Double board certified OBGYN and REI, Dr. Natalie Crawford, explains what normal hormone levels are and what to know if yours are abnormal. She explains the menstrual cycle in detail and what your hormone levels should be during different phases of your cycle. Hormones can be a hard topic and it's important to know if your levels are normal especially if you are trying to conceive.
Questions answered:
How do the brain and ovaries work together?
What happens in a normal cycle?
What is a cycle day 3 lab and what should the numbers be?
What happens when you start to run out of eggs?
What are signs of low ovarian reserve?
Can you do IVF if you have premature ovarian insufficiency?
What could a short cycle mean?
Why does the timing of testing your hormone levels matter?
What is a normal progesterone level?
What if you are on the birth control pill?
What is hypothalamic amenorrhea?

The question is, how do you find a health care provider who knows to check it all and focuses on your issues properly

In US doctors are bad, tricky. They never will tell you! I found doctor overseas and she told me fist done HyCoSy ultrasound for fallopian tubs, then check sperm. Then she asked blood lab numbers and she told me take supplements for Fsh and LH. That’s we are pregnant. In US when I went to clinic they just started with high dose IVF then I got polyps and embryo didn’t develop, we lost our money. Never I will go any fertility clinic in US, anymore.

Hi Natalie, thank you very much for these informative videos! I have learned a lot from you, you have an ability to spread this kind of information in an easy, understandable way and the fact that you do it for free it shows how amazing of a person you are. So, thank you again! I am sort of an enigma myself as my RE has called me, I still don't have a diagnosis but so far everything seems to indicate I may have a pituitary adenoma or a mutation in the FSH receptor. So my CD3 labs show FSH 16.3 mUI/mL , E2 18.4 pg/mL, AMH 3.85. This was in May, I did repeat these labs recently and my AMH dropped to 2.85 (not concerning as far as I have been told), my FSH increased a bit to 17 and my E2 continues to stay low at 20.9 pg/mL. Due to the fact that my AMH is normal for my age (turning 30 in a couple weeks), I have fairly regular cycles (28-30 days) and positive OPK tests, they ruled out perimenopause and POI. Have you had patients with similar markers? I am going crazy not knowing what is going on. I had doctors telling me I might be able to conceive only with IVF, others who were a lot more optimistic than that. But no definitive answer. My last doctor suggested monitoring follicles via ultrasound while keep trying naturally and if months go by with no result, then try IUI first. He did not seem too concerned with my FSH seeing as everything else seems to be normal.

Thank you so much for making these videos! I jsut started trying and had a chemical pregnancy. I'm 26 so I was really discouraged, but after binging a lot of your content I feel so much less anxiety going into this next cycle and have a better understanding of how everything works and how many ways it can go wrong! I am staying hopeful, but I feel prepared just in case we're unlucky again to know what to ask my doctor in the future. Your videos are invaluable thank you!

Family Medicine PA here - wondering when/how to approach checking hormone labs when patients cycles are irregular and they have no idea when next period is coming? I feel that’s a common concern I hear in the office and the request to check hormones comes when there is an irregularity rather than a typical regular cycle? Any help would be wonderful. Thanks for the awesome content!

Thank you so much Dr Crawford! I have learned so much about my cycle and fertility from your channel, and really feel empowered through this information! My question is on the effect of HBC pills in regulating the cycle and triggering ovulation AFTER stopping it, especially for people with PCOS. I just stopped the pill after 13 years and had a regular cycle of 33 days each for 3 months, but now in the 4th cycle it is very long (45+ days and still no period. Did the HBC effect just wear off, how long does that regulating effect last? Additionally, perhaps you could talk about the effects of SSRI usage on high prolactin, and therefore ovulatory problems. I know I am so hungry for information and videos but I have yet another question: Could the body ovulate but NOT get the period or get pregnant? Why would that happen? Thank you, and hope you're well!

I love your videos and watched them through my fertility journey! I’ll be 26 next month and got diagnosed with PCOS in January. I did two rounds of letrozole (5mg) combined with metformin (2000mg) in April and May of this year. I ended up conceiving twins (babies #2 and #3 - I also have a four year old) my second round. Unfortunately, I miscarried baby B at 8 weeks gestation, but I am now 22 weeks & 5 days along with baby A. Baby B was measuring 3 days behind baby A and his/her heart rate was almost 30 beats slower than baby A (the sac also looked pretty small in my opinion when compared to baby A as well as my first pregnancy). Anyway, this long comment was to get to this: when I lost baby B I didn’t know vanishing twin syndrome was a thing and went it the internet to try and gain some knowledge on it. I was wondering if this was something you’d be able to do a video on in the future? Thanks in advance!

Can FSH get worse after initial fertility treatments? I had good FSH numbers (5-10) before any fertility treatments. But after 4 months of treatments (medicated + IUIs), it has creeped into the starting to be in low reserve range (10-19). My estradiol is increasing in conjunction with the increasing FSH.

the right answer is that your hormones have different normal zones on different days, but as far as "baseline" labs - days 2-4 are all the same for most people

Hello Dr Crawford. Thank you for doing these videos, you seem to have a way of telling me what I need to know when I need to know it in such a calming way. On my last cycle I had a chemical following IUI. My labs on CD4 were E2= 88, LH= 5.8, PRG= 1.1, FSH= 8.8. My AMH had been tested earlier this year at 13.4 pmol/l (I’m in Canada) and my AFC is usually between 18-26 (last cycle it was 21). We did a medicated IUI using 5mg letrozole and 75iu puregon and I had 5 large follicles on insemination day. After the cycle failed my doctor said I probably have an egg quality issue because my AMH is low for my AFC count. Does this sound accurate?
