The United States Army Field Band is the premier touring musical representative for the United States Army. Its four main components, the Concert Band, Soldiers' Chorus, Jazz Ambassadors, and The Volunteers, travel thousands of miles each year presenting a variety of music to audiences throughout the nation and around the world. Public concerts, school assemblies, clinics, festivals, and radio and television appearances are all part of the Army Field Band's schedule.
This educational clinic series is designed to share knowledge with America's young musicians and to aid teachers by focusing on specific musical areas. New educational materials are added to our collection each year.

At 10:17 the use of a stop mute is mentioned. The narrator says it produces the same sound as using the hand to stop a horn. I have a Humes & Berg stop mute like the one shown and I disagree. It produces a different sound. If the entire horn section is playing a stopped passage, it's best to agree on whether all of you will use your hand or your stop mute.Does anyone know of another manufacturer of stop mutes? If there is one, maybe it's tone is closer to that of the hand.

I played cornet four years--2nd thru 5th grades and horn six years--7th thru 12th. I wasn't bad. But this would have helped SO much. In my era we had one band director, who taught each student how to play his/her instrument. Not enough time, and the director couldn't possibly be expert on so many different instruments. I had the opportunity to play with a couple of different orchestras, composed of students as well as professionals, but in those one was expected to KNOW all one needed. Today's world is far different and far better for music students. But I wouldn't trade my experience for love nor money. Those are both fleeting. An appreciation for music is forever.

Looks like a "fun and exciting" group of waldhornists, as exemplified by their frequent smiles and chuckles. But, as it is a didactic video, where was Prof. Schmutzig and his hysterically famous horn? And I would have liked to have heard some of his infamous studies performed here also. Overall, a good and useful show. But I would like to have heard more fire in the konzertstuck.

One way to answer the question about what instrument you play is - in a James Bond voice - "Horn. French horn." I spent a weekend with Joe Lovinsky once. Over dinner, he told an interesting (and disturbing) story about how his name surprised a racist community in Texas where he'd been hired sight-unseen. Didn't matter that he was fresh out of Juilliard, a great player and great guy - he was forced to leave.

Yeah it's like a brass version of an improved clarinet. That being said, the sax isn't really a brass instrument in the sense that it produces the sound via the reed, not buzzing lips, as do the proper brass instruments. It's more of a woodwind ( the objection that it's built in brass doesn't apply because flutes are also metal nowadays )
@jacobfraser8930
@jacobfraser8930 9 жыл бұрын
Kyler Keck But when you say that, the saxophone was only born out of the need for an instrument that was easily able to "fill in" for the horn section of the orchestra, which at that point still hadn't fully developed the ability to play a chromatic scale. So Adolphe Sax, who perfected the bass clarinet, basically just shortened the instrument to make the Eb alto, which was able to play with the horns in orchestras (at least until horn got rotary valves).So either instrument could be considered the "link" between the sections, but the logic behind your statement above is that if I make an instrument that uses brass embouchure, but is made from wood with a rotary valves, that doesn't make it a link between the sections does it?
