Guys, lead is expensive. Instead, go get a bag of QUIKCRETE and pour it into molds of 2 litre drink bottles. Use some wire to make a tie-off through the opening. cut the bottle and pull out the 'crete weight and reuse. ITS CHEAP !!! and it works great. If you lose the weight, it dont hurt so bad in the wallet.
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 Жыл бұрын
I like the concept and have some weights similar, but I like smaller weights on the head line. I'm actually planning on doing some videos on making concrete weights similar to that, but don't want to spoil the surprise. I'm gonna be making some variations of your idea, but may include yours. On a head line I'd use something more similar to the size of a 20 oz, 1 liter, or one of those big water bottles, but depends on the current in the area which I'd use. We got so much current right now a smaller weight is plenty to keep the head line tight !!

A question if the meshes start out a little off each one progressively larger but the later rows are the same size meshes and I'm going to discard the first couple of rows will it still come out ok in the end? For some reason, the first row keeps ending up slightly off (like being done with my block/card/board at an angle) and I have t figured out how it happens. The first knot is not the same length as the last one in the row and if I line them up they seem to be changing size progressively along the entire row. Should I hold the card at a slight angle to correct the problem?

3/8 poly braid or bigger depending on mount of current you fish. I use papermill rope because I can get it free at times It's probably 1/2 in. If Nylon, at least 1/4" rope. Mule rope will work as well if you can find it. Old times used to use wire on tail lines, lol. Headlines I want something that won't burn hands. Poly braid is best because it's bouyant. Easier to catch with drag. Never buy twisted rope

Can u give a beginner some advice on 1. very weed filled lakes and 2. rivers that are shallow with big rocks. Im curious if i should not bother with em. 2. The steel head go up there this time of year but I'm unsure what kind of net and if i even can, I'm going to look next week.
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 3 ай бұрын
I doubt it's legal at all. Rocky bottoms are not good for nets. They will wear the twine off the hoops. As far as grassy lakes, if they have catfish in them, I'd try to get out past the grass if legal, and possibly use wire nets if legal. Many states are not legal, so definitely check. Private lakes or ponds may be an option in some states

@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 I'm an ojibwe Indian in northwest Ontario, Canada, and it's on a reserve so we have special privileges. So would u recommend maybe trying to find the deepest point type thing???? A few other band members do it. I'm just unsure of where exactly I'm gonna place it and / or wat kind of net I should b using. I'll look at getting a wire net then. The bottom is up here. A lot of the lakes have super bad long weeds , but there are thousands of lakes within hrs of me. I'll do more research and ensure I stay within the treaty zone. So it would be a wire hoop net? Or is this way too vague for you to comment on? My apologies. l thank you for responding.

@kooskoos8181 no problems. Hope I can help. Very interesting setting, we're used to muddy, sand, or clay bottoms. Never dealt with rock or weeds. First question that far North is what type fish you have. I'm gonna assume Catfish are nonexistent there. Our main target are catfish or Buffalo. That said with hoop nets we primarily want current. We fish normally the edges of that current kinda between heavy and slack in the medium current. Normally that's where a lot of fish swim. It's mainly finding their trails, just like game trails. Wire nets would only catch catfish mostly. Our Buffalo or carp are also targets for hoop net fishermen
@kooskoos8181
@kooskoos8181 3 ай бұрын
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 Hmmm, ok. Yes, catfish are non-existent. So this particular river runs off Lake Superior. So there are rainbow trout/ steel head, pickeral/walleye, and salmon in an area close by, etc. I just got into hunting for the last few years and have gotten my first moose, etc. It's time to get back to my roots and minimize eating processed garbage so now I'm trying to get better at fishing. Unfortunately, we're plagued with drug and alcohol addiction in the area, so I like to keep away from most people to avoid the BS. So, I find myself on youtube trying to figure out my approach here. Don't get me wrong there are areas with muddy bottoms it's just this one river that I am perplexed how people have done this and the guy who is the most experienced is out of province and didn't seem to want to give any advice.

@kooskoos8181 most places I know of in the US all of those type fish would be protected and not legal to harvest in nets of any type. However, I caught a 8 or 10 lb walleye last year and Wildlife and fisheries told me I could have kept it, because of no regulations on walleye in Louisiana. They normally aren't this far south. I was fascinated with History growing up and studied a lot of American Indian History, being I had Ancestry also, so I'm familiar with Reservation Law being different. I'm also not even sure what any Laws are in your area. If Legal, For sure Hoop nets will catch some type fish in current I'd think. That said, depending on what type fish and how they react in water you have to netting. Like if really clear water they may not go in at all. We got lot of muddy water down here. I'd hate seeing you waste money on anything that won't work. That said if you do figure out anything, be sure to pass it on down to your younger generations as we're doing. Sorry I can't be of more help, maybe you can pick up something out of our videos. Congrats on the Moose, that's a dream hunt for us, that may never happen. It's getting more expensive by the day, so who knows. Good Luck!!

How are you finding those drop offs. Depth finder?
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 Жыл бұрын
You can, and livescope really shows them and fish running the edges of the dropoffs, but I use that drag. Just years of experience and knowing the river in that area. We look it over when it's at pool stage a lot too. However I can feel out places by dropping a window weight in or my drag and bumping it off the bottom. A good nylon rope helps with this because it's really sensitive to touch. You'll feel any trash, sand, mud, and drop offs. I like harder bottoms, because that tells you plenty of current hits that area also !!!

@godscountryhuntingfishing1638

Running a buoy is 10 times easier, but 100 times more likely to get your nets stolen or run by other fishermen. I can't count the number of people that didn't listen on that and had nets stolen first or second run. This stuff is expensive, so protect it!!

@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 5 ай бұрын
@Onlyfowlintentions I used to sell catfish years ago but don't now. Just done this stuff my whole life and now share the little I know with you guys. I use Nylon drag ropes. You can actually feel when you hit the rope. With a good drag you can feel rocks, sand, mud, wood and rope. After a little experience, you know exactly what that drag or drag rope hits. It's almost like sticking a stick under water and feeling around. We use 50 foot head lines so it's easy to hit, and use land marks. Like I'll drop the net mouth at a certain tree or stump. Then each time drag just behind that tree. I've went over this some, but maybe I'll go over in more detail in upcoming video

@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 what hoop nets do you like. Size and company that sells them.
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638
@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 5 ай бұрын
@Onlyfowlintentions that totally depends on amount of current and what species fish I'm after. If I had to pick one net, it would be a 42in diameter 2in mesh net. You'll see in our other videos though, we fish a variety. Id highly recommend watching several before buying anything. Nets and More sells nets, as well as Memphis net and twine, but they are not equal to all nets. Individual Net makers make some of the best nets there are. Not sure your location. Also check local laws. Every state is different. You can go to our main page, click on play list and go to the net fishing play list. That should help
