Robert, who sent me the Bachmann A4 "Union of South Africa" very kindly donated this old Hornby Class 47 to me.
A big thanks to Robert.

NIce job of trouble shooting, Bill, especially that last bit with the traction tires. Perhaps the reason it was reverse wired when you got it was that it ran better in reverse. As usual, thanks for sharing your knowledge and repair work. Cheers from Wisconsin!

This is really interesting and you and Barrie have given me an idea. The price of new model railway stuff these days has put me right off as I just don't have that kind of money. So why don't I go and 'rebuy' some of the stuff I that gave me so much pleasure 40 years ago? It's a fraction of the price of today's stuff and as I'm not into DCC or anything like that it's more than good enough for me, and obviously very serviceable. Hmmm. I wonder...

Sounds like a plan. And something a lot of us are having fun with. Loads of used locos on ebay etc but you really have to learn how to fix them. The older stuff is maybe cheap but will almost certainly need work to run nicely. That's all part of the fun though.

Thanks Bill another great video, I did chuckle at your comments about the cheap circlip pliers, seem to remember being told as an apprentice a good engineer never blames his equipment, that was a long time ago and there are some cheap rubbish tools about today. Nice colour scheme that green, looks better than the blue imo.

Ahh, Bill, always know that there's a gotcha to come when the servicing is 'finished' half way through the video! Pleased I called it right with the directional lighting problem when you suggested your initial wire swap. Next time I work on one of these, I'll try and remember the non-intuitive assembly order, and the traction tyre issue. Thank you for those tips. If you haven't had enough of fixing these Silver Seal 47s, and would like another challenge, I have one where the plastic bogie mounts have broken off (and gone -- before I got it) so the motor bogie doesn't stay in place. Spares are not an option (it's a weak point in the design) and I'm still to work out a solution. But now I need to progress my 47 up the repair queue and get on with it. No matter how many times I watch your great videos, my locos aren't going to mend themselves!!

I agree about the "silver sesl" motor Bill it is bulletproof for reliability & longevity, but generally peaking a bit on the noisy side. Some complex wiring going on there for a simple loco

Bill, I know nothing of this class of engine. However, at the start of the video you have the Fans / Silver vents in the direction of travel. Or away from the shed. At the end of the video the Fans / silver vents are away from the direction of travel, towards the shed end of the siding. Would this have anything to do with the engine running backwards?

Love watching your channel. Have you thought about Soldering blade/spade connectors on the motor? It might make servicing easier in the future and avoid the use of the iron.

Interesting Bill and have one of these old girls and certainly has that very solid feel similar to original Hornby Dublo locos. Reliable but always been a bit temperamental as a runner. Maybe by removing the traction tyres you have found the answer!?

I have two with broken motor bogie frames, both at the top where the bogie is held into the frame. The problem is partly that the plastic is very old, and very hard. (And, as Bill has just proved, it also needs to assembled in a non-intuitive way. Useful to see that!) Spares just do not exist. I've been in two minds as to whether to persevere with them!

So D1738 got tired of sitting in its box in my cellar waiting for a new railway to run on and decided to head off in its own😂. All the way to Scotland too! These are still good locos even if they are old. Enjoy it 👍. Wil you send her back to me when my new layout’s built? 😉 PS shouldn’t the lights be connected to a diode rather than a resistor to control direction ?

Hi Bill ,, Where do you get the service sheets for these one's ? Good job on getting that one going. I have a loco with the same head code as this but it has D1670 And it has MAMMOTH on it and the only other difference i can see in it from yours are the vents and fan covers are silver on top. Oh & my one has the ringfield motor in it which was a really slow and jittery but it had some life in it when i got it so I give it a good clean and oiling and goes pretty good now. I just looked on the bottom and its a hornby made in Great Britain haha (it pays to look somtimes hey) Cheers from John in Australia

Well done Bill another challenging resurrected class 47. I just wonder how many people would have ripped the locomotive to bits again rather than remove two traction tires? And, considering the light loads put on the engine on your lay-out does it realy matter that two tites have been removed?
@oobill

Most locos only have two traction tyres anyway so traction is still ok.

@PeterJewell2 Жыл бұрын
@@robindow5742 - Just watched John's interesting video on converting a Hornby HST to flicker-free LED (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJ-qpJhy3pu5kWQ.html ). I have seen this discussed elsewhere, and I think the conclusion was that stay-alive for DC cannot work. John's circuit provides the same polarity to the capacitor/LED regardless of whether the loco is going forwards or backwards -- that's what the bridge rectifier is doing: two diodes pass the current to the capacitor in one direction, a different pair do the same in the other direction. The LED is effectively no longer directional, it is always on. You could theoretically connect this circuit to a locomotive motor, but it would only ever go in one direction! The second problem is physics. The LEDs are drawing no more than 10-20mA. A (modern) motor will draw 200-300mA or more, and an old one with a weak magnet might be approaching a whole amp! Therefore, you would need a capacitor at least 20 times the capacity to get anywhere near. (I have a vague recollection of someone mentioning that the back EMF from the motor could also destroy the capacitor.) I'm showing my lack of knowledge here, I know, but bottom line is: I don't think it can be done on DC, or we'd be doing it!

One of Hornbys' worst models? They changed that motor bogie after only a year, I believe ? The second version was a little better but not much! The third version came out with new plastic bogies with much simplified wiring and was OK? This class 47 has never been much from Hornby in any version, and thankfully, Lima gave us a really good class 47 before Heljan which again was crap . It was amazing how Hornby kept pedalling this version out and ironically, they bought the Lima tooling and gave that one ago?
