Same for me. I left Tipton, Indiana 20 yrs ago and moved to Hawaii. Everybody asks me where my accent is from. I didn't even know I had one. You should hear them speak English here in Hawaii. it's called pigon english. Took me a while to catch on to some of it. Most of it is obvious but some with mixed hawaiian and portagee

Born and raised in Central Indiana. The only things I say differently is I always heard it called a “roly poly” instead of “potato bug.” I also say “soda,” but I feel like that changed over time. I am pretty sure I said “coke” for eveything when I was a kid. I have a tendency to say “you guys” but also “y’all.” 😂 My parents’ and grandparents’ generations used the infamous “warsh,” but most people in my generation and younger don’t use it. I follow a youtuber from NC and she said her kids don’t have accents at all and they are noticing accents disappearing. I wonder if that has to do with more exposure to “accentless” dialects via more tv channels, youtube, etc.

I'm from Indianapolis, though I have not lived their since 1979 and my accent has gone through an evolution through the years as my accent has been influenced by people from the Middle East, Great Britain, Russia, African Americans and living in Colorado since 1985. For the word "wash", our family said "worsh". For cement it was "see-mint". But some words were curiously refined: "envelope" was pronounced "on-velope" (such as you pronounced it). A couch was not a couch but a davenport. A toilet was not a toilet, but a commode. But the bug that curls up when you touch it was a "rolly-polly" to us (at least as kids). Oh, and by the way, when it rains while the sun shines (which it does quite frequently here in Colorado), "the devil is beating his wife". And, believe it or not, I learned that from a preacher! Thank you for the interesting post. I love anything that is related to language. It's such a fascinating (and controversial) subject. I would further mention, that when talking about a "Hoosier" accent, the accent of the people of Indiana is not monolithic. For example, it was from another Hoosier, when I was in college in Evansville, IN, who got me out of the habit of saying "worsh". As she stated, "There is no R in wash!"

I grew up near Columbus/Brown County and it's pretty close. I say y'all or "you all". It was Mamaw/Papaw growing up, but grandma/grandpa was probably more common. And yeah, it's always pronounced like "carmel". I live in Southern California now, and crayon is one that people seem to notice. I pronounce it more like "crown". Also, I pronounce pen/pin and ten/tin the same.

Your Hoosier accent is very noticeable. Sounds like you could either come from Kentucky or West Virginia. I lived in Indianapolis I was surprised how many people have this distinct accent. It’s still pretty awesome to have.😬 Where I’m at we say Soda instead of coke.

Thanks. A lot of Hoosiers don't think we have an accent at all. They're wrong. The Hoosier accent is probably more similar to Kentucky except we talk faster.

Mike S. It is very distinct but I so was surprised how different Indiana is compared to my state which is Wisconsin. I thought that it wouldn’t be a big difference since it was short of close to my state but it is very different. Meet some amazing people in Indiana they came form all walks of Indiana ranging from Trafalgar, Rising Sun, Washington, Muncie, Warsaw, Edinburgh, and Hanover. 👍 What’s funny while living there for awhile I actually picked up the Hoosier accent as well.😂 Than again hanging around with a bunch folks from the countryside would play a huge factor.😂

I lived in Indy for 2 years and these people have standard accents. Indiana is in the Midwest, so Hoosiers must have a standard American accent.
@cheeveka3
@cheeveka3 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sdoddi Well it depends on what part of Indiana you lived in. I think the typical standard accent is like how Ronald Reagan or Robin Williams sounds like. I still believe the Hoosier accent still sounds different. People in my area might mistake a Hoosier accent for southern accent. Hoosiers should be proud of their accent it’s distinct and unique. 🤗

My mother is from Southern Indiana (Daviess County), and she has some accent quirks I've never been able to figure out. Your pronunciation of "oil" is somewhat close to hers, but she says "oral" for "oil." She also says "feesh" for "fish." Instead of "eagle," she says "iggle," and instead of "bush," she says "boosh." I grew up in east central IL, so these pronunciations are different from mine. Do you ever hear anything like that ("oral" instead of "oil")?
