if one foot is 'bad' they will have a special shoe on the bad foot - and a normal shoe, of the same height, on the foot on the other side.

It is believed that the "crack" is a inherited gene that goes back to the time when horses were at the split hoof stage of development. X-Rays show that the hoof bone at the toe is indented.

Wow that is bad if it went all the way through. I have a problem with my 19hh belgian with those but nothing like that one. It usually 98% goes away when trim. One thing I have learned through the years is the Life Data Hoof Clay is EXCELLENT for the big guys. I keep this on the crack. It dries on - especially use it when gets wet out. I truly believe it has conditioned my belgian's feet / made hooves thicker somehow.
