i did this with my garden maple 2 years ago. It was very thick aproc 10 inch diameter. Now I'm training it. The root is doing very well. Thank you Peter I used your method and just went for it.

American Hornbeam WILL air layer well, I successfully air layered one that was about 8+ inches in diameter. However, they tend to take longer to actually root. Also their tough wood and muscling makes it very hard to peel the bark and scrape the cambium. Just takes a lot of elbow grease to ensure the cambium is totally gone and it should root just fine. Don't be afraid to harvest all the way into late-September/early-October (depending on how warm your climate is) to ensure you have enough roots. If not, wait till next year to harvest.

Peter, I wonder if you might have had more success with those deshojos if you didn't put them in the water trays and watered them normally? That peat mixture you had them in would've become saturated and provided no air for the new roots.

My work around for top heavy plastic pots filled with sphagnum is a little trench made with a small electric tiller.

Thanks Peter I love seeing the trees in the field being developed. I imagine the peat experiment may have failed because of the tray of water. Sphagnum moss seems to retain some air space even when it's soaking wet. Peat based soil ends up devoid of oxygen when it is to wet. Just my opinion but maybe it's worth another try. Sphagnum is pricey and I know you hate waste.

It's pretty cheap here I can get 8 to 12 q for around 5 bucks .when I mix my moss I put 1 cup pumice to one cup moss to create air pockets .

Fruit tree bonsai are the best of both "nice looking" and "useful". I'm hoping to grow some coffee trees and bonsai them.

well DUH I just figured out, I need to be using wire to tie the air layerings, have been using twine and string and it's a real bother! Thanks for the simple tip - wire definitely works better.

To reduce the amount of sphagnum since it's expensive, I combined coco peat, peat moss and sphagnum mix, thx to Peter they have high rate of success. Can't wait for the next one, thx Peter 👍.

That's not a bad idea at all. I tend to go all-in with the sphagnum, but it is indeed expensive -- and easy to run out of it unexpectedly!

My first their Layer was peat moss, I think Peter said you can also use regular soil might depend on the species of how easily it will root. Climate can also affect it if you're in a more tropical area easier to strike.

@@NerdyShawn Totally agree. Climate is definitely a factor. You can see folks in India, the Philippines and similar places literally using mud with fantastic results. Side note: don't confuse sphagnum moss with peat moss. It's a different animal when it comes to air-layering. Those threads make a difference. cheers.

Thanks Peter for your video... also thnaks for share experience of airlayering - 2 deshojo maple from a mother tree wich you have at your foregarden - remember the video where you cut the branch from a mother tree with succesful airlayer roots... it make me sad... last year i tried also airlayer and both i succes .... this year i hope will have full rootball and it will be start of my 1st airlayer bonsai maples :D Thanks a lot.... hope for better situation of Covid in England to estimate a trip to your Bonsai Center.... Great video. Is it ok to do this process with an already made bonsai and put a small flower pot around the base of the layering where the nabari would be with spag moss inside the pot and if so should i wrap the top of the flower pot maybe with plastic wrap or leave it open Thank u.

Thank you Peter. I watch this video every year just before I start to do my air layers. I have had mixed success up till now and I think you are probably right about the sphagnum moss. So this year my hornbeams and small leaf limes will get just moss. I have heard that Hawthorn is really tough to air layer and I have failed every time. Have you had any success with these?

Can you use other kinds of moss ground up? I may experiment with sphagnum and regular moss ground up to see if regular moss works because would be easier (and more sustainable) to source

i did air layering in your style but i used mix of coco peat and peat moss and it was successful although it was fig. i liked to use sphagnum moss but i cant find in local shop.

Fig tree will produce roots in literally anything, as long, as it has enough moisture. Even the average garden mud would do.

If you look for Orchid mix or Orchid Moss, it's usually just spahgnum moss but rebranded. Most places like Home Depot, Lowes, etc in the US sell it as Orchid Moss

I think you could experiment with planting airlayerings into peat, but not keep them in standing water. My experience is very limited, but I have no access to sphagnum, so i use peat. Some do die, but some hang on )

Master, today I started an experiment for a humble white mulberry, male. This fruitless tree has been in my yard and progressively shortened, a large gin was accidentally created when sword pruning and i enhanced it by peeling the bark to leave a small vein to feed a single branch. Under the condition that it doesnt die, Ill be starting an air layering on it and keeping the young tree sheltered for the first winter.

I have two Maples (Acer) in my garden. I don't know the type but one is yellow, the other red. Both are about ten feet tall. Does anyone know if I can use the top part of the air layered section to make bonsai, once it' s rooted? Most of the videos that I've seen show the bottom part used for bonsai and the upper part for a new feeder tree. Also, would coir work as well as sphagnum moss when layering? I'm a recent subscriber to this wonderful channel.

Have you tried growing Korean Hornbeam in the ground for air layering or do they not grow as well in the UK? I collect sphagnum moss from a boggy area at the edge of a pond not far from me. Costs nothing. Have you considered growing it yourself?

Question . . . when you cut off and collect an air layer, most of the time the bottom is not growing roots. The roots are forming on the side. Wouldn't it make sense to trim back the bottom (that is blunt), and put rotting powder on it too, when replanting?

I would love to try this. Is it necessary to use dried and rehydrated sphagnum moss, or can you use fresh sphagnum moss? I notice people doing this on KZfaq uses dried sphagnum moss, but perhaps it is only because it can be bought in stores? I happen to have access to wild sphagnum moss, can I use that directly or do I need to dry it first?

I’m pretty good at air layering and ground layering fruiting shrubs. I’ve had modest success with apple and no luck with maples. My technique seems to be the same as yours but something isn’t working. Any idea what I’m missing?

Hi Peter, great video. I have a question. I saw a video on another channel that said after you shape and re-pot a bonsai you should keep it in the shade for a month. Is this good practice??? Love the videos, keep up the good work.

Yes shade is fine - but if a tree is growing strongly then you don't need to keep it in the shade. Each situation is different - use your judgment

Let us suppose a tree with a trunk shaped like a "Y". I have seen you layer the two top forks of the tree. Does it work to layer the base and one (say) fork of the tree? This would put two layers in serial succesion. Would the lower layer kill the upper one? Thank you for all your videos, they have been a great help.

Yes the multiple method works well with the vigorous trees like Hornbeam and Maple but not so sure about Juniper

If you were to put two air layers on the same limb, the higher one would prevent the lower from rooting, unless there's enough foliage in between the cuts to provide nutrients to the one below. But in your case the air layer on the base would be supported by the uncut branch of the fork.

Peter, I know it has been asked before, but we haven't been able to find an answer. We know you use fresh sphagnum moss. Have you experimented with dried sphagnum moss? If so, what has been the result? Fresh sphagnum moss has been very difficult to find in the U.S., but dried is readily available. Is it viable?

for these long term air layers, do you ever take any time to make sure the moss is damp if you havent had rain? or is it totally unnecessary to worry about that?

If the moss is wet when applied and well wrapped in plastic it doesn’t dry out. You can leave it alone for months without worrying.

That's the thing with air layering- the tree is driving sap up , so it moisturises the moss a bit for some time

I have a feeling Peter doesn't have enough time to worry about that, but i do that. Especially after the tree throws roots, the moss can dry up if it's not water tight. I've never had any roots dry out from this but I imagine it slows the rooting if it's not damp.

If you can't obtain live sphagnum moss, will dried sphagnum moss do the trick?

yes, as usually you can only buy dried sphagnum moss from stores. Just add some water and you are good to go

How often does the air layering need watering?

Good question. Usually they never need watering because the branch above the wound receives water as normal (from the roots, through the xylem). The sphagnum moss is damp, but never soaking wet, and it retains that moisture as the roots begin to grow into it. Sometimes the moss will dry out, though, and you need to add a bit of water -- but just a bit!

you can add water as needed when very dry or really sunny so the moss never dries out completly, but most often rain keeps it moist enough. Just don't overwater it or the new roots will rot

@@lefthandluke8923 I have air layered 3 continus royal purple smoke bush 2 and a half months ago that would have needed cutting down, it looks as though one has rooted but the leaves on the other two have dried out. It was on 2-3 inch thick branch mind. And using compost. Little worried to cut it off, due to it being summer. I also have 4 escallonia stumps that are trying to leaf but unforutnately got scorched in the sun, my thinking was they like to be hot and dry for a bush that comes from mexico. Complete novice. Purchased a red maple acer in hopes to makie it a bonsai but its bit spindly and think il grow it in the ground and use it as a mother plant to possible future bonsai. Any advice is greatful.
