HORDEN - How was things allowed to go this far ?
Who can answer this question. An ex mining village on the North East Coast of England that has seen itself go from a tight knit close community to a crumbling village with massive unemployment and crime.
Maybe a New Train Station is a start of things to come, highly doubt it though.

I had to move up to Peterlee when i was 12. 5 minutes walk to Horden where i worked......coming from the rural midlands it was a shock. The only thing we had in common was that we were poor too. When i was 16 i got a job at a place in Horden called Maybelts.....really enjoyed that place, great people and great place to work....even though the pay was poor. We used to do overtime on a saturday morning 8 till 12.30, we used to have the food run at break time....Meat slices and stottie cake sarnies. We used to finish early on a Friday afternoon and pile in the pub which was about 20 yards away from Maybelts....Trophy bitter, many pints of, cards, etc etc....used to love it and on Saturday night we would hit the town and sometimes hire a mini bus into Newcastle or Middlesbrough. Great bunch of people at Maybelts....i worked ther from 1979 until 1983......then i left to go back to the midlands, more jobs and double the pay. I made some good friends in Horden and peterlee. It's true what they say Northern people are much more friendly than southerners on the whole. I could not stand Maggie Thatcher and the conservative stuck up twats but Horden pit had to close because of the environmental catastrophy that was created dumping millions of tonnes of coal waste into the sea. When i was 13 i used to collect the coal waste, one sack full at a time put it over my bike frame and push it all the way up the beach banks to peterlee Braithwaite road....about killed me, hard life but some happy days. Best wishes to Horden and Peterlee, i genuinely hope the governments plough money into your towns because you deserve it. If any of my ex collegues at Maybelts read this, God bless you....salt of the earth. David.

I worked in a butcher’s shop for year in Horden before leaving to join the army in the early 1970s All I can say is that the Local people were down to earth types Nobody had anything but most of the people had good hearts And its good to look back on those days There was an old couple who lived in seventh street When delivering meat to their house they would always invite me In for a cup of tea and a piece of cake ‘ as I said nobody had anything But this old couple were very kind to a butcher’s boy on a cold northern morning They will be long dead now though meeting people like that makes this world a better place ……

Thanks for making and sharing this. Broke my heart to see it - born and bred in Peterlee, my parents' graves look down upon the streets you've filmed. I left England in 1980 - wow - that ripped my heart and soul out. Unforgiveable.😢😢

Hard working families taking a pride in there homes have been forced to move out by a few people who make there ives a misery with drugs, drink, load music and anti social behaviour, not taking any pride in the houses they rent and live in .... downward spiral creating no go areas

There's nobody "hard working" living in fifth or seventh Street nowadays. Those days are long gone. It's actually pretty quiet round there these days since no one lives there and smackheads are usually pretty quiet. It's the alkies and coke heads who make all the racket.

Myself and my family lived in this village for so many generations and it does feel forgotten and sometimes baron, my grandad and few of my uncles worked in the mines and played for Horden RFC, my dad currently plays for the club now Horden and Peterlee, the Thatcher government destroyed us and forgot us since. I agree with the new station and it finally coming to be open on Monday, let's hope it does bring something back here.

Was it this town that advertised for investors to come and buy houses and refurbish them ? But sadly the tenants wrecked the houses and didn't pay the rent in some instances. What was the price about 1000 pound ? Sad to see such disrepair when many are homeless, especially now as we are nearly in 2022.

I have lived here all my life and it's soul destroying to witness, what has been allowed to happen here. The place is a shadow of what it used to be. The streets are now bandit country and people are scared to move at night. It's an absolute shame that the once tight knit community is no longer. I imagine the streets will be demolished soon and the vermin will move closer to the community making things even worse. It's a crying shame those houses will be demolished as they are good solid buildings that have stood almost 100 years. Great video. Thumbs up!!

There's still good people in horden , it ain't all bad. I live in the numbered streets , not so many neighbours is true , but the ones I've met are good honest people . Sure the place has issues , but don't slag everybody off, there's a lot of people trying hard to make a go of their lives , and not a lot of help from government, the place needs a bit of faith and investment,

I'm from the south and went to horden beach, this beach is not a patch on the beaches in south, no sand just rocks and pebbles, it was very neglected, dirty no public conveniences or bins to use, and came away with black dirty feet which was dirt that took days to wash off, durham county council needs to put some much needed money into maintaining the beaches here, down south we pay higher council tax but the beaches are well looked after and amenities aplenty.
@DominicWade

Horden Beach was used as a dumping ground for colliery waste but nature has been gradually cleaning the beach up, there is black deposits in places, Horden Beach is not meant to for tourists (at this stage) due to its past and also it is not easy to access. The only good beach that Durham County Council has is Seaham Beach. Most of the other good beaches are found north in places like Roker, Seaburn, South Shields or south in Seaton Carew, etc.
@Ellisano
@Ellisano 2 жыл бұрын
You pay more council tax but the average wage is much higher down south. The mining industry in the north propped the country up for years then when it eventually was seen as financially unfeasible the plug was pulled and the middle finger given as a thank you. The dirty feet you had may aswell have been the blood and sweat of the local miners so tread carefully when sharing a comment on places like this.

As someone who invests in property it's not financially viable to invest in this area even at such cheap prices. Vandalism and non payment of rents makes these properties a cost rather than an investment and there is little or no capital growth in this area. It's a shame because the houses are well built.

Shame really. The closure of the pits decimated a lot of the villages such as this one and also nearby Easington. Poverty and crime have taken over; also ruthless landlords that do not care for their tenants and some of those tenants do not care for their surroundings and the houses they live in, hence the rubbish. But there is hope even in places like Horden. The new rail station is a start. On the end of Seventh Street, a house has been converted into a community centre called Horden Hub House, they do some amazing work for the people of Horden and surrounding areas - www.eastdurhamtrust.org.uk/hordenhub.html there is also Horden Youth and Community Centre that do a lot of activities ranging from IT classes to fitness activities. So there are pockets of hope in what is a forgotten place; more work still needs to be done, especially in the numbered streets.
