So glad to make this Modern Hoop Earrings tutorial for the week. Almost everyone that I know of has worn hoop earrings before. Here it is, a tutorial for basic hoops and then a super fun modern chic tassel earrings transformed from the hoops.
Hope you enjoy this :)
Alright, let’s get started!
****************************************************************************
Material I used:
1. 20g round brass wire - cut into 10cm. (for basic hoops)
2. 20g round brass wire - cut into 60mm. (for tassel earrings)
Find Raw brass wire here: amzn.to/3NBdYEX
(You could use copper, aluminum, or gold-filled wires if you like, you could also use artistic wire for practice purposes, don't recommend it for wearing though. )
Tools:
1. Side cutter/Flush cutter- Find similar here: amzn.to/3MoVG9E
2. Flat nose pliers- Find similar here: amzn.to/3yU52X9
3. Round nose pliers- Find similar here: amzn.to/3MiJ044
4. Rhine nose pliers- Find similar here: amzn.to/3MfTHo7
5. Ring mandrel- Find similar here: amzn.to/3wpketx
6. Triangle file- Find similar here: amzn.to/3Lv11L4
7. Round rod file- Find similar here: amzn.to/3wsmnEK
8. Metal Block- Find similar here: amzn.to/3lik8gJ
9. Nylon Hammer- Find similar here: amzn.to/3PfLkuq

Oh my gosh, Maggie. I am in love with these earrings. I saw a pair kind of like these but yours are way better. I LOVE THEM!! Thank you so much for sharing. Wonderful tutorial. I tried to make the hoop earrings myself. I can't get them to work. I used sterling silver and also gold filled 20 gauge half hard round wire. Mine won't stay in a round shape or close. They are oval. I've hammered and hammered and reshaped. They spring back into ovals. I can do them in copper but that's not what I want. I bought some that are 21 gauge but for me that's too light. I am not good at making these at all. LOL.

I’m so glad you like them J! 20g half hard for both materials should work. All wires have their own temperament, and we need to work according to that. I’m just thinking, from what you described, maybe there’s something you can make changes. 1. When work with half hard wires, refrain from over straightening wires before creating any shape. As you straighten them, they developed more hardness. That means it is going to be harder to forming a shape. 2. The oval shape sounds like there might be some unevenness when hammering. The part that hammered the most would be more curvy, and the part that less would be more flat. When reshaping, try skipping the curvy part, and only shape parts that are flatter. I hope these make sense, let me know if you ever tried making these changes :)

@@user-lr5cx1ni4r Pleasure :) The wire would get harder to be reshaped after it has been worked on a lot. Don't give up, you could try making a fresh pair later. (only when you're rested from making it :)) Try to tweak the process and details here and there, as everyone works differently. I'm sure it'd work later when you found the X factor.

Wow! Thank you so much for the close-up video. I was having such a hard time with the tail sitting correctly inside the loop. Your video makes it look so easy now and I can't wait to give it a try again.

I have just stumbled on your videos and I am so thrilled!! Your videos are amazing!!! So detailed and I love how calming they are❣️❣️. I look very forward to watching all of them! I do have a question about wire, I am always looking for nickel free pieces that go through the ear as so many people are bothered by nickel and I wondered if you could suggest wire that would be in gold and silver. Also because I am learning I want to use wire that is not high end and not sterling silver as I don't like the tarnishing properties. Many thanks!!! Karen

Hi Karen, thanks so much for your compliments! :) As much as we like to have an all in one perfect wire for ear wires, they comes in different qualities and price range. So I’ll suggest using economics wire like the artistic wires for practicing (They don’t tarnish, but I don’t recommend it for wearing as ear wires.) and go for a more premium wire like gold, 14k gold-filled, gold plated wires when you’re ready. Aluminium might be another metal that you might like to look into. It doesn’t tarnish but the tone might get dull over time too. Premium metal like gold, gold-filled are expansive for a reason, for their non tarnishing, long lasting and safe for wearing properties. And that itself is what makes them pricy 😉 Hope this help.

@@MaggieCSAtelier thank you very very much for taking the time to answer me Maggie!! I love the classic simplicity of your designs and also the fact that the ear wire is part of the design instead of adding a fish hook or something as I currently do. I find it confusing when I look at the wire choices, half hard.... Etc. Maybe a wire tutorial in your future LOL......I understand the gold (color) and what to look for, thank you for that but I am still unclear what to buy for silver color as 2/3 of the earrings I make are silver color based. I Sooooo appreciate your help. Have a lovely day and again thank you for your time!!!!!❤️

And thank you Karen. :) I’ll definitely make a video on wire in the future. For ear wires I’ll suggest using half hard. Just like gold, likewise for silver, it comes with different quality and price. Silver will always tarnish, but you can opt for Argentium silver, which is more tarnish resistant. (Sometimes also called organic silver) Other option would be chromium plated or white gold plated. (May fade over time too) You could also try to find find if any white gold wire suppliers near you or online. White gold would be the best in terms of non tarnish metal in silver tone but of course, it comes with a premium price too. :D

@@MaggieCSAtelier Hi Maggie, may I ask why artistic wire isn’t suitable to make earwires? I am a new fan as well, by the way. Currently watching back all your amazing videos. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise 🙏🏻❤️

@@kathyzaagman6971 Hi Kathy, mainly for the precautions against allergies that the wearer could have had. As ear wires are in close contact with the skin, unlike rings, necklaces, and bracelets. It's also hard to find out what is in each manufacturer's coating or whether they contain lead or anything else that might irritate the skin on the coating.
