If the check engine light on a BMW ever goes out permanently it’s probably the bulb.

I loved my 2001 740i, got it with 74k miles and set about to replace everything that needed it. Complete suspension, guibo, center driveshaft bearing, entire cooling system after a catastrophic failure, stereo with factory widescreen NAV, grill and more I am sure I am forgetting. If you are unable to work on them yourself and only write checks for others to work on them, they are a horrible car. If you can turn your own wrenches they are the easiest car in the world to work on. Everything is assembled logically and it is the smoothest car for traveling you can own. I only sold mine because we moved out to the country and I knew the dirt roads would destroy it after two years and thousands of dollars to restore it.

I would replace buy with lease, and only if you can bury most of it in business expenses. Buy one and you'll suffer horrific depreciation & have to deal with time lost if it has to go back for warranty issues. Otherwise I totally agree, they are disposable commodities, like pretty much every mid-tier luxury car is these days, especially the German ones. This is of course totally on purpose to drive new car sales, and of course, they do not give one shit about the amount of pollution and landfill they are generating, as long as the cash keeps rolling in - sure you can recycle the steel, aluminium and copper, but most of the hard plastics & electronics in them are destined for landfill, and there are a LOT of hard plastics and electronics. Green my arse.

It was a 2000 year and in all those years it only required a MAF. It was serviced every year using quality parts and the best oil I could find. Couple of pixels died during my ownership but easy fix in the UK. Eventually I was offered an amazing price for the car and I really struggled on wether to sell it. Turns out I wish that I had kept it as the 540i M Tech Sport is getting difficult to find in good condition. A quick check of the resources available in the UK shows the car fully legal and still being used. I put 70 Thousand miles of the car with regular maintenance and replacing consumables like brakes etc. Great car if looked after properly

My e38 (728) reached 190000 miles last year before the radiator exploded and it died for good. When I purchased it five years earlier it was the cheapest 728 in the UK price at £425 (due to a rusty gas tank). But I loved it. The quality, the drive. Sublime. "they lease cheaply" spot on. That is how they are still on the market. I had an E21 and an E30, my dad had the E21 (bought it brand new in 1975) and friends around me had E36, E38, E34 and E39. For me personally, the E38, E39 and E46 represent the end of the line for BMW for the respective series. Anything later is only junk, when compared (at least in my eyes). I still have an E46 330Cd. After having moved on to a 2015 Audi A6 Allroad, I returned to the much more agile BMW, that had been sitting, waiting. Daunted at first by the complexity, well, for my standards, I now do all of the work myself. Although it is a "mechanic-friendly" car (i.e. it enjoys _very_ regular maintenance) I don't regret it. Definitely a keeper.

People can say whatever they like about BMW's... in general buying a used car is only going to be as good the people that owned it before you. Take the most reliable vehicle you can think of and skip oil changes, run crap gas and treat it poorly and you will have a bad experience. Speaking personally, I own and currently run an E36 M3 and E39 M5 and both have been excellent cars. I bought them both used, from a previous owner that I trusted and admired with confidence that they took care of these vehicles since new. Run good oil and gas, have a relationship with your vehicle and you can truly enjoy a BMW. These cars are not meant for those who want bluetooth and cupholders...

Every time I watch a Hoovie video on BMWs, I feel like the luckiest man alive. I've owned two 3-series for the last 18 years, a '99 323i and '02 M3. Aside from two recalls and new tires, neither has needed a mechanic in ~150k miles. I've done consumables - fluids and brakes, water pump on the 323, rear subframe bushings on the M3 (most involved repair), and ignition coils/plugs around 110k miles - that was the only time I've seen the check engine light in 13 years and 50k miles of M3 ownership. Everything was cheap to replace myself. Maybe the e46 is the high watermark for BMW because nothing about my experience would make me think BMWs are junk. I do admit I have no desire to own a newer one.

This is why people need to find a good private mechanic hopefully one that specializes in that Brand. At one time I had a Volvo a Acura and a Honda Pilot. I had 2 mechanics one that specialized in Volvos only and one that specialized in Hondas. The Volvo Dealer that it was bought new from wanted to sell you the same car twice once when you bought it and again through their service department they also had a Young Female Service Advisor who knew nothing about Cars and was probably only qualified to work at the Gap. She once told me that my 5K Service was $100.00 which is only an oil change which I questioned it she replied that well we also lubricate the Power Antenna Shaft. Well I guess it is worth $70.00 to take a can of WD-40 spray it on a rag and rub it on the Antenna. Another time they wanted to charge me $2500.00 to fix my AC because It had a bad compressor and condenser that is when I found the private Volvo Mechanic. His first ? was did they even try to recharge it because in his 31 years he has never seen that model compressor fail that was used on 2 different models he recharged it and it was Ice Cold. With my Acura one day in stop and go Traffic on a hot day it overheated but I was close to home and took the next off ramp and if the car was moving the Temp Gauge would start to go down. I took it to the Acura Dealer near where I work the next day (if the car was moving the Temp Gauge would stay in range) just to have it checked out. They called me later on saying the entire engine would have to be rebuilt keep in mind the car was running fine. I declined and drove the car home I think they just wanted to scare me and trade it in cheap on a new car. That is when I found the Private Honda Mechanic They topped off the coolant or changed it checked over the engine and said it was perfectly fine and charged me Less than $50.00 With my Honda Pilot when it was relatively new I brought it in for an oil change at 15K miles and was informed that I needed to change my differential fluid and replace the rear brakes the car was still under warranty so I would only take it to a Honda dealer until the warranty expired in case there ever were any problems after that it would go to the Private Honda Shop.
