I am glad. The reason I commented on this was because I'm not a huge watch person at all, yet I considered buying a MVMT watch based on the hundreds of positive reviews on their website. But with some more digging, it appears that a lot of those reviews for essentially bribed with free watches or heavily discounted ones to say positive things. Then I came across youtube videos that explained how they don't last very long at all (some as little as 3 months). and cheap ones of the SAME EXACT watches can be found on sites like ebay and alibaba just without MVMT written in tiny letters.

In 2010 I was one of the engineers who tried to develop the two speed transmission for the Tesla Roadster at Magna. We developed it at our New Venture Gear facility which had been a powertrain supplier to all of the big 3 for decades as New Process Gear. We had all kinds of durability testing and transmission dyno and engineering facilities but we could never make their dry sump 2-speed design last. Every reiteration burnt up in durability testing. The car ended up shipping with the transmission locked into a single gear and the project ended up in a lawsuit.

@JakeobE
@JakeobE 6 жыл бұрын
It didn't really fund the model S because the costs were so high to produce the Roadster and because the market price was so high, it couldn't appeal to mass market. It did help though in securing funding through investors for the model S and the $100's of millions needed to buy the Fremont factory and also get it ready for operation.
@redbaron6805
@redbaron6805 6 жыл бұрын
It was never meant to be mass market, it was a proof of concept. That electric cars could be fun, cool and smoke almost everything else around them, and the Roadster proved that beyond a doubt.
@redbaron6805
@redbaron6805 6 жыл бұрын
mondayfool Although it didn't pay for the Model S platform, it proved the technology was viable and created enough buzz for people to be interested in ordering the Model S when it went into production. It was a prototype which they learned a ton from, since there was template to really go by. No one had built anything comparable up to that point. But I guess your comments just reflect your screen name.
@redbaron6805
@redbaron6805 6 жыл бұрын
mondayfool There were a bunch of one off conversions, but keep in mind, even starting with a Lotus frame, they had to tear it apart and modify it to the point where they said they ended up using only a fraction of it. That taught them that using ICE frames and converting them simply wasn't viable, you have to start with a dedicated EV frame. The same thing GM learned when they starting making the Bolt off the Spark frame, and ended up developing a dedicated EV frame instead. In an EV, there is no transmission tunnel, no drive shaft tunnel needed, you need floor space for the batteries which doesn't exist in a ICE car, the room up front where the engine sits ends up mostly empty, but you need room underneath for the motors, but don't need the gas tank, etc. etc. Most EV's up to that point were done by just stuffing batteries where they could find space in a ICE frame, which made them both short range and clunky, and reduced the utility too much. The Roadster set a few bench marks no one had really seen before. The car had record range, the handling for a EV was actually pretty good, it was stunning fast at 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds, and it looked pretty sharp being Lotus Elise look alike. So, as much as people like to dismiss it, it set a whole new bench mark for EV's as being fast, sharp looking and fun to drive, and sparked the interest needed for the Model S. A lot of the core design that had never been used, like using the 18650 cells and the battery cooling system, was in many ways revolutionary, and something that was built upon and improved on the Model S. It also allowed Supercharging, as without the cooling system, that simply wouldn't be possible. The Roadster can't be Supercharged as the cooling system was never designed for that. In many ways, regardless of the commercial success of the Roadster, a lot of the design and R&D that went into it was the foundation for the Model S. Starting the Model S from scratch without all that initial work to build on would have been extremely difficult and probably would have killed it before they ever got it into production. That may be the point that many people miss about the Roadster. Whether the Roadster succeeded commercially or not was not the important part. The fact that it was the foundation of the technology used in the Model S, and a hugely valuable learning and R&D tool is what makes it important. Without it, Tesla as it is today probably would just be another failed project like the Fisker Karma.

This car was a proof of concept if anything. Taking a Lotus Elise and changing the clam shells isn't expensive due to the design of the chassis which easily allows this. The car demonstrated the potential in a modern context and provided enough interest and enthusiasm to allow for greater investment in following models. Job done in that sense.

I have great empathy with the comment about owners 'Keeping rear tires on them". I've ridden motorcycles for 45 years. Despite every improvement in rubber compounds and tire design over the decades, the tires are lasting a fraction of the mileage because of the Horsepower/Torque numbers fed them are two and 3 times what they were 25 years ago. Riding like the 21yr old I was in 1977 I'd get 10 to 13,000 miles from a rear tire on a 750+cc bike. Now taking total care NOT to jack-rabbit around I can barely get 5000 miles out of a rear tire.

Note on range… The battery on that car may be in better condition than you thought. If you fully charge it in Standard Mode, then the car is actually hiding roughly 50 miles of range from you! To see the full capacity you have to charge it in Range Mode. Mine charges to about 160-170 miles in standard mode (depending on which charger I use, which is another quirk), but when I fully charge in range mode it goes up to around 205-220.

@@jalderink That's completely not the point. In order for a business to remain viable and it's parent company not to drop it like a bad habit (which it would be at that point) and it to vaporise it has to make a profit. This is because the whole point in a business venture is to make a profit. So, If KZfaq doesn't remain profitable (Which it finally seems to be, albeit barely) Google will eventually shut it down. This is because running massive servers and giving away servers to ISPs is expensive. KZfaq requires massive amounts of hardware and Bandwidth to work. The reason KZfaq gives away hardware is so that some of the more popular videos people watch can be stored right at Your ISP lowering the amount of bandwidth needed by google to keep KZfaq operating. Drove my 2010 Roadster over 200 miles today, then came home to find this clickbait headline. >.< Compared with previous electric cars, the Roadster was miraculous when it was new. Even though you might call it a failure in some ways, it was a fantastically valuable learning exercise for Tesla. Their partnership with Lotus, and the talented people they hired away from Lotus Engineering, taught them how creating a car is done. Even today, if you want an electric sports car, and especially if you want an open top, the original Tesla Roadster is pretty much it. Taking the top off and cruising around is such a lovely experience; you can hear the birds chirping and conversations as you pass by, the tree tops are passing overhead, it's like sailing. If only I was able to access the Supercharger network with it, I wouldn't even want anything else.

@ Lassi Kinnunen Actually Tesla Model 3 is the #1 selling car in terms of revenue in the US. Top 5 in sales and the others are 26-30,000 $ cars with the average TM3 costing over 50k, and production is ramping up quickly. Tesla has 80% of the US ev market and the Model 3 outsold all BMW passenger cars combined in the US in August. And they are growing rapidly.

+Red Baron: sorry buddy, but you really need to learn a bit more before you post.....as you will see in the attached drawing, there IS a drivetrain that includes a differential, half shafts, u joints, and I bet there's some sort of trasnmission in the housing (either geared or chain). Rated at 1 million miles.....any link to support that claim? Just an FYI: many things are "rated" for miles, hours, years, etc but those ratings are based on laboratory conditions and in perfect scenarios. In the real world those ratings don't mean diddley. I've have tool batteries that were rated for 500 charge/discharge cycles and don't even get 100 out of them. Oh, you used it outside? nay nay. You used it below freezing? nay nay. You used it in 30+ C summer heat? nay nay. Oh my, you got it WET? nay nay...... www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=www.teslarati.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Tesla-Model-S-Assembly-e1378883403298.jpg&imgrefurl=www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-weight/&h=854&w=700&tbnid=iYmcPx5FERYb5M&tbnh=248&tbnw=203&vet=1&docid=qSoCfdDEd3AN4M

@ChunkyMonkaayyy
@ChunkyMonkaayyy 6 жыл бұрын
The Model S is already on it's way to seeing high miles. There's a ton that've already racked up hundreds of thousands of miles and a few that are near 500k. All with not much maintenance done to them. Just tires/alignments, wiper blades, and software upgrades. The original Roadster may not see a million miles for a long time simply because not many are out there and not many of those are being driven a lot.

When they made the original roadster I was all about it, it was basically just an amazing take on the Lotus Elise, which was my favourite car at the time. Simple, light, quick and electric... and Tesla really was pioneering the idea. While I am happy that they grew to become a huge company and don't make shitboxes anymore, I don't really care for any of the gimmicks of the new Teslas, and I'm afraid they completely steered away from the original concept. This said, I am definately curious about new things coming out, hopefully less gimmicks and more driving pleasure.
