In this video, I compare my different hooped bivi bags. One thing they all have in common is, they are tiny tents. Some say it’s like sleeping in a coffin. 😂 but they are great for stealth camping and wild camping when you need to low profile. Each bivi varies in price, materials and performance. I go bivi camping quite a bit. I like the simplicity of it, but it's definitely not for everyone. I keep my sleeping pad and bag inside the bivi as a one piece bed roll I live just outside Manchester so it's pretty easy to nip up to the lake district. Go up in the afternoon / evening when all the day trippers are heading south. Dinner in the pub. Leave the car in the pub car park and head up the hill as it's getting dark. Roll the bivi out and get some kip. Wake up in a room with a view that's cost nothing. Finish the summit or a horseshoe round. Back down to the pub for a fry up. Head back home when all the day-trippers are still heading north.

How do you manage to change or do anything when it's raining with a bivy bag? I have not seen how people deal with rain when you are soaked and don't have much space to start with in a bivy bag do you have any tips on how to deal with rain when having a bivy bag? thanks

@@showstimer I pack a light weight A frame Tarp and use my Treking poles, couple of minutes to set up including the Bivi. Paid about £10 for the tarp and £80 for a Trekmate Squall bivi. I only use the tarp if there is a chance of rain. I don’t “camp” in the traditional sense, I take high energy cold foods, no stove and a 750ml flask which I fill when I pass through civilisation. If I’m out for a week or more every 3/4 days I pitch on a campsite for a night to shower, wash and dry kit and stock up if required, otherwise it’s a wet wipe shower 😬

It's interesting that all of your bivies are hooped - after trying some non-hooped bivies I'm definitely a hooped bivy convert. I absolutely love bivying but I do find the non hooped bivies you can't zip up quite exposed whereas zipping up a hooped bivy for whatever reason gives me some peace of mind. Perosnally have the OR Alpine and I think it's brilliant. Very breathable, you can stargaze, much more discrete than a tent, so much easier to pitch / take down than a tent and a much stronger sense of being out there with nature. The thing I particularly love about the breathable hooped bivies is that you aren't necessarily stuffed if it's raining. Not ideal as you say, but I've had my OR Alpine in overnight drizzle and I was dry when I woke up (minimal condensation). Please make some more bivy videos - definitely my favourite content!

I have 2 hooped Bivi's, Dutch Army and a Vaude 1p. ( plus an Ionosphere ) Love them both but the smaller Vaude doesn't breathe like the Dutch (got a bit damp last weekend inside and out ).I'm now pondering getting the Stratosphere or Elan.. There is something hard to explain about enjoying getting into a bivi as opposed to a tent.. I liken it to den building when I was a kid and hiding ! Great video again Paul. 👍

I have the outdoor research one. I sewed additional points so that had 3 stake points at the bottom and 2 on the top. I tend to roll about a lot while sleeping and more fastening points keeps the bivy in place.

I've the older style Rab RR. If you're 6ft or under you can put your emptied pack at the foot end and still have room to sleep. Helps hold up the bivvies fabric and prevents pools of water forming towards the foot end after rain. I modded a small Alpkit tarp to give a dry cooking area ( partenered with a single trekking pole) as an optional extra. It just kind of fits onto the bivi entrance.

Yeah if you're a trekking pole user a tarp makes a difference to add vestibule type spaces to a bivvy or any of the "coffin" like tents.

Yeah I've the old one where the pole goes inside the bivvy. It's a great shelter but so bloody awkward to install and secure the pole.

Elan best by far. Cheap, light enough and easy to put up. Crazy money the other 2. You are never going on a months hike in these, more so bikepacking or overnighters so spending £350 on a bivvy seems bonkers to me. Great insight to the differences though. I always used to think ‘why would anyone get a bivvy when you can have a tent for the same weight and more space’ but a bivvy is not about space in anyway. It’s solely to be as hidden as possible and small so can literally pitch in a 60cm wide gap and not high. Super quick to pack away and go. Great I find for 2/3 day hikes or bikepacking in summer

I have the Alpkit Elan....love it! It's very marmite though.... you're either going to love it or hate it....there isn't much room between your face and the top of the bivi BUT when your eyes are shut it could be miles 🤷🏽‍♂️ I like bivi camping but I don't like the bugs so I bought the Elan because of its bug net....now I get the best of both worlds 👍

Good comparison video thanks for doing it. I've had an eVent Showerspass bike jacket and a OMM eVent smock, agree very breathable but their issue was delaminating, didn't survive the wear'n'tear. Fully accept bivvys have a useful role as you stated (stealth or when the pitching site is too small) but every time I've looked I've concluded stick with my Tarptent Notch, I can make it lower profile and narrower if required. With age and accident related injuries I'm always with trekking poles now so the actual shelter weight is less/similar to a bivvy with more space.

YES! What's happened to eVent? I have two jackets made of eVent and they have massively outperformed every other waterproof/breathable material, including the best GoreTex has to offer. In fact, every GoreTex item I've ever owned delaminated and had to be binned. My oldest eVent jacket is my daily 'cycle-commute to work' apparel and performs as flawlessly as the day i bought it... in 2004! That's almost TWENTY YEARS of using the same jacket week in and week out for work. It has no delamination, damage or function deterioration of any kind. Nothing else even comes close. Bring back eVent!

i as the alpkit and i used it 7 weeks ago it rained for over 7 hours n had 30 to 40 mph winds it as very bad condensation

I have both the RAB Ridge Ridge and the Snugpak Stratosphere. Both are brilliant bits of kit for different purposes. If you like to practice in "stealth" camping, the stratosphere is much better at being low profile in both shape and colour, not to mention its far cheaper than the Rab RR , but if you want warmth and more space, the Rab RR is far better suited to the cold. But it will cost more than tents that can to the same with more space.

Thank you for this review, Paul! I am still struggling with bivvies and continue to try to talk myself into getting my hands on one, although I do not exactly have the right use case... For what I do, I am better off with my Lanshan 2, as I haven't looked into stealth camping yet. Still an intriguing idea of a shelter, wait and see...

I have an Elan and it's the poles that really add to the weight. They are quite a pain to get them to fit too. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. But I really like that they give privacy. I feel dead exposed in a normal bivvy. I really like the ventilation feature that works even when it's raining. I love the long zip, which means I can get into my sleeping bag easily. I love the insect screen that means I can still gaze out at the stars, yet not get quite so cold. But hooped bivvies are like coffins when closed, and the weight of the Elan is not dis-similar to my Soloist (without the footprint), so I just keep the Elan for dry weather, stealth camps. Keep going Paul!

Ugghhhhhh!! To me, not even near the comfort, function and enjoyability as a regular 1-2 person shelter. Going into the wilderness, for me, is for the enjoyment and recreation. Thanks all the same, Paul.

Great vid Paul.. I have the Alpkit Elan, have used it a few times. It is lower than the snug pak so you just need to be aware of how high your air mattress is, as that plus any pillow soon has you very close to the 'roof'. That said, once you dial it in it's a great stealth camp option. OR as I tend to do.. use an ex-army foam mat and then you have plenty of room. I also prefer to use synthetic sleeping bags incase of condensation..

I’ll throw another in the mix here, as I’ve just brought myself a new (deluxe) bivvy! I went for the Mountain Warehouse Backpacker-1 ‘Lightweight’.. I did my first wild camp in this new shelter last week. So much room inside, at 235-97-74cm, I could keep my 40L pack down by my feet, with my cooking gear and bag of spare cloths and a few other bits next to me, and still have room to get changed inside it! It’s also silver foil lined on the single-skin inner, which makes it feel very light and airy and gives the impression it’s bigger inside than it actually is, it also has a full length zip down the side making it a doodle to get in/out of! Very discrete colour too, when you get out and look at it you think how can there be that much room inside..🤷🏻‍♂️ it really is a tardis!! Plus it only weighs 1035g (without pegs) tucked away in its storage bag! But the best thing about it was the price, all yours for just £55 brand new with tags.. it says the RRP on it is £89. 👍🏻

Can second the backpacker one man. Advertised as more of a coffin tent than a bivi, but with enough headspace that you can just about sit up to get changed in, fit a small pack down by your feet as well as a second beside your head, and with a generous amount of tie down points. The eyelets for the tiedown points of the vent also fit my foldable solar panel just perfectly, but i will say condensation is certainly an issue.

Hi Paul I recently bought the terra nova Jupiter £220 I like the low profile and how the rain shield comes out the front with the guides. I have Spent a night in it and there was a little condensation but was a muggier night than most nights. Great bit of kit for backup or just a quick one night no thrills pitch.

I use an OR helium bivy ...its super light packs small and in use with my sleeping pad and 40 degree quilt makes for a small just over 3 pound entire sleep/shelter system in the summer ....its nice taking a 40 liter bag for multi day trips this way where i used to take a 70 liter ...

I had an OR one, and still have a mesh bivy made by Marmot. The first I sold because I got to a point where I just didn't need it, the second needs a tarp if you think it might rain. That said, for me, the bivy is much more for an emergency shelter if you're day hiking, or for a trip where you may not be able to find enough room to setup a tent. Or more importantly, you're trying to save packing space for a kayak trip. I've been thinking about getting another OR bivy, so appreciate the overview of this one!

There is another reason to use a conventional bivy, if you camp in Germany. If you get caught there wildcamping in a tent, you will not only be sent away, but also charged. Using a bivy for one night in combination with the right explanation is a grey zone there and will usually not cause further difficulties. I am not quite sure, but I think there are other european countries with similar conditions.

They have their place. but I mostly agree. I'm young and daft, but not that daft 🤣. When you think that tents in the style of an akto are only marginally heavier, it often doesn't make sense to suffer.

@@northernswedenstories1028 I have an Akto it's 1.6kg my bivy is .5 kg which unless my arithmetic is amis means my Akto is 1.1 kg heavier and a whole lot bigger to pack, perhaps you left out the fly the poles and the pegs 😁

@@davidhale1568 depends on the bivy doesn't it. The ones Paul has on show here are closer to a kilo,.hence my comment. A traditional bare bones bivy bag can be 250g if you want, but it's a different ball game

I have the OEX salamander and apart from a little condensation on one night out of 3 it’s a great bivi I did use mine with a tarp for an admin area.

I use the newer version of the RR, really like it. Sometimes use it with a DD magic carpet tarp for an extra sheltered area.

The OR AscentShell fabric is amazing. It's so breathable that when I use my OR Stargazer I just roll it up from the wide end, and squeeze the air out through the fabric. It's kind of amazing -- and it's still perfectly waterproof; I've had it out a few nights of solid rain with nary a leak. I prefer to use a tarp when I'm using a bivy also, so that I have a place to hang out for things like eating when I'm not sleeping.

Another great video Paul. Myself personally am not a fan of bivys, i never understood them. Condensation magnets, just as expensive if not more expensive than a tent even though are made of less materials. Not really that much lighter either. If going stealth I prefer something which is more of a cross between a tent and a bivy like the Ionosphere. More space and more versatile and significantly less money.

If venturing into areas that might be problematic as regarding being able to erect a tent I carry a bivy and a tent fly sheet and use my discretion as to putting the tent fly up over the bivy also handy if raining, best of both worlds even works for official camp grounds

I've used a couple of bivi bags, both waterproof alone and one only water resistant on the top, waterproof bottom. The last one obviously needed a tarp in addition, but gave pretty good protection from mist and humid air that a small tarp or poncho wont protect from. Waterproof (and breathable) ones just gave too much condensation. Everything inside got damp after one rainy night. Hard to see a reason for one of the hooped waterproof bivies with the current selection of superlight tents - maybe except for price.

Still got a Phoenix Phoxhole ( and a Phalklander). Used it a lot in the 90:s. Remember a vinternight, snow and -21C° 😊 Cosy.

I use the Alpkit Hulka XL with a poncho The poncho covers my head so there is no need for a hooped bivi The Hulka is very large inside, and the poncho covers my kit I use a 80 lt bag liner and it covers my pack at night The weight is about 800g and the cost is low

Love my OR Stargazer bivvy. I do think though that it's good for 3 seasons as the dimensions are a little on the snug side for me when trying to loft a winter synthetic bag. The Elan is a Snugpak Stratosphere copy. Often on offer for £99 so worth looking out for

I’ve always liked the idea of a bivvi, with its drawbacks, which is why I’ve settled on a compact one man tent as the best solution for me, as opposed to a two man.

I would question why you would use a bivvy if you are not prepared to go out in the rain, you could just cowboy camp surely? I spent a 1/2 night in an OR Helium and could not settle in such a confined space, so it went back. Very nice kit, but not for me. Now if I have wanted to go fast and light I've used a tarp - and this I have happily used in heavy rain without getting wet from above or from condensation. Tarp, groundsheet, insect net and pegs all come to 700 g. Still hard to justify the inconvenience vs. a 1000 g tent, but it is both stealthy and safe in the rain. The only true advantages of a tarp in my experience are the packed size (impressively minute) and most importantly my connection to the environment.

Hi Paul, love your videos , I've recently upgraded my bivvy from the Dutch army hooped bivvy ,to my carinthia observer plus... STAGGERING build quality and performance .. I hummed and arred for over 2 years about getting this .... £ 700....😬 But .... It is in a league of it's own... ( always use a small tarp to enable dry entry and exit during rain . 🙂

I've used my Snugpak a few times over the course of the past 12 or so years. It was good in military applications and it's a nice survival piece to always have in your backpack when you're not expecting to stay out anywhere. However, not great for going camping.

Bought an Alpkit Hunka XL around xmas and it’s fantastic with the Silwing over, was great to have views but not have the weather come in. I think for me though I enjoy the process of pitching a tent and having some space to chill out in.

I've been asking around for tarp suggestions (in my case to extend a small vestibule on a small tent) and a clever chap pointed to a tarp-poncho, as you tend to use bivvys in better / warmer weather and a poncho is drier to keep rain off than waterproofs and becomes a tarp. I just ordered a tarp poncho, "cheap as chips" to give it a try. So a bivvy + poncho-tarp ?

I nearly sold my Rab Ridge Raider but there's just something about it I really like. I think I just love this simplicity and it's just big enough and roomy enough to nearly offer a "normal" tent experience. I always peg mine out though to get the foot end up.

I find the when you have your pad and bag in the Elan your head is touching the ceiling. Ok ish if a side sleeper but I don’t like it, end up using my Hunka XL. Like the look of the Ridge raider for head height.

Mountain Laurel Designs makes eVent bivies. I had one custom made, XL size, no tapering, very breathable. Just received a traditional swag from Australia. Very heavy for its size, pretty bomb proof, but not great in rain. That's where my bivy comes in, waterproof covering for the swag. I don't mind the limited room but having experienced the condensation and stuffiness of a small tent decided to save some money and go for the most breathable gear I could find.

Having only bikepacked rather than backpacked, trekking-pole tents are not much use to me, so there's more of a clear weight advantage over to these over free-standing tents. If the newer Rab bivvy had a side opening I'd be all over it for its height allowance and extra hoop at the foot, however as it is I don't fancy the feeling of being halfway down a gullet, so I'd go with the AscentShell and stuff a pannier down at the bottom.

I have an Australian canvas swag, no poles, no tie out points. Just an envelope. Also have a USMC bivvy bag, again it's just a bag. Most recent purchase is a Dutch army hooped bivvy. All different, all good for different conditions and depends on using a car or on foot.

I’ve used my Snugpak a few times - it is small (!) but I am getting used to it. Good for places where stealth or pegging out is a issue, such as beach camps. On my last beach camp I used my Nightcat which is bigger and lighter but pegging out on sand was a trauma.

I have both the Stratosphere and the Ionosphere, which is more bivvytent? I feel it brings the best of both, and ventilates very well.

Hi Paul . I'm.also a fan of ' event ' tho not the most durable . Rab had to stop using it after Gore insisted they use Goretex only , and I think Montane got the same . A few brands still use ' event ' , tho as ' event ' ownership has been sold umpteen times , there has been little spent on advancing the original material . Best regards .

FYI - The reason Rab don't use eVent materials anymore is because of Gortex. Gortex started not allowing companies to use them if they were using eVent, they basically bullied eVent into none existence... I worked with Gortex for over a decade, this is the story I was told. Not sure how true it is. On another note, Rabs latest ridge raider is actually meant to be more breathable than the version you have.

I've used a good few bivvys over the years, and I just don't enjoy them. For some reason, every now and again, I buy a new one because I want to try a bivvy again, but I still end up not enjoying the experience.😢 😢

Have you tried the aquaquest bivi it's awesome and it has a 10.000 hydrostatic head 👍

I've got the new version of the Rab and I'm very happy with it. Other tents are OEX Jackal Ii and Black Diamond Mission 3P for winter camping. If I could I'd buy a new tent every week! 😁

I totally get why you want more tents….we have tentitis 😂 I have an 8 person hot tent, a Sierra designs meteor and now I’d love a rab ridge raider or the OR one in this vid.

Have you ever come across the Coleman Kraz X1 tent? Not much bigger than a bivi bag, but you can sit up in it and store your gear in a sort of porch, packs very small and light. Not really my cup of tea anymore as I am more into vintage canvas these days.

at 09:24 is that a lift point on the Outdoor Research bag in the torso position which can be used to further hold the bag off your body? I've seen it said that it has one guy loop so I guess thats it?

The biggest issue that people have with Bivvies is that they expect them to be a tiny tent. To me a bivy is ruggedized version of cowboy camping, which is why I love it. But you need to know that that’s what you’re getting into beforehand and be prepared to use it with a bivy mindset.

I've got the 1st edition Ridge Raider where the hoop goes inside the bivvy. I don't really use it anymore as the set up is so bloody awkward.

Compering tents vs bivi is like comparing cars vs motorbikes. Yes you are more exposed to winds and elements in a bivi but in return you feel it with your skin. You get a more saturated experience.

Always take my OEX bivvy just in case I get caught out. If you can handle having your face covered it's a tad lighter.

Give the Carinthia XPII Plus a go. And youll find all other bags are inferior. I can fit all my gear in it and me at 6ft with ease. Super strong and super waterproof. Down side is price and weight.

They do have their place, that's for sure. I still hope to get one at some point but if you have to get in or out when it is raining, you're in for a wet night. EDIT: I typed before finishing the video. You answered the condensation question. Thanks!

I have the elan. You have to be careful not to use a sleeping mat thicker than 2 inches. It's a bit too low for me, it makes it hard to maneuver inside. I'm interested in the ridge raider but struggling to justify the cost. I want to be stealth in wet weather so a tarp isn't an option for me. I have a gortex bivvy (no hoop). I was thinking I could modify a small dog tent to cover the head so I don't have to cinch it closed too tightly at the head. I'd have to wear a bug net on my head but it should work. Update: I found my next bivy: the Macpac Bush Cocoon

Warmth? I've had a play with both and have settled on a tarp, but even then I'll use my ten 9 times out of 10. But that 10th time, the tarp is fun and packs down to a very low volume
