Thanks for the review pointing out a rather crucial problem. I hoped you to walk through this Balanced Input Mode though, it looked very cool and I wanted to hear what you think about that feature. When it's unchecked, you can use the dpad sensitivity feature. It looks like a great way to get rid of accidental diagonal inputs.

We psychologically associate light with cheap because cheap controllers historically were light. Light should be considered good. The lighter the better.

Just a reminder the Hori has a Firmware Update that fixes the D-Pad issue I've come to find. Great review all around

They should add microswitches for the D-Pad as well. It makes no sense that you leave out microswitches for the most important part of the controller. It's 2021, and the membrane D-Pads are outdated. They get mushier and loose with time. That was one thing I was honestly looking forward too, and I must say I'm not happy.

All of my diagonal inputs dropped on the controller until I manually installed the controller firmware, and I dont mean in the HORI software. It's a separate download link. Now it works well and doesn't drop any noticeable inputs. Definitely not plug and play out of the box with auto installing drivers. I'm not saying it will make you enjoy the controller as much as you want to, but it did fix all of my issues.

I was playing Alpha 2 with this and I had dropped inputs on the D-pad as well. I didn't know what the issue was until you pointed it out. Always a life saver to the wallet you are. . I tested it through the HORI app and i had the re-centering problem itself. I loved the original Fighting Commander and i still use it religiously especially for its turbo function. Mine's going back to Amazon. Man disappointed because Hori makes great fight sticks...but this one was truly disappointing.

Good stuff, as an analog stick user the notched design should help make my inputs more precise. Is the dead zone for the stick big tho?

Hi! Have you tried the PlayStation version of this? I got the PC/Xbox one and it worked great after the update, but I've read the PS version has issues with diagonals. I was thinking this happened to this version as well so I'm not sure if I should get it out not....

Strange. I don't have any problems when it comes to d-pad position reset. I had some issues on day one but I installed the update and now it's perfect I think... Edit: I tested this pad in T7 for a day or two and I came to a conclusion that the d-pad is inferior to previous fighting commander. Having problems when it comes to wave dash and GS with AK on player 2 side.

I lend some guests this controller and they are not fighting game people so they were smashing like crazy, the circle button now stick a bit, what can I do?

what is the best d pad controller out for Xbox series s and ps4 ? Please note , i love the genesis 6 button controller and looking to replace my series s and ps4 due to lack of comfort. I bought 2 of these and I regret NOT watching this vid before I bought them. He's correct about how the D-pad resets at the bottom so doing a a double quarter circle motion is a pain the the ass. I ended up trading them both in and bought the PowerA Fusion Wired Fightpad for Xbox One and I love it. The PowerA Fusion cost $10 more but it's worth it and excellent for the SF 30th Anniversary Collection.

I'm so glad you posted this I play Tekken 7 with Lei Wu Long and there are lot of funny movements to be affective and i thought it was network lag too switch controllers and moves worked fine Then I realized it's this controller Didn't know what it was doing but now I do It was the dpad Thanks

The Dpad is a shame, this video shined some light on what was happening to me, I changed the deadzone on the Dpad and that help my blocking problem.

I got my controller today I like it a lot the D-pad issue won’t affect me personally because I use analog stick for fighting games but for my d pad users I can understand the disappointment in this controller

I legit haven't run into this issue myself, what kind of settings did you put into the profile you were using?? I changed the d-pad sense to be one less sensitive on the diagonals and it works as I think it's intended, I hope you have a rare defect.

While I understand its problems and that it feels cheap but it must feel really cheap to say that the 49.99 tag is expensive for all the features it does have including a Kailh microswitch, a dac , and etc. What price do you think it should be?

Hopefully it's even better than the Commander 4, which is great in its own right.

I have been using it for 5 hours in Tekken 8, practicing combo's and some ranked matches. Honestly, the D-pad seems to have been fixed I guess because I'm not getting wrong input movements or missing movement checks. Dunno if others have better experiences as well. I got the Xbox series X/S version. Installed the driver through the HORI software and jumped straight into the game. (Just saw the update video after posting this :P )

The Razer Raion also fucked the d-pad up. I expected this by now.

Hey, I think the issue was fixed with a firmware update. I can't reproduce at all. Sadly, the d-pad is still garbage. Still using the controller because of the 6 face buttons though.

Yeah, HORI really dropped the ball on this one. I'm the same Kevin who reviewed the app, for the record, and I posted two separate videos about this controller: one to showcase the issues with button mappings, one to showcase a "workaround" that will make the controller somewhat more usable for some people. Sadly, HORI seems to have a really poor reputation as far as apps go, but I emailed HORI directly and did get a response: "Dear Kevin, Thank you for contacting HORI USA. We apologize for the inconvenience with your Fighting Commander OCTA. Regarding your inquiry, currently we are preparing the firmware update for the issue you are experiencing. The update will be posted on our official website, but we will reach out to you directly with more information once the firmware update is available. We apologize for the inconvenience and sincerely appreciate your patience. Thank you very much. HORI USA " What I find interesting is that they're insinuating in their reply that the button mapping issue is a firmware issue with the controller, rather than an issue with the app. We'll see how true that is. I honestly haven't bothered really using the controller in any games, and I don't intend to keep it if I'm not able to do a full button remapping at some point.

Hori should make a Fighting Commander Octa controller for the PS3, PS4, PS5 and the Nintendo Switch.

My controller didn't have this issue, but I didn't like it anyway. Dpad is too big and tough to press. I got it used for very cheep so I'm not really mad and I'll probably use it for casual Sega Saturn gaming.

Does anyone know, when a PlayStation version can be expected? I really can‘t wait, die issue with the dpad doesn‘t affect me because I’ve always been a thumbstick player, I only use the dpad for dashing… Also, I don‘t intend to use it claw style and I don‘t mind the „hollow“ and „cheap“ feeling for the price… Otherwise: What‘s a good alternative that also has the same quality of clicky buttons and also an octagonal thumbstick? And yeah, shoulder buttons instead of triggers?

I hate having to tweak hardware with software especially if said hardware has poor default settings. Turns me off from wanting to buy the hardware. We desperately need a new controller manufacturer w/commercial or industrial level robustness...I'm thinking arcade-level precision and durability

The problem with the dpad I never had. It may be a problem with the Xbox one because I’ve used mine for all types of fighting games and it works great on pc.

Thanks for the review, my issue with this controller just by looking at it was the D-pad design, I prefer separate buttons for each direction on a pad, like they are on a ps4 controller. Also, you can tell that whoever engineered this pad has no idea how does fighting games work and their inputs but they sell it as a "Fighting game" pad.

If Hori make it for PS4/PS5 and Nintendo Switch and correct the mistake with the D-pad and program app.

I checked Balanced Input Mode and it fixed it for me. You must have got a dud. I had the same issue until I checked it off. Almost returned it! Great review otherwise.

The faculty d-pad won't effect me. I'll be using the analog. It does be arriving from Amazon within a couple hours so I'll come back and leave another comment

Biggest issue for me on this is that it has a dang analog stick!!! The D-Pad had to be smaller to compensate for a useless analog stick that is just going to get in the way!

I learnt how to play SF6 on this controller and it is now busted, I can't play with a regular ps5 controller so I have essentially boxed myself in here. I can't justify getting another for it to break again. I can't buy any wired pads as compatibility is limited with ps5. The controller is great it's awesome until it stops working

the dpad on my controller literally broke after 2 weeks of use, I was playing normally and it snapped somehow, now all of my inputs are fucked because of that. Never buying a Hori controller again
