Wondering about the Hornady Lock-N-Load AP? In this video I show you the entire unboxing process, a review of press and parts, mounting and assembling the press. You'll see everything needed to get your press to load ammunition except die and shellplate installation.
*Update: In addition to the steps listed, you'll need to drop on the primer pickup tube, screw on the shield tube, and then snap the plastic top cap in place to finish priming system assembly. I'll show that in the next video. Thanks alzathoth for pointing this out!

Thanks in advance for your video series on the Hornady LnL AP. One thing that Hornady recommends is, cleaning all components ie: rifle and pistol rotors, powder measure, etc. before using them. All your video series are very informative. I thoroughly enjoy my AP press. I load 45acp, 357, and 556 on the press. I use my Hornady Single Stage for all my large rifle cartridges. Thanks for all you do.

Pretty good press, I have been using one for close to 5 years now. I probably get a little heavy handed when it comes to priming and I have broken the main toggle link that the handle threads into(Hornady replaced it for free, no questions). There is also a good sized divot in the aluminum frame where contact occurs with the priming punch. My fix for that has been to tap a used small primer cup into the divot with a small brass hammer. The case feeder is a life saver and I like the roller handle I bought from Inline Fabrication. The press is pretty low maintenance, the base plate will work loose over time but two Allen screws tighten right up.

New to the progressive press scene-been a single stage loader for over 10 years. I appreciate this video as an overview and primer to loading. I found this system(even with gouging going on...) to bee about half as expensive as the blue presses for caliber changes. Although I have zero experience with either the red or blue presses(been on the green ones)-I am already impressed by the package and Hornady's customer service. I wasn't going to wait for 4 months for a Dillon, although will probably buy after the stupidness (if it ever does?). I am happy with Hornady so far and can't wait to load alot. I would recommend the mr bulletfeeder and a case feeder(there are 3d printed versions now). Thanks Gavin !!!

Top tip = get large boxes and keep pistol dies wiith pistol powder etc Same for rufle dies etc. COMPLETELY clear loading table including cleaning out powder dispenser before moving to another calibre NEVER PUT PISTOL POWDER IN RIDLE CARTRIDGES.

Great video Gavin. I have the same press and have loaded thousands of round of both pistol and rifle. Once it is set up the key is getting the indexing correct. On my press the indexing was a hair off and drove me crazy. You have to make really small paw adjustments to get it correct. Another key to smooth running is keep the press clean. If even a small amount of powder or dirt gets under the shell plate, primer feed etc. it can cause problems such as indexing improperly or primers not seating correctly. I believe overall it's a great press and I believe all presses have their nuisances.

+1 for Steve's comment below. I'm getting ready to start reloading and have been researching the best bench setups to use. I think yours is by far the best design I've seen. Adjusting the pawls can be confusing enough. But it is often made more difficult because most shellplates come with their ball bearings protruding too far out. So when the shellplate approaches the correct position, the ball bearings grab their detent holes in the subplate. This causes the shellplate to lurch forward. That creates more confusion (did the pawls or the ball bearings finalize the index?) and causes powder to pop out of small as well as nearly full cases. Tap the ball bearings further into the subplate (eg with a brass punch)so that the shellplate settles *quietly* into position. Now you know whether pawls need adjusting, and powder popping is eliminated. If you tap the ball bearings in too far, turn the shellplate over and tap them back out :)

Great Video. This has helped me decide which press to buy. I have decided to learn reloading for two reasons: 1) try to bring down cost for ammo, 2) I live in California and the new laws will prevent me from buying ammo online. I figure I will buy all the components (brass, bullets, primers, etc.) online and make my own.

I own the same press and love it. It does have its issues though. Some times primers jam up, getting it indexed correctly can be a problem, and changing it the primer bolt thing on the underside can be a pain. Minor complaints compared to the thousands of rounds I've loaded up.

I once had a Hornady Lock-N-Load AP. I could never trust it to prime the cases. Never. I frequently had to disassemble the press to clean out the powder that kept sifting out of the empty primer pockets. I spent considerable time on the phone talking to Hornady's tech support and even they couldn't hep me to get it to work correctly.

Only certain parts - some of the Hornady LNL AP parts are somewhat prone to rust, so it's actually a good idea to spray down lightly with WD-40 or similar, wipe excess off with rag to prevent corrosion/rust - completed cartridge bin bracket, metering inserts (not internal), and other small parts.

Gavin told you right. Another option is to buy a Hornady PTX (powder through expander). It goes in the powder measure assembly in place of the standard spacer/drop tube. It expands the case mouth, freeing up a station that would otherwise hold an expander die.

I only de-grease the parts that need it. (under shellplate powder-contacing parts etc.) - why? Some hornady parts are bare steel and therefore susceptible to corrosion. In fact, it's a good idea to spray such parts with a product like WD-40 or Ballistol and wipe off the excess (except the parts I mentioned).
