About this video:
Here is my guide on how to grow foxgloves. What has worked for me and which methods I've used to grow foxgloves. These gorgeous flowers make such a statement in the garden. Whether you have a cottage garden, or a formal garden, these flowers deserve a spot to shine. Foxgloves are hardy in zones 4-9.
In its first year, the plant simply forms a rosette and foliage; in the second year, the plant grows a 3 to 5 feet spike covered in 20 to 80 small downward-facing, tubular flowers in purple, pink, or white.
Each flower tube has a small lip on which bumblebees can land to access the nectar at the base of the tube. Hummingbirds may also visit the flowers.

I share your love of foxgloves -- they are flowers worthy of a fairy book. Your combination with roses is gorgeous. I had good luck with my winter sowing of them last year so hoping that those will flower this year. I am also hoping that those that were in flower last year will have re-seeded themselves. I removed the main spikes when they started to fade and got a decent amount of side shoots although, of course, they aren't as tall as the initial spikes. Yes, growing from seeds is miraculous and so rewarding!

Last year I bought a compost bag, where I put this compost I got a lot of wild flowers and one of them was a beautiful cream /peach floxglove with brown spots, it grew up about 5.5 feet and flower, I collect a lot of seeds but I drop a lot more :) most of these seeds are plants this year, the "mother " plant never die , still there and growing back, not sure what I HAVE BUT I AM VERY HAPPY , cant wait to see what colors I get this year or if they stay the same will be nice too.

I love foxgloves! This is the first year I have tried winter sowing. It's working! My 5yr old granddaughter help plant the empty water jugs she saved and brought along. So exciting for me to check them and send her updates! Thank you for the great info Steph!

What a fabulous and colorful garden you have. Your neighbors must enjoy your flowers. I love fox gloves and have always just cut the seed stem and placed it in the garden. However I can see that I could get far more results with your method and I will be doing that. Would you be kind enough to give your seed sources for the peachy apricot foxgloves? Dropping dirt is just part of the process... the rug in my workroom could grow sprouts if I spill water! You're inspiring me to get some foxglove seeds and sow them tomorrow. The ones in your front garden were breathtaking! Love your tips.

My favorite flower and I have very poor luck with them. I have grown them in full sun , part sun and part shade because everyone seems to have a different opinion. Yours are always beautiful.

Hi Steph, I am trying to grow for the first time foxgloves .I purchased a reduced White Foxglove, which I left in its pot ,which self seeded .I gathered the plants that had germinated around it & have processed them into a larger pot & now I'm getting ready to put them into the ground location you've suggested .Will let you know what results ,colour etc that I obtain. Another great and comprehensive video, I'm just disappointed that I didn't start my foxglove when you demonstrated how to start them last summer...surely I must have got distracted. Please remind us all again when to start them outside late this summer and I promise you that I will immediately run out and get them going!!! And yes, I'm trying to start them in my basement but with much less luck than I would have had if I had started them outdoors! Keep up the great work!

This was very informative. I loved when you discovered you had some germination in your winter sowing. Just yesterday i looked at my eintet sowing and I got so excited I had germination also. Now if I can just not kill them before I can get them planted out. I am in Indiana and we have had such strange weather, it has been real warm then drops off cold.

So enjoyed this Stef. I can start them in late summer/early fall with no heat mat or grow lights… ?awesome!!! I’m going to do that this year. I am in love with the apricot variety you grow.😍 Lots of great tips.

Thank you! Yes, that's right no grow lights needed. I started those from the seeds I collected in summer as an experiment. However, you could start them earlier outside say by end of April beginning of May, and then plant them out by end of summer beginning of fall so they can establish in the ground before your first frost. Hope this helps! 🌱

Hi…loved your garden tours - and I loved this video on foxgloves. Love them. I bought some online - they are just small plants right now. I’d love to try some of your methods (love the winter sowing idea). Question - I don’t have any pets but my daughter has a golden retriever who is a little nosy in the garden sometimes. They only come here once a week mostly. Where do you think would be a safer place for foxgloves? Could I put them in containers? This way I’d be able to make sure the dog wouldn’t get into them! Let me know. Thx

Thanks for demonstrating how to separate the seedlings. I was wondering how I was going to separate the foxglove I am winter sowing. I also didn’t know lettuces like arugula can be winter sown. Hi Steph! Super informative info, thank you! I am indoor seeding for the first time this year. I broke my leg so missed out on winter sowing unfortunately. I noticed some of mine sprouted quickly but have become leggy and I assume weak…not sure what to do about that or if I can reverse it since it’s early on. Any advice? Also, I started Dalmatian Foxgoves, too, which I’m very excited about and don’t want to mess up. I had them under a dome and lifted the dome a few days ago because I saw sprouts. I then took the dome off but they are under grow lights. I can’t remember if they’re on top of a heat mat too. My question is, 1) am I properly handling them so far, and 2) how many hours should ny lights be on seedlings each day? Constant? Thanks Steph!

I did some winter sowing and noticed white mold on top today :( They are in an unheated garage greenhouse) So I opened up the zippered door and let air in....maybe I should have put them outside. My garage door has big windows and a lot of light filters through.

My mom and I just did our first winter sowing this year. I’m so excited about it! We are already seeing seedlings 🌱 . If we winter sow foxgloves now, they won’t come up this year, right? They will come up next year?

Hi Robyn, Foxgloves do really well with winter sowing! yes, that is correct you will see blooms next season. Unless they are first year blooming variety, other wise year 2 for blooms 🌱

My fox glove has been growing back very sparse and not full at all 😢 I’ve fertilized and kept watered but not soaked and they get about 6 hours of sun every day

Perfect timing….I have some that reseeded themselves,when it warms up I will move them around! Glad I didn’t dig them up because I wasn’t sure they weren’t weeds😳 the mother plant looks dead,is that normal ?

Yes, that is normal. You can leave the mother plant for a bit longer see if it sends up any shoots, but if its past year 2, and has already bloomed it might not. Thanks for watching! 🌱

I live in Central Texas, 8b or maybe 9a now. I'm unsure where the line is in my area since they updated the zones. I know they are an early spring plant. We warm up pretty quickly. We've already had 80+ degree days. Do you think I can grow foxgloves?

Hi Diane! Foxgloves are hardy in zones 4-9. While I've read they don't like humidity, we can get pretty humid here and they do well. Perhaps growing them somewhere with morning sun, and afternoon shade would help? Wow already 80 degrees! That's hot.

Hi Cary, The seed packet I grew was apricot beauty, it happened to come up all these different colors. So I labeled the seeds the same when I collected them.

Hi there, the seeds are usually viable for up to 2 years. The fresher the seed, the easier they germinate. In general foxgloves germinate really easily and you can just let them dry out on the plant and drop their seed, and you will have tons of seedlings.

They don't come back for me, but they self seed a bunch! So there is always more seedings coming up in the following years.
