Hopper fly patterns are as common as a grasshopper in a wheat field. This pattern, called the Mr. Peanut Hopper is easy to tie, impossible to sink, durable, and pretty good at catching fish. Don’t say ‘no’ to Mr. Peanut.

Great fly and even better narration. I rarely listen and often skip through most tying videos to the key points, but I found myself pleasantly entertained and watched and listened the whole time. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Brendan, thanks so much for taking the time to share this with me. That late summer hopper bite seems to be somewhat of a universal, it seems. I've chatted a bit with Peter Morse, not sure if your familiar with him, and he has said that some of the trout fishing has gone down hill near his home by the Blue Mountains in Leura, AU. Glad to hear that you're still finding plenty of fish. Thanks again!

Mate, greetings from the antipodes. Sensational video, first time I've laughed out loud at a fly tying vid. Love the hopper pattern, I've been using a variation of this in New Zealand on big rivers with great success this year. I like it because you can fish a heavy double nymph rig under if there's nothing on the surface (if you can avoid knocking yourself unconscious trying to cast it). Keep up the good work and tight lines, Craig.

Hey, Craig. Thanks for the nice words, and I'm glad I didn't put you to sleep. I could use a little antipode about now with our winters and the spectacular water you guys have over there. Amazing fish in incredible surroundings...and no snow or cold at the present moment! I love foam for so many things, because it's unsinkable and extremely durable. I've watched a couple of your videos, and it looks like a ton of fun. Thanks again, Justin.

Hi Justin, thanks for watching glad you enjoyed them, no shortage of water or fish over here, you don't have to go far to find solitude. I've been a bit slack on video production recently, computer comes a poor second to a day on the water. Cheers, Craig

+Joe Marquez Hi Joe, I don't really sell flies, and this fly pattern isn't sold commercially. There are lots of great hopper and terrestrial patterns though. I would talk to a local fly shop on the waters you are planning on fishing and get what they recommend. Feel free to shoot us a line at our website, toflyfish.com, if you ever have any questions about fly fishing. Glad you like the pattern!

Great hopper ! how good is the zap a gap glue ?
@toflyfish
@toflyfish 6 жыл бұрын
Hey David, it's great! I use it on pretty much every pattern I tie since it makes the pattern bombproof. I use a few other glues and lacquers, but I use this the most. It's also perfect on the water if you get a cut. I use brushable, so you can clean the cut and then close it up. In a pinch, it's saved my bacon more than once. Disclosure: I'm not a doctor. Thanks for the comment!

+PRACERZ Hey thanks, good sir. Truth be known, I got the foam about ten years ago, and I bought a TON of it. I haven't seen the strips anywhere since then. You can get the sheets from a few places. For example, Fly Fish Food has some. It's called "Two-Tone Fly Tying Foam". If you Google that, you'll find it. You can also glue sheets together to make your own color combinations. Thanks again, and glad I could provide a bit of entertainment...!

Have you caught trout on this fly?
@toflyfish
@toflyfish 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Payton. I have caught some warm water species on this pattern, but by far and away, I have caught mainly trout on this pattern, particularly brown trout. I have also found that at times smacking the fly outside of the trout's sight window or moving the fly on moderately-flowing water will draw fish to the fly more so than if you just drifted it over them. I've also had good success with this fly on private trout lakes, but that's kind of cheating anyway--a lot of fun though. Thanks again!

Great tie, really enjoyed it. What kind of camera you used to make the video?
@toflyfish
@toflyfish 7 жыл бұрын
Hey NCA, glad you enjoyed it! I use a Panasonic HC-x920 for my tying videos. It doesn't do 4k, but it's still HD. If you don't need sound, you could probably get a better camera (4K) for a bit cheaper. However, the camera has been a pretty solid camera for the price, and it can still be used with lavalier mics, etc. Hope that helps. Thanks again!

Hope you're doing well, Tomas! It depends on the hook length, for example, 1x, 2x, or 3x. On this pattern in the video, it's a #6 2x Tiemco 5262. toflyfish.com/hopper-fly-pattern-mr-peanut-hopper/ Hope that helps!

Thanks for taking the time to chime in! I make sure that pretty much all of the patterns on my site/channel are fish catchers. I don't really have a bunch of flies that I've never fished. If I do, I try to let people know. This fly has caught everything from bluegill/small trout to musky. So, rest assured, it will do just fine in a few different color combos. I like this pattern as a general overall hopper. I like a few other larger terrestrials as well, but I don't think fish are that selective when they get on the hopper bite. Love to hear your thoughts on other patterns and/or fishing situations. Thanks again!
