I don’t know if you guys mentioned it, but one fact I think is funny about the 7-08 is that it’s a case of “coming full circle” back to the 7X57 Mauser. The 30-06 came from lengthening the 7x57, then the 308 came from shortening the 30-06, then the 7-08 came from necking down the 308.

You d think this would tell us something huh? Lol I DO see a place need or want for all of our lovely cartrdges.. But 9 times out of 10... 7 08 is gonna be hard to beat. Numbers Vs shoot ability.. even as a 1000k yard gun... I love listening/endulge to gun/ammo talk/arguments... but it's HARD for me to prove to myself that 7mm08 can be beat

I have to admit that the "little" 7-08 has won me over. For almost 30 years I was an advocate of "180gr 30-06 is THE deer cartridge, everything else is a compromise." Well, when my kids were getting into hunting, I compromised and bought a light recoiling 7-08 for them. My intention was to download a 120gr bullet to reduce recoil and slowly work up as they got older. By the time they were 14 and 15, they were shooting full power 140gr loads. I watched as this "little" cartridge dropped deer after deer. I just couldn't believe that a smaller bullet was working this well, so I had to take it out myself. I found that the shorter overall length of the firearm made it much easier to use in a treestand, and the lighter weight was much easier to pack around the mountains and hills of Appalachia. It was just as capable of taking the same animals that my 06 was taking, and with about the same authority as well. Eventually, I started taking the "little" 7-08 more often than my 06. So I did what most of us here would have done, used it as an excuse to buy another firearm. And that firearm was chambered in 7mm-08. Guess I compromised🤣

I have nothing against old cartridges, but I am definitely ok with modern improvements. I applaud your story. Makes me wonder how many people are like that out there right now? How many are rejecting cartridges based simply on a bias? And how many could allow themselves to get an upgrade?
@slimjimmy229
@slimjimmy229 8 ай бұрын
@jmanswat2457 My bias came from old technology. I once saw a deer that was hit with a 100gr bullet out of a .243 Win., manufactuer unknown. It was a quartering to shot and the bullet hit the ball of the shoulder. It blew up on impact and didn't penetrate into the chest cavity. After seeing that as a kid, I was always afraid of using the "small caliber" cartridges.

@userJohnSmith High impact velocity and soft cup and core bullets don't go together very well. This was a deer that my great uncle shot. If I recall correctly, he said the shot was taken at less than 50 yards. I've personally used a 165gr Sierra Gameking out of my '06 that had less than 3" of penetration on a high shoulder shot at 25 yards. It hit the ridge of the scapula, came completely apart, and the base of the bullet was resting against the shattered spine. I'm not going to say that the Gamekings are bad bullets. They are exceptionally accurate and have devastating terminal performance at extended ranges. Inside of 100 yards, you're much better off going with a Pro hunter though. It's a much harder bullet. I've seen the 180 pro hunter go through a shoulder joint, penetrate the length of a 200lb buck, and still have the energy to break the femur where it came to rest

180 grain 30-06 isn’t nearly as good a deer cartridge as a 25-06 with a fast 100 or 110 grain bonded bullet. So ya I’m a believer that 7mm08 is a great deer caliber!

I'm glad you guys did this one. Frankly, I"d like to see this round become more popular (and less expensive). In terms of rifle sales, I'm sure the .243 is more popular than the 7mm-08 (that's "oh eight" by the way). I think that's because a lot of men buy them for their kids and wives as low-recoil introductory rifles. I also think most .243s are bought for deer (rather than varmints), and I think 7mm-08 is a better choice. When my daughter turned 18, she was already familiar with guns and showed no signs of recoil sensitivity having already hunted deer with a 12ga. For her 18th birthday, she didn't get a .243, she didn't get a .308. She got a 7mm-08 as the best of both worlds. It could be that "old favorites" will be eclipsed in the coming years by the likes of the PRCs, but I think the 7mm-08 is a great choice (as does my kid).

I live in northern Ontario, Canada, and I do homesteading and live off the land when possible, so I rely on hunting to help put meat in the freezer. However, I am beginning to rethink my approach for my main hunting rifle that I use for whitetail, black bear and moose. With economy and efficiency being an important consideration for me, I need one rifle/cartridge that can handle all three of those game species up to 400yds. (usually much, much less), ammo and/or handloading components can't be expensive, and it has to be readily available. Additionally, I'm also a one-bullet hunter. Meaning, I use only one grain size/bullet type to hunt all three species, so a cartridge's ability to achieve that parameter is important to me too. Currently, I use a .30-06 as my main medium to large game hunting rifle. I have always been a .30-06 guy, and I absolutely LOVE .30-06, but as a subsistence homesteader I am beginning to rethink things in regards to myself and my ability to hunt well into the future. I'm currently in my early 40s, but one thing I need to be realistic about, and take into consideration, is my needs as I age into my 60s and 70s, and recoil may become one of those factors. The .30-06 is nothing for me to handle now, but things could change in another 20+ years...or less? So I'm starting to reconsider what my setup could be for the future. I have exhaustively poured over all the ballistics numbers and other data for a ton of cartridges, and honestly, 7mm-08 just seems to strike the right balance, and does everything I'd need it to do, but with mild recoil. Additionally, case and powder capacities are less than .30-06, so in addition to being more efficient, handloading costs would be a little less as well due to the fewer grains of powder required. Ammo and components for 7mm-08 are widely available, and are no more expensive than .30-06 (in my area anyway), and even in some unforeseen emergency I could still resize incredibly available .308 brass if need be. The more I look at it, the more 7mm-08 makes sense for my needs, and my potential needs heading into the future. It's just so hard grappling with the idea of giving up my .30-06. For so many reasons I consider it the best cartridge ever created. Especially with today's modern bullets and powders. However, maybe it's time to discover a new favourite? Only time will tell. Bottom line is: I really can't go wrong with either, and that's sort of the point. I know 7mm-08 can do everything I need, and I'm sure I'd learn to love it too. Perhaps a new rifle setup is in order. Might as well do it now rather than later before everything costs 2-3 times more...

@jfess1911
@jfess1911 9 ай бұрын
As you shorten the barrel, a larger diameter bullet will extract more energy from a given amount of powder. This is especially noticeable if you shoot the same weight bullets. The larger diameter bullet will be faster. It has to do with a larger area of bullet base to push against and, for a given barrel length, a larger volume inside the barrel to allow complete powder combustion and extraction of energy. It gets a little more complicated once you start talking about longer ranges, because sometimes the smaller diameter bullet will have a higher BC and catch up in energy over a great enough distance (or more accurately, the higher BC bullets LOSES less energy over distance). To use another, more extreme example, the 243 Win, 308 Win, and 358 Win are based on the same case, but 358 would extract the most energy and make a better close range cartridge against bears with an 18" barrel.

I love the heavier bullets myself. I hand load the 162gr sst just shy of 2600fps for long range plinking. I have used this bullet to take a couple of whitetails here in the eastern woods. Both of the deer dropped. However, my preferred choice for woods hunting is the 154gr, flat base interlock loaded to about 2650fps. It holds together better than the sst at the close range distances I hunt and out penetrates the heavier sst. My youngest uses the 120gr Nosler ballistic tip loaded at 3000fps out of his 7-08. I don't believe he has ever had to track a deer yet. The problem with his load is the lack of penetration. We often find what's left of his bullet in the hide of the deer or resting inside the ribcage on a quartering shot. I'd rather have 2 holes myself, but I can't argue with his success either.

The 7mm-08 is a better hunting round than the 6.5cm. The 6.5cm was marketed for people who were enamored with the war and snipers - long range shooting- Ruger jumped all over it with the American Predator.. their slogan- 1,000 yards for $500- Sure but that is not hunting performance. The 120, 139, 140, 150.. grain bullets in the 7mm-08 makes it an amazing hunting caliber. It outperforms the .243- less recoil than the .308- Amazing accuracy if you hand load.

Most of the rifle mfrs have been chambering 708 in short barrel compact/junior rifles only… which has sold the 708 short. 708 outperforms 308 and 6.5CM and will become more popular if the rifle makers chamber for it and the ammo makers keep up with growing demand.

The 7mm-08 has a modern design chamber with a significant length of tight freebore (0.119" freebore at 0.2845"dia). The section of tight freebore is what modern cartridges (like the Creedmoors) and match chambers use to align the bullet with bore. The freebore has less than half the slop of the 308, which should make the 7mm-08 generally more accurate with factory ammo.

Enjoyed the podcast, thanks! I purchased a Sauer 100 Ceratech in 7-08 last year and have been impressed with the rifle and cartridge both. I hand load all my ammo and have yet to find a bullet it doesn’t shoot under 1 MOA. two pet loads are the 139 gr interlock with Big Game powder ( .6 MOA) and the Barnes 120 TTSX with H380 ( .3 MOA).

7mm-08 is underrated at it took me years to realize that. At recommendation of the internet, I loaded 120gr Nosler BT and chose H4350 powder. I get .45” 5 shot groups and S-D of 6 FPS running a relaxed 2900 FPS. Zero recoil, awesome performance on game. Hornady brass is a must. For regular recoil loads I choose the 139 interlock. I tried making it a magnum with 162 ELDX and it’s just not necessary for TX Hill country. The cartridge is flat-out a deer and hog getter.

Loved the podcast. I've been hunting with the 7mm-08 for close to 15 years now. Started with a Remington 7600 (I still kick myself for selling that gun), and currently use a Tikka T3 Lite. My favorite load is RL-15 behind a 139gr Hornady GMX. Haven't been able to find RL-15 for the past 3-4 years, so I switched to BL-C(2). The BL-C(2) pushes the bullets a little faster, but at the expense of a little bit of accuracy. I'm still sub-MOA at 100 yards, but the RL-15 was consistently sub 0.5 moa.

Metallic Silhouette competition was well covered by the shooting sports media in the late 70's , and to my recollection if I'm not mistaken , the 7mm08 was PRIMARILY discussed as a cartridge popularized by these shooters as an improvement on the STANDARD out of the box Match Winner ... the Remington Model 700 BDL Varminter , chambered by the factory in .308 Winchester . The ballistic advantages , coupled with slightly reduced recoil and shooter fatigue over the course of an event while maintaining more than adequate energy to knock down targets made it the new standard for those wanting an out of the box competitive rifle for this sport . I think that it was perhaps initially offered in the Model 700 BDL Varmint iteration as the first mass produced factory chambering of this cartridge .

Taking up hunting again after a 20 year pause. Bought a Howa 7mm-08 and a few boxes of Hornady Whitetail ammo and got a pleasant surprise to find it shooting near to half moa. The only limiting factor for long range kills is the 139 interlocks are a little hard at lower velocities, so am looking forward to trying some 154gr SSTs or 150gr ELDX reloads with H4350

@The Hornady Podcast Great video gentlemen, I want to thank you for reaffirming my choice for a very good "all around" general purpose hunting cartridge !! About 25-30 years ago I conducted online research to determine what the "best available cartridge" would be for me to use in a general purpose hunting rifle !! After several weeks of comparing ballistic charts, rifle types and styles, and the availability of several types and styles of factory ammunition specifically made with high quality hunting bullets, I came to the conclusion, that it would be almost impossible to beat the 7mm-08 Remington cartridge, in any one of the many quality rifles available at that time !! The rifle that I chose to purchase will, without a doubt, raise a lot of eyebrows, because, I chose the H&R Handi Rifle, a single shot breech loading rifle that was at that time distributed by New England Firearms, as my only center-fire hunting rifle, and to this day, I have never regretted that decision, because, it is an absolute "tack driver" with factory ammunition, as long as I do MY part !! Thank you all again, for making and posting this wonderful video !! p.s. As of this time, I have not had the opportunity to tryout any of Hornady's "World Renowned Hunting Ammunition", but, now that I am retired and have more free time, there are five specific 7mm-08 Remington loads that I am closely looking at, to change that scenario !!

+1 here for (seven O’ eight) If you build consider a couple of things. 708 works well with shorter barrels Also….if you favor the heavier bullets consider an 8-9” twist rate. I so wanted the 150eld-x to shoot well out of my 20” 1-9.5” twist barrel and they will not unfortunately. My best groups have come from Barnes TTSX 120gr (which at 2900+ fps absolutely rock the whitetail) and 140gr Berger VLD Hunt projectiles. Id love to have a threaded barrel to have suppressed as an option. In short…for 708 is a SUPERB option and way underrated. I get weary of hearing that it’s a cartridge for kids and small women. I don’t know where that came from. Maybe because you can, successfully, load it light if you choose. I’d love to shell out 65hundo for a custom 708. Id go proof research 20” sendero light 1-8.5, Ti action, Manners light stock with a good ole’ Timney 510. If it shoots 3/4 then pack your bags boys the search is over. I will have found my best girl. Thank you very much for the video. Im so grateful for this content. God Bless!

My 7-08 will launch higher BC bullets at a higher velocity than my 6.5 CM. The CM gets the hype while the 7-08 waves bye-byebye. This is a great cartridge for us seniors who's worn out bodies can be injured by those magnums. Plus, the rifles are generally lighter. The 7-08 lends itself perfectly for the young hunter's first rifle, and the geezer hunter's last rifle. Thanks for the vid. BTW, my pet hunting load launches a 120 gr. TTSX at 3300 fps. It is interesting to watch the different waves of cartridges. Late 90’s was all about huge cartridges that are overbore and now we are more about ballistics and efficiency. 200 fps would go from kids gun to grandpa’s gun to magnum performance. Bullets manufacturing has changed the needs and a “underpowered” rifle became the best to shoot and reminded hunters the three most important things. 1. Shot placement 2. Shot placement 3. Shot placement. Family has used copper for over 15 years with no issue. GMX and CX bullets have filled my freezer in multiple cartridges.

7mm-08 ("Oh-Eight"!) is underrated, especially when shooting suppressed. Shorten the barrel on a Tikka T3X Lite to 18" and add a suppressor, then load Superformance or dial up a handload with StaBall 6.5 to make up some of the velocity and you have a quiet, lightweight, compact, soft-recoiling solution at moderate ranges for anything short of dangerous game. A piece of that went through everything exiting the opposite sides rear leg and nicked the gut pouch. That bullet I never used again. Just too much damage. I went-to a soft point 140 and never had a problem. It is a dream to shoot with very soft recoil. I did a drive one year as a stander(shooter). I got three rapidly that day. Three shots three deer. 7-08 pretty much sells itself by word of mouth from users, it can punch a lot higher than people may think, and once they get one, very few will sell it, and you'll seldom see anyone saying they weren't a bit surprised with its performance on game, and on the range. I dumped 7RM, bought a 7-08 in about 1986, and a 338WM, shot more big stuff like moose and elk, with the 7-08, over a 35+ yr time period, go figure, it was what I was carrying when they appeared, never had an animal go down anything but PDQ. Never used anything but 140gr Partitions in it for hunting, ran 100gr to 168gr on the range, and cast bullets. It just works, easy to load for, great selection of guns. These days with the powders that are out there, like RL16 & Staball & N555, even RL26, it can perform a bit better than it used to and still surprises folk who try that out. Put a decent 140gr bullet, or even a 120-140gr monometal , go shoot whatever you want with it, it will do the job.

The 154gr SST is good for large deer with H4350 and a general purpose projectile is the 140gr Rem CorLokt and Varget. The rifle has a gold ring Leupold scope on it with the beautiful Sako timber stock. He is 19 now and its his favourite rifle to shoot. I am getting a little older now I was looking for a lighter little hunting rifle that will handle game up to Kudu here in South Africa out to maximum 250yards. I actually just picked one up like 6 weeks ago. Plan on handloading it like the rest of my rifles(6mm CM, 6.5CM, 308win, 30-06 spr). One thing that was super hard to find in terms of components was quality brass. Managed to get 100 pc lot of Starline so as soon as I get an optic for the rifle, load dev will begin. I do wish SRP brass was available for it as LR primers are nigh impossible to find in Canada, and in particular, my region. Just finished some optimal charge weight testing for my 6mm CM and found a sweet node with H4350 that gave me an SD of 4 and ES of 8 with a .351" group at 100 yards. Spitting out 2766 avg fps with a 22" barrel. Not blazing but I'll take the accuracy over extreme velocity.

Lapua makes excellent brass for 7-08. Usually available from Tesro in Ottawa. LR primers, I feel your pain brother. Same in western Canada.

My favorite deer cartridge. I load with Barnes 120s and Varget @3000 fps.
