What Robin Williams brings to Peter though isn't just his effervescence, it's his pathos and vulnerability. He's a scared, confused man just hoping to save his kids and that core of love and humanity is what makes Hook work for those of us that love it.

This is my favorite Robin WIlliams performance of all time. I LOVE this movie and I've loved him in it from the first. And btw, if you don't recognize her, the pirate Hook threw in the boo box is Glenn Close--she was on the set one day visiting and they gave her a bit part in the movie.

The kissing couple on the bridge, who are sprinkled with fairy dust as Tinkerbell carries Peter back to Neverland, was George Lucas and Carrie Fisher in a cameo. Fisher also served as an uncredited script doctor, mainly polishing Tinkerbell's comedic dialogue.

I have to agree. The dynamic between those two and how so thoroughly Hoffman sunk himself into the role is what had me rewatching it on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong, I've been a major fan of Robin Williams since his Mork & Mindy days and his breakout movie role in Popeye, but Hoskins and Hoffman owned this one.

My favorite story about these two is when they were reading lines together and they both had an "apostrophe" (hahaha) and said to each other...oh, these guys are gay! They were planning on playing it like to old queens until they talked to Spielberg and he was like, "uhhh, this is a kids movie, guys." Hoffman and Hoskins said ok and just played it like two really close friends who depend on each other.

Around the 6- and 8-minute marks, Granny Wendy is sharing/reading her novel, Wendy and Peter. When I saw this movie in its original release and saw that book, I got very emotional. My mom had given me a very similar copy - a 1st US edition - and I’d never seen such a special book, which I owned, in a movie! Told my mom how happy that made me and how much I appreciated her gift to me (we loved old children’s books). Very special.

I'm sure you've looked up the cast by now, but yes... Rufio - played by Dante Basco - voices Zuko on Avatar: The Last Airbender. The pirate that was put in the "boo" box was actually Glenn Close. Of course, Granny Wendy was played by Maggie Smith who is probably best known for Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, Reverend Mother in the Sister Act series, and (more currently) Violet in the revamped Downton Abbey. The "pirate with glasses" you mentioned from the cartoon version "Smee" was played by the late Bob Hoskins - known for his roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Unleshed with Jet Li, and the classic Super Mario Bros. (1993) Crazy stacked cast.

Hook is great, and if you know more about the original Peter Pan tale (which was a play, originally), the better it gets. A lot of quotes come the original play. There have been a lot of attempts at sequels to Peter Pan, and trying to recapture the magic of the or ginal J. M. Barrie play, but aside from Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates series, IMO this is the only one that gets it. Peter Pan is the child who never wants to grow up, because deep deep down he knows it's about responsibility and respectability and all sorts of things kids don't care about, and get in the way of adults showing their kids the affection they crave. Hook tries to remind every adult watching that time is short, you're only going to have your kids' unconditional love for a short time, and you've got to take advantage of that time. When they grow up, they're not going to remember the times you weren't there positively, only those times you were, and only those times you were there and attentive. The original play thought that the only way to end Peter Pan's story was "to die. To die would be a very grand adventure." But there is one other way, and that for him to grow up and become the kind of parent he wanted, so that he never would have had to become Peter Pan. It certainly took a lot for Peter Banning to reach that point, but by the end, he knows that dying wouldn't be anywhere near as grand an adventure as watching your own children grow up with love.

STAR WARS CAMEOS: There's a shot where Tinker is taking Peter back to Neverland and as they fly over the bridge near Big Ben, pixie dust falls and causes a kissing couple to lift into the air. The couple is none other than George Lucas (Director and creator of Star Wars) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia)! ANOTHER CAMEO: The bearded pirate who gets put in the boo box is actress Glenn Close!

Great reaction, you two. Like you mentioned, this movie definitely hits different when you are grown up with children of your own. Random fun fact: the pirate that gets sent to the "boo box" is played by none other than Glenn Close! Apparently she was visiting Robin on set and Spielberg asked her if she'd like to play one of the pirates. Of course, she said yes, and the rest is history!

Somehow I totally missed that you guys were expecting, so congratulations. The next 10 years of your life will be transformative. It's different for everyone, but the best estimate on when we lose our childhood hinges on when the weight of real responsibility falls upon us. When people are depending on us for their safety, their meals, their livelihood, that's when stuff gets real very quickly and we no longer have nearly as much time to have fun or play.

The music is iconic as well, John Williams never misses. The themes from Hook and Home Alone (1990) are reflected in the themes John Williams composed for Harry Potter. They all evoke wonder.

Lol, almost same story here. One of my favorites as a kid. Went back and forth on the father thing. When I hit puberty, as a teenager, I thought I never wanted to have kids. 😅 Now, since my ex gf and I broke up and my mother died in 2019 (I mean, already before that, but that's how things have been until today), I desperately wanna be a father. And it's just not happening (probably)...😔

Spielberg can’t do no wrong, there’s so many different genres he’s done. I grew up with this one as a young lad. They had a 20th anniversary reunion about 10 years ago. There are pics of all the lost boys together online reunited.

This may have already been mentioned, but the pirate that Hook berates into tears near the beginning is actually Glenn Close (you may remember her as Nova Prime in Guardians of the Galaxy, although she's been a world-renowned actor since at least the 80s)! Hilarious cameo.

This movie has this element of darkness and mystery that really knows how to draw you right in with real story telling. That part about Peter being a pirate with Granny Wendy really sold the aspect of what growing up does to people. They have lost their way and cannot relate anymore to the innocents they once had. Hook is such a classic movie and I really miss Robin Williams, he was perfectly cast as well as Dustin Hoffman. This was a staple of my childhood and I still enjoy watching it 30 years later.

I saw this at the cinema as a kid, such an awesome film and a great way to do a franchise film instead of todays remakes and reboots. Damn, I'm only watching the intro and hearing you're thoughts on what is going to happen - now I'm going to have to postpone work and give it my full attention! (I often rewatch at my desk while I work)

I know a lot of people say Jaws 2 is only good when compared to its successors, but it's honestly a good, entertaining B movie. While the first film was able to transcend a B movie, the second one is unapologetic about what it is and Roy Schieder is awesome (and more interesting) in the sequel.

Giving away my age a bit here, but I worked at a movie theater back in high school when this film came out. It was meant from day one to be a blockbuster family hit, and so they went _heavy_ on the promotional stuff: we had cardboard standees of various characters scattered around the lobby and even a 10 foot tall pirate ship off to one side. Additionally, we were encouraged as staff to wear our own pirate or lost boys costumes to work, which for most of us just meant jeans and an unbuttoned shirt over white tee. Well it must have been a slow news day, because the local paper (an affiliate of a major paper in a nearby city) sent over a reporter to get the scoop, and for some reason she decided to interview me about the hullabaloo. Two of my quotes (thankfully not by name) made it into the print article: "Well it definitely beats the polyester" when asked if I liked wearing my costume to work, and "We hope the customers will at least _feel_ like they got their money's worth" when asked about the lobby decorations. Literally the next week a memo came down from the main office (this was a *major* chain of theaters) reminding all employees that any press inquiries should be referred to the corporate PR department. 😄

There's a lot to love, but Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Hook is really underappreciated. I love how he looks down on him because he only knew Peter as a boy, to see him grow old makes him simultaneously sad (because he can't have the same revenge he wanted) and dismissive. It's the most layered portrayal of the Captain I've seen or read.
