Totally worth a mild restoration. Stop the cancer before it gets way out of control. Remember paint hides all sins !! The world's most beautiful car of all time deserves a $10K paint job and body repair.

Yeah that outer door skin is already done for, by the time rust is poking out through the paint all the way along like that it's probably too far gone to bother trying to patch if you want a decent result. Hard to tell on camera but the rest of it looks salvageable without going OTT, if it's done right now.

Great, great video!! What a find. I drove an E-type back in 1972. My boss wanted me to run an errand so he let this 23-year--old take his jag on the freeway around Columbus Ohio. The experience was uncannily like driving a four-wheeled motorcycle. A four-wheeled Dunstall Norton Commando. No muss, no fuss, no histrionics, just give it a little gas and watch everything disappear in the rear view mirror. So incredibly cool. Never forgot that ride, thanks for the reminder!

I've owned a whole lot of cars but my '1966 E-Type Roadster" was one of the top three most memorable and it was undoubtedly in the top two of the most beautifu. Even after 50+ years, these cars still look fantastic. I purchased my '66 in Germany while stationed there in 1969. It was on my base with a "FOR SALE" sign so I contacted the owner and traded him my 1969 Simca 1200S plus $350. Being 23 years old and driving a Jag around Germany was unreal and I loved it. I shipped the car to New Jersey where I was discharged from the military and drove the car, without incident across the USA to California. That was one of the most memorable times of my life. The top was down the whole time. Stopped in Denver to visit a buddy I was stationed with and spent nine days with him. The long and short of the story was I found out why Jags have the reputation they do. As beautiful as they are, they are crap for reliability and maintenance. Rust, electrical, mechanicl and structurally they will get you and get you good. The "fun" factor gets a score of 100 when it comes to driving them. The "looks" factor gets a score of 100000 when looking at them. The score of maintenance is truly "off the charts" as you will soon find out. To own one and maintain one has to be a labor of love that is blind. I found out very soon in 1970 that I couldn't afford the car so I traded it for a 1969 L-71 427/435 Corvette with under 4000 miles. I still own and drive that same car today. It's every single bit as good looking and it's very maintainable. My 'Vette has 180,000 miles and is still going strong. I hope your "new" Jag gives you that much service. Drive it. Look at it. Enjoy it. I truly understand why people "love/hate" these cars. Can't wait to see what "weezard" has to say about it in three months. Best of luck.

Like many as beautiful, they are capricious. It's part of the magic. So wonderful and enviable, yet almost untenable no matter how rich and patient you are. A friend discovered a professional top consultant he sometimes managed to hire was selling cheap a wonderful 12 cylinder , his dream coupe. He was ready to sign a check after seeing the car. But in a moment of lucidity, he asked 'Oh, come on, why are you selling it? Where is the hidden problem I cannot find?' The affluent pro replied 'The car is perfect, no rust, few Kms, I am the original owner, but I cannot afford it'.

Any cars that spent time in the UK are just waiting to rust, badly. Salt is used on the icy roads during winter, not grit. The salt is paid for by the British Auto Makers Association, (or similar) guess why. They tried the same trick in NZ but were foiled by objections to salt ending up in our streams.
@louislazarus9253

@@howardsimpson489 These cars don't actually need "salt" to rust. Just water. If a company like Lexus decided to produce this exact car, I'd be the first in line to buy one. Imagine those "Hollywood Good Looks" with the perfection it deserved.

In 1961 on the road serious 1 E type 3.8 £ 2.089 Sterling .in USA same car $ 2.491 . to keep the price down there was NO under body protection so rust caused by just water eat away at them never mind in the UK they spread tens of thousands of tons of salt .as some one mentioned deliberately done so you had to keep buying there cars 😂😂😂

Hey Tyler, love the car! Me and my dad have a Business here in the UK specialising in all things E Type, restoring and repairing them so if you ever need advice or parts even let us know! I agree with what you say about original survivor cars, there is some magic you can’t restore back into them, nothing drives like a good E. Also I believe with your car being a US example it’ll have the lower ratio LSD making it more accelerative at the cost of top speed. If you wanted to check the body number there is a little tab behind the left hand boot panel with it on however it’s not un heard of for these to sometimes be different in true British fashion 😂. Best wishes Tyler you deserve all your success.

I'm going to assume you're talking about Edmond, OK. Both of my parents grew up in Edmond in the 60s and anything east of Bryant or south of 33rd was "out in the sticks" considering how small town was back then. I-35 had 4-Way stop signs as did what is now Broadway Extension from Edmond to downtown OKC. I still remember in the early 90s when there was a small grass airfield on the SE corner of 33rd and Broadway, and either side of the train tracks from Memorial to 15th was farmland.

Friend of mine, (sadly passed away 2020), owned three E-types in the 60/70s. I went with him to pick up the first one, a Coupe. He traded-in his MGB for it. Car was at a dealers in New Cross Gate, London, and we had to get back to Basingstoke. So we drove back along the Old Kent Road. After about a mile he said to me, "Frase, I can't get it out of 2nd", to which I replied, "Oh No, is the gearbox knackered", to which he said "No, its just so fast !!"

This has to be the best car you’ve ever bought. A perfect car in perfect spec, the right colour and wheels on an S1. Please drive it just as the previous owner has quite clearly loved it. Its a car which the kids these days will never see if owners just locks it away to be preserved indefinitely. As a brit I love to see E types every now and then but they are never presented like this. PS, I’ve seen E type number 1 in the flesh (as driven by JC in the top gear episode) and it has to be the most beautiful thing in the world, same S1 in british racing green with wire wheels. AND THERE IS -NOTHING- like a 1owner LOVED 4.2litre e-type, or, it's big monstrous brother the mk10 or 420G when BMC-Leyland bought the controlling shares they re-named them. I've owned a 1965 4.2 litre mk10, for 9 years, when 19, after 5 yrs ownership I bought a super rare series xj6 4.2 Long Wheelbase car , as out of 98,000 series 1's only 2600 body shells were the LWB cars , owned it 32 years and sold it as I bought 10 years back another 1 owner 50,000mile 1967 420G (mk10) . ALL 3 were sought out the 2 x mk10's were the ultra high output bronze head(engine) basically race spec engine , the 1973, but completed 1974 LWB 4.2 xj6 was a custom order car too built by Jaguar Racing division . With the UHO bronze engine heads , they have beyond 300 horsepower, I'm a doctor, the 2 x mk100's were also owned by doctors,. I love the drone from the factory stainless steel tuned exhausts , in 2nd gear they have a wonderful , powerful drone that makes the spine tingle , and , life worth living .

As a friend of mine said, with the power and narrow tires, you could dial your drift angle in to the degree. Beautiful noise from the inline six. Finest British craftsmanship: an electric fan blade broke off. If I could have one car back, this would be it.

Your best car purchase for a long time, beautiful! You don't have to do a full restoration but it would be lovely to see the rust spots sorted to preserve her and fix the hood, just a staggering looking beauty ❤️

What a machine, they are certainly a unique driving experience, far more modern to drive than you would think but still old school feeling, the smells and sounds etc. They last much better when they are used properly, got nice and warm to blow out condensation, taken up in the revs to avoid carbon build up etc. Beautiful

Thanks Tyler for your respect to our beloved HRH Queen Elizabeth II. We in the UK (and I'm sure the rest of the world) are still very stunned by her passing as the majority of us have not known anything else in our lives to be so consistently present.....The E Type is beautiful. My uncle used to own a V12 in Cherry red in the 70's if I remember correctly, it was gorgeous but I don't think he owned it for very long as he soon started a family after having it and got a Volvo 120. I actually remember seeing a few mkI's on the road in the day....I was born in 1962. Keep up the excellent content you have a job to die for but sure you have put in a lot of hours to get to where you are today. Well done and thankyou.

Jaguar's reputation plummeted during the 70's for all sorts of issues...but owning 3 Jaguars...I think they are very underrated. Awesome cars that can be bought for reasonable money.

I have to agree. I owned a 2000 XJR for ten years, with very few issues. At 45,000 miles the instrument cluster had to be replaced due to a defect. Other than that, only routine maintenance. I loved the power of that small supercharged V8 and luxuriously appointed interior. I’ve loved Jags since I was a kid and would love to get my hands on a 60s vintage XK.

100% agree, on my 3rd Jag as well and I've been in love ever since the 1st one. Not perfect cars by any means but no car really is, they do have a way of feeling special though and that's what really matters.

Jaguar wasn't a big company. In '65 Jaguar was bought, eventually becoming part of British Leyland - therein is the downfall.

But the history that accomapnied this car is the icing on the cake - it makes the whole experience that much more personal and powerful. Beautiful, and I hope you enjoy it for many many years to come.

This was a great episode! One of my favorite cars and I loved how much you enjoyed it! It was an engineering and design marvel at the time, a direct descendant of Jaguar's Type C and D racing program with quite an impressive racing history of it's own. A truly phenomenal automobile. And I completely agree, the late Series 1 E-types were the best ever built. If you ever decide to part with it... yes please.

Only scary thing is the brakes. Also, if you forgot to latch the bonnet down properly and it flies up when stopping at the lights... That might explain the marks on the front at the bottom.

A Tesla cruised smoothly by me on the Albany Albany Highway here in Western Australia today and I thought, that's nice, but I can live without it. It would have been harder to let it go if had been you cruising past in that EType!! Well done and may you enjoy it for a long time.

In my younger days, I got to help work on and drive the 400th six cylinder E type made in new zealand (all documents were with it, made interesting reading). It was raced at Ardmore aerodrome, when they held races there. The owner had it maintained by a mechanic who had trained at Jaguar in England.
