About this video:
In this action packed video spanning 3 days, we tour my cut flower garden that is growing beautifully in my newly renovated raised bed garden. The Vego beds are looking gorgeous and productive! I try a DIY Weed Killer recipe from Becky ‪@AcreHomestead‬ and I show you the results. We do some edging and mulching. Also, I decided I wanted to change out a shrub as we were mulching which prompted an impromptu trip to the Nursery. Finally we add some ambiance and mood lighting to our garden with some Vego Solar Lights . Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b). #gardening #diy #makeover #vegogarden #sustainabilityyourway ‪@vego_garden‬

Hi Steph, Your gardens are beautiful! Love the vego garden and the new lights are great! re: vinegar Household vinegar is 5% acetic acid. Horticultural vinegar is available in 20% or 30% acidity. It tends to control weeds more effectively. Sometimes vinegar only kills the top of the weeds and not the roots. Please let us know how your vinegar spray worked in the long term.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 13 күн бұрын
Hi Laura! Thank you so much! I'll have to look for that vinegar and try it. I really would love to get down to the roots of those weeds on those gravel paths as there is just sand underneath and we have no plans to plant on them. I'll be sure to report back on the effectiveness of this after a few applications this season.

Lucky you! George is an excellent garden assistant. He might turn into a gardener after all. I saw that DIY weed killer recipe online also. Be careful. The salt can sterilize your soil, so that nothing will grow. In your gravel area, that probably won't matter.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 13 күн бұрын
Hi Jennifer! I agree, he might like it more than he shows lol. Yes, I don't mind if nothing grows in those paths as we don't plant to plant there. I would love it if the weeds got less over time in that gravel. I'll have to test this solution this season, and I'll report back on how it does over time.

The problem with that “weed killer” Is that it kills the top growth only. But doesn’t kill the roots. So many things will come right back from those roots.

Hi there! Mulch really makes things look so polished 💚The golden Jubilee hyssop is so pretty! I grew it from seed last season using winter sowing. It was smaller last year, and to be honest, I was surprised to see it return as that bed can be pretty moist. I have lost several plants that were planted there over the last several years. But it came back and looks great, I was happy about that. It also has a nice minty fragrance.
@karunald

@@HookedandRooted Yep - mine are in just that type of area. I started SO many Purple Coneflowers from seed (PowWow & fluffy types) and lost ever single one. ZERO coneflowers - even the 4 year olds died. Asked friends 'are your coneflowers up?' Yea - just me in that bed. I'll be watching your bed closely going forward and taking hints from it.

I just found the most gorgeous echinacea called Sunseaker Salmon Pink and I am in love! I even dug out a hosta in a prime sun spot to replace it with this plant because it is one you want front and center. I just found and planted "mill on the floss" David Austin Rose and I can't wait until it blooms. I had to laugh at all the echinacea you said you had because I have them all too! My fav pink yarrow is "Summer Pastel" the prettiest pink ever! Have a great day!

For the DIY weed Killer you will need to keep using the solution on the weeds as some of the weeds are a tad bit stubborn to kill. Hi Steph, just a thought for your gravel area that you have to spray for weeds continually. How about throwing down some meadow flower seeds on each side of your gravel area, leaving a small path free of any plants??? This would add pollinators and some bright colourful annuals and alot less need to spray weeds. You'd probably get a few packets of a mix with poppies, Nigella, cornflower, allysum, calendula and Californian poppies. I think it would look so pretty as an entrance to your vege garden, and you are forever looking for easy ways to reduce hard work especially in the heat. Hope this helps, Jo😊 from wet and cold New Zealand. Daddy's girl dahlia is a lotus type dahlia as it has an almost flat head and the petals are similar to a floating lotus....its beautiful and so understated.

Your garden is looking so good Steph. George is so sweet. This was a great video too. I saw hisop at The Home Depot yesterday but didn’t end up getting it due to the price. Hoping it’s still there when things go on clearance. Trying to add things slowly while watching the budget. The redbud is stunning. Thanks again for sharing!!

Try to find Yarrow 'Hella' something. Supposedly stout, bit shorter, no flop - soft soft yellow. Hard to find.

The edging project is looking beautiful. Do you ever plant in the areas you place the cardboard? I just wondered how you manage that. I so enjoy your videos and learn each time I watch!

Thank you so much! Yes, we do sometimes plant in the areas where we lay cardboard. If you want to plant a short time after placing it, you can just pull back the mulch, cut a hole and dig. And if you wait a few months, usually the next season, you can dig right into it as it has already started to break down. Hope this helps.

I love all your videos, but this one was very informative. The mulch looks great. And if you do not have a redbud, I would suggest one. I have a Forest pansy redbud that has purple leaves. And a rising sun redbud. The leaves on it go from yellow to orange to green and back again! Very fickle tree, but it’s very beautiful. Thanks for the video.

I have a Forest Pansy Redbud too. Just planted mine in October of last year. Love the heart shaped leaves, but I was hoping for a deep burgundy color that lasts through the summer. I have it in full sun in zone 7B and the leaves are more of a greenish burgundy color. Are you seeing the same coloration on your Forest Pansy’s leaves?

Hi there! Thank you so much. I have an Eastern Redbud and while I love it, I agree it's fickle. Each time we have lots of strong wind, it loses another limb 😞 that's partly the reason I have been hesitant to add a flame thrower or rising sun as beautiful as they are.

@@GoodGriefCB I agree! Mine had more of the true burgundy color in the spring. Glad to know there’s nothing wrong with mine and the greenish burgundy color in the summer is the norm. 🙂 I’ll have to look up the Oklahoma White.

Here we go with the 'natural' weed killer again. FYI -it might be fine for between pavers/sidewalks/gravel path - but it fails on anything else.... Maybe one for ANNUAL weeds but not Perennial. It'll look dead but VERY often comes back. But Most of all - Salt stays in the soil. Vinegar IMO is also more harmful than Glyphosate that does NOT go into the soil. And Becky is a newbie. I can't find Black Lace anywhere.

Hello, I accidentally called it natural, but corrected myself in the video. Its a DIY weed killer. I only plan on using it on those gravel paths that we have no plans of planting into. As for the black lace elderberry, I've had great luck ordering plants on Home Depot. com. You could try looking there? Hope this helps. 🌱

@@HookedandRooted I've been going to HD twice a week. Hoping it shows up before hitting the fancy/pricy nurseries. Hmmm... HD online eh? Sorry about the 'weed killer' rant. I'm a big fan of properly using Glyphosate. So many are in the 'Round up is going to kill us & the animals for decades if we use it' camp - not even knowing Roundup is a company and one can't even get Roundup w/Glyphosate in the US anymore. Just lots of myths. It's what stewards/forestry people use to restore habitat. So many letting invasives go - into forests etc vs. killing things like Goutweed, and other tough infestations. Drives me damn cray.
