My little sister was obsessed with getting to go to Hooters when she was a kid, specifically because she asked my dad what it was and he told her it was a chicken restaurant where the waitresses wore costumes. Of course that would make any kid want to go! I’m not sure when she learned the truth about Hooters, we definitely never went as a family. 😂

Ironically Hooters _IS_ absolutely considered a family restaurant. Anyone who's been in one would see that. I mean, the women are skimpy but it's not a strip club lol. They're more covered up than if you saw them at a beach The overall concept is weird to me, but there's no doubt it's a place that families do go to.... eat wings and s--- lol

Thank you, Company Man, for discussing Hooters. 🧡 As a former Hooters Girl, I have many memories and stories I could share. One that comes to mind is when I worked at Pointe Orlando, and a family was vacationing from overseas. They attempted to see through the tinted windows but had no luck. Myself and another server opened the door and welcomed them in. They assumed we were all topless, and were afraid to come inside. After showing them around the restaurant, and them seeing that we were fully clothed, the family of four stayed and ate lunch. The family was kind and appreciated that we all took the time to greet them and make them feel welcome. I worked with a fantastic staff at three locations. The job gave me a deeper appreciation for individuals in the food service industry. 🧡

Same way you never see a nerdy looking chick selling jeans in the mall at Aeropostal….. its an image thing. If you dont wear the clothing or LOOK like somebody who models for the company, you’re not getting hired….. I know this because my ex girlfriend used to work there, and she was a slimpy little blonde who was only hired because of how she looks. She openly hated the job and they didn’t fire her.

I just love the idea of someone in an incredibly serious tone saying "I go to Hooters for the food". I'm sure there's folks out there who genuinely go there for it and I throw no shade their way, but it paints a funny picture in my mind like saying you subscribe to Penthouse for the articles.

I can say that the first time I went to Hooters it genuinely was for the food. I was doing a study abroad program in France one summer and after five weeks of French culture and cuisine I decided I needed a break and took a weekend trip to Interlaken Switzerland. By this point I was strongly missing good ol' American food and was craving a cheese burger. The first day in Interlaken, I was walking thru the town center and noticed they had a Hooters. I actually laughed out loud at the sight of a Hooters, of all the American chain restaurants, in Europe but no way in hell was I going to go in. I had never been to a Hooters before because of "moral principle" and the idea of going to one in Europe seemed to confirm all the European stereotypes of Americans in my mind and, therefore, gross. But on the second day...that cheeseburger craving was intense, so I caved and went in to Hooters and ordered their Queso cheeseburger. Believe me when I say it was one of the most delicious burgers I have ever had. I actually went back on the third day and ordered another. So yes, it is possible to go to Hooters just for the food, but it takes some unique circumstances lol

One aspect about Hooters you didn't mention, pretty much the only reason I ever went, was because they would show large pay-to-watch sporting events, most especially UFC fights. Yeah, plenty of bars did too, but you could go to hooters with underage friends to watch a UFC fight for relatively cheap. I think the rise of UFC really helped Hooters back in the day, because otherwise I never would have gone in, and funny enough I stopped going when I didn't watch UFC.

You could have mentioned they get around discrimination because they have never hired a waitress. They are classified as models who happen to serve food. The 1992 Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway is widely considered to be the best NASCAR race in the modern era - Jeff Gordon's first race, Richard Petty's last race, Bill Elliott winning the race with Alan Kulwicki finishing a distant 2nd leading the most laps, getting that 5 point bonus, running conservatively winning the championship thanks to that points bonus. Great job mentioning his championship, his triumph and tragedy the following year. Good work

My mom used to HATE hooters because she bought into the negative hype and thought it was a strip club masquerading as a restaurant. Then my dad dragged her there (my mom was about to kill him for that one) then when she actually got in and tried it she liked it and like the atmosphere and changed her mind about the place. It is a strip club masquerading as a restaurant. Their food is mediocre, it’s comparable to something like Applebee’s or a chain like it. The real appeal are the women working there. If you’re looking to go to a restaurant for wings or to watch a game it isn’t really a top destination.

In Wichita Falls, the Hooters here has been in the news twice for the wrong reasons: 1. The first time happened eight days after it opened, where a white customer racially harassed an Asian waitress. He wrote on the billing paper: "Get a different job damn Jandice (Jaundice),” & left a .70 cent tip, too. The waitress immediately quit since they tried to tell her to ignore it, but once noticing they weren't going to defend her, she left. SN: If you don't know what jaundice is, it's a disease when your skin is yellow. 2. The second incident involves a Hooters girl being involved in a gruesome murder. As it came to her bail, she bragged in court that she makes enough from OnlyFans that her money will pay for it. However, the courts decided to freeze her accounts where she wasn't able to use it at all.

A funny Hooters story: Back in 91' I was in college on the GI bill and due to my age (28) I was staying in the Masters/Foreign Exchange student dorm, they were all solo rooms. I met a lot of great guys from all over there, good times. Almost all of us were in our early to late 20's except this one ECON student studying for his Masters. He'd graduated early from HS and earned his BS degree by the time he was only 20. A smart guy. He lived across the hall so I knew him pretty well, well enough to know his birthday was coming up. I offered to take him out to dinner on a Friday and his choice was: Hooters. I was puzzled, I'd never thought the food was terribly memorable and the wings were not the best. So I drive us over to the local spot in Knoxville TN and we're seated, his head is on a constant swivel from the time we entered. Just before our food arrives he asks, "When do they take their tops off, I've never been to a strip club..." Well Fella, you picked the wrong kind of establishment for that! I just laughed and said, "This is as good as it gets!" and explained things. He had a lot of "Sheldon from the Big Bang" mannerisms/vibes and was from a fairly sheltered family life. We ate, left and he never asked me to take him to a strip club or back to Hooters. In the 30+ years since then I've been to Hooters only twice, both times when a friend wanted to go. I have visited a Twin Peaks maybe 10 times (for lunch with the office guys) after a location opened just 5 minutes from the corporate office where I worked, they actually have a surprisingly decent menu and fast service.

The lawsuits about discrimination in hiring or firing people that refuse to do their hair or clothes in some way (the job explicitly involves looking a certain way), is clowning, but those mistreatment or sexual harassment ones are legit. Really a stupid look that they weren't on top of that kind of behavior from the beginning. When you're hiring good looking girls en masse, you'd think this would have been a concern from day 1.

I've been to Hooters exactly once, in Albuquerque with my uncle, aunt and cousin before seeing a Pixar matinee at the adjacent discount theater. The place was overwhelmingly sad. The waitresses looked way too young. The drinks were watery. The potato skins beneath their heaps of wilted green onions were lukewarm and leathery. I like breasts but I don't like Hooters.

Reminds me of the first time I went to Hooters back in the early 9O’s, except I was pleased to have a young, scantily clad flirtatious woman bring food I don’t even remember what it was or what it tasted like. Matter of perspective I guess. It’s not for everybody if you want to critique the food; just like a whole bunch of restaurants that sell atmosphere and not quality food. As a 15 year old boy, I remembered that trip to Hooters numerous times just before I went to sleep for months afterwards. I know I certainly got the money’s worth my uncle spent for me to eat whatever I got at Hooters that evening. Her name was Katy BTW. She was taller than me with long blond hair.

@@enigmawyoming5201 Completely different topic, but your comment opened up a deep hidden memory of mine from when I first moved to Albuquerque. I went to a Weck's with a couple of friends who smoked out my husband and I out with some very intense wax dabs beforehand. As all four of us sat down at the table, the waitress came up and recognized my pal's wife. They got into a very intense conversation about the waitress having found a whole rat in her Twister's burrito and how she'll never go there again. The entire time we were all stoned out of our minds and to this day I still question if her story was remotely true or not. We all sat in silence listening to this ongoing conversation of a rat in a burrito. A very unappetizing discussion before getting your food. Felt like I walked into an alternate reality. That Weck's shut down shortly after.

I think eventually restaurant like this will fizzle out but not because of the women servers in tiny outfits. I know people in my generation tend to almost look down on chain restaurants because the food is just mediocre at best. Too many individually owned places are popping up with great food at prices similar to the chains. I live in downtown Denver and you don’t see any of these types of places at all. The last sit down large chain restaurant we had was a Chilis that closed about a year ago because they couldn’t afford to stay open anymore.

Hooters does have the best sauces and Fried Pickles, but the beer selection at Twin Peaks is better and they make about 95% of all the food stuff in house. I've even worked as a cook at the three major Breastaurants. Hooters, Tilted Kilt, and Twin Peaks. Hooters felt like it was more of an individual environment while Twin Peaks was a team environment. Oh, I've even been to the Twin Peaks in Waco before the police started that violent incident.

Honestly, it doesn't have to be that way, but you'd need the people running the company to have a strict code of making sure there wasn't any inappropriate bullshit going on to protect the women. I doubt that's what those six guys who founded Hooters had in mind, but for any place doing something similar to the Hooters schtick, the code of conduct and unspoken but heavily enforced rules could be "Look, we know you're here to ogle the pretty women, and they'll talk sweet to you and make you feel special, but your pleasure ends where their discomfort begins. Don't be a creep and say weird, gross, sexist, harassing shit, and DON'T touch the women, and you don't get thrown out. Sound good? Now enjoy some wings and sexy ladies."

this is slightly off topic but i went to a "tilted kilt" nearly 10 years ago, and at one point i saw a family there with a little girl and it kind of made me uncomfortable. but ill say this, it turned out that it was the little girls birthday, and before you come at me with knives, at one point the servers had her stand on a bar stool (she wasn't terribly old) and basically the whole restaurant sang her happy birthday. its honestly a really wholesome memory in my mind coming from something i thought would be a negative given the circumstances. The servers were always so nice. Most of the women had kids, one waitress was pregnant, so we had a lot in common. Since we went when it wasn’t very busy we usually had time to chat.
