You all seem to love asking and hearing what sound different brands of rear hubs make so...this is just you for lot!
The new HOPE PRO 5 hub is just lovely and has quite the different sound to it's 'parent' hub, the Pro 4. Join me as we compare we hear the PRO 5 alongside the 4, the road oriented RS4CL, and the hubs I use in house from Bitex.

Hey Ryan, I know Bitex hubs have been your go to hub as you mentioned. Curious how you would rate them (Bitex 312) against hubs like the Hope Pro 4 or DT350's for instance? Curious on your personal thoughts. Thank you.
@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels Жыл бұрын
A proper video for another time @Gabrielfong but - in short - I think Bitex are excellent compared to hub sets such as the Pro4 or 350 that come with at least another £100 price tag. GRANTED you're not getting the premium anodised finish, made in the UK, goodness of Hope's offerings (and the Pro5 is a HUGE upgrade), but you ARE getting a super reliable hub that spins around high quality bearings and - in the case of Bitex boost hubs - save a fair bit of weight too. (Caveat being that for rough riders I have to suggest Hope is a better option). DT350's are super durable; more so than Bitex's offerings simply due to two factors: -Much stiffer axles by comparison -the ratchet freehub design remains exceptionally sturdy. BUT...(there's always a but!) I've sold thousands of Bitex hubs with no higher a 'problem rate' (which is low) versus Hope or DT...so I very much view them as a 'wheel builders choice' option when wanting to offer competitively priced handbuilt hoops :-).

Good Day. What spoke length/nipples did you use for the Hope pro 5/DT Swiss EX511 build. Thank You! Cant seem to find proper hub spec dimensions anywhere.
@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels Жыл бұрын
Hope have got all their hub dimensions up on the 'Tech' / support section of their website and DT publish their (accurate; see my video on the subject) ERD on the rims and online go check it out! Being able to calculate (and measure) your own components and spoke length is a vital skill to those building wheels so always double check and perform your own calc's. My go to Spocalc is Wheelpro by Roger Musson.

Qestion? Have all high end hubs all come so good/homogened that people are choosing which hub to buy by the sound that they make?
@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels Жыл бұрын
@D10010101 And a good question for sure! I'd say no...but with a caveat. At the high end, and when used appropriately I think it's REALLY hard to find a bum product when it comes to hub's these day. SOME are super finicky and need a lot of care IMO...but unless used outside of their intended use you're QUITE RIGHT that high end hubs could be said to be universally excellent. BUT...they're not homogenised to my view. First and foremost I think there's price point (per pair): £(Cheap hubs to be discussed another day...) £115-210 ish: Quality OEM hubs like Bitex Circa £300: HOPE or DT Swiss 350's. Circa £450-550: Any others not mentioned here. Honourable mentions DT 240's, White Industries, Industry Nine, Tune. (Bracket option @£650: Royce Hubs) Circa £850: Onyx, Chris King, DT180's £Truly Stupid Money: Gokiso. And OUTSIDE of those price points it's then down to which features you're looking for or that most excite you. Do you want: -Ultra lightweight hubs? -Super Durable hubs with a ratchet mechanism? -Hubs that are perfectly quiet? -Super high POE? -Dorkily high machining tolerances and made in house bearings? -Supporting a local manufacturer -Specific colour options? -Jewel like or custom finishes? -Specialists in SS or Fixed gear? And the list could go on...! SO! I Don't think that people are choosing between *brands* based on the sound when freewheeling...and whilst all hubs are great quality at certain levels, there ARE those riders who specifically like a loud or a quiet hub and seek out hubs that aren't going to offend their sensibilities! Hope that helps chap!

@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels 11 ай бұрын
In terms of the freehub itself not that I know no; Steel/E-Bike designation switches out to 6 evenly spaced pawls to give that 54 whilst the alloy has two sets of three at a half pitch to each other for 108. I'm pretty sure a 2x3 steel isn't an option but will look into this to confirm.

The pro 5 appears to be much quieter and more greased in a way. I tend to like louder hubs with a lot of clicks more and am wondering if you think it would noticeably change the loudness if I were to remove a little bit of grease? I know its not recommended but thinking theoretically
@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels Жыл бұрын
The Pro5 actually uses a thinner oil rather than grease in this case but you could go thinner yet again or run it drier *should you so wish* but let's just say it wouldn't be advised ;-).
@adrianTNT
@adrianTNT Жыл бұрын
It is also quieter because at all time it has 3 (out of 6) pawls making contact, the hope 4 has 4 out of 4 at all times. And the hope 5 has way more engagement points because 3 make contact in between the other 3. Someone correct me if I am wrong :)

how is the driver drag on the Hope Pro 5 rear hub?
@jeremyprovonsil7886
@jeremyprovonsil7886 6 ай бұрын
It is even lower than the Pro 4. I own a set of each (4 & 5) and the Pro 4 was my favorite hub for single speeding. Rolls so well and carries momentum nicely. The Pro 5 seems to roll better/longer and the engagement is bumped up just enough to be noticeable, but not infringe upon the low drag of the hub body. Super easy to service right at home with normal tools so that is also a huge plus for me. Sound doesn’t enter the equation for me, although the Pro 5 is quieter and higher pitched buzz vs Pro 4 loud, solid “clicking”. As with most any hub, run oil for louder, grease to hush it some.

Could be they've got a bit more grease / lubricant than needed; give the freehub pawl / ratchet area a clean out (could also be caked with mud if you ride loads!) and re-lube; HopeTech have guidelines for the sort of lube you'll want to use but generally speaking the lighter you go the noisier your hubs ;-).

What is the quietist quality hub? Still Shimano?
@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels 8 ай бұрын
If you're OK with cup and cone hubs then and Shimano's freehub setup then yes; but this of course means you're stuck with either HG or MS as your only options and don't get the benefit of sealed bearings. Onyx or Tairin are the 'quietest' in that they're silent but both at a cost; they come into what I'd call the 'High End' category ;-)

Hi mate. Just a quick question. I was after a new rear wheel on my hardcore hardtail. My riding is all round - general trail, some cross country,and enduro style trails with some jumps and drops. I am looking at the hope pro five on the the fortus single cavity 29 rim, or handbuilt bitex hubs on dt swiss ex511 29 inch rims. They are about the same price, but was wondering what the best one would be? Your thoughts would be much appreciated thankyou
@RyanBuildsWheels
@RyanBuildsWheels 20 күн бұрын
I definitely prefer the EX511 as a rim and - depending on rider weight and riding style you're likely able to get away with the XM481 instead TBH :-). I use Bitex hubs all the time and have a blog on them here (www.ryanbuildswheels.co.uk/in-depth-bitex-bicycle-hubs/) ; I think they're great! That said Hope's hubs are also excellent and won't let you down; my most used brand of hub outside of Bitex.
