I had one of these when I was a nipper - I think that it's still in my attic. I found running much improved by connecting the two carriages together electrically.

My mummy-moo bought me one of these at a model railway exhibition when I was a wee nipper. Unboxed and second-hand, but I absolutely loved it. I think it's impressive that we used to get a motor in both ends of these - certainly something we wouldn't see today. I don't remember mine being so unreliable across pointwork - maybe I just got lucky with mine? I ought to dig mine out and have a wee look at her again. :)

I still have one of those in the loft. I was given it by a friend who did not like it, it came from a set which included a diesel loco and wagons. I do remember though, that mine has a conductive coupler and only one motor, and all axles had pick ups, positive and negative on both units (maybe it was unique to the specific set it was boxed as), so it seems the design may have been constanly evolving.

A bit noisy, wobbly running and keep stopping... To be honest it just sounds like Hornby absolutely nailed the characteristics of the original Pacers!!!!

Got one of the later ones with 4 pick ups per coach. Still awful runner, (just like the real one's.). I believe they modified them a third time by adding a electrical connection between the coaches which solved the problem

Glad you solved most of the issues even though I winced when you used the hammer! Do you have a back to back gauge? If so use this and a small vice.

Great Bill. Just got one on eBay which is fabulous. Tried it and, compared to yours is very quiet! Anyway I am already thinking of power through the centre coupling (x8448 are available but I have plenty of plugs & sockets). Then thoughts of DCC so new wheel sets might be required (also available........) But, I am looking at doing the whole job without having to use spare parts........ Wish me luck! 😆 😆

To help with pick-up issues have a look at ESU 50707 if you ever feel you need additional pick-ups on difficult locos or carriages.

Hi Bill, Are you familiar with the Triang Aurora? The one I have does not run do I began tge process of taking it apart to clean it. What I noticed was; I used a 9 volt battery to test it and the motor turned but when I placed it on the track nothing happened. I then noticed there was some play in the wheels/cog and they would engage when I pushed the. From the bottom? Any ideas?

The extra pick up from the wheel is a great idea. I actually wired my two cars a few years ago together using a micro plug connector and it runs perfectly with no stalling. But was never able to cure the wobble, like yours on just one of the cars. Did you cure yours in the end? Cheers. Vivian.
