I was sent this Hornby Class A4 "Sir Nigel Gresley" by a chap called Jimmy who said it was running intermittently and needed an overhaul. Support - ko-fi.com/oobill73561 FAQ - ko-fi.com/post/FAQ-C0C6E0UO4

If ever a loco looked happy with a service, this one sure did.

These old Hornby tender drive locos are like Fender Telecasters of model railways, so simple yet indestructible no matter how much abuse they get.

Certainly benifited from a good scooshing! Well done Bill.

Bill Love the website best of the 00 model railway websites in UK I am a big Hornby fan in Colorado USA originally from the North West of England (been here in Colorado USA 35 years and 66 years old ) and have a layout similar to yours. Great to see some one repairing these locos and giving so much valuable information to everyone, I collect the Hornby locos made in England up to the time they transferred production to China. First Hornby set was a clockwork set 21 and my father put a small cigarette end in the chimney as it went round to produce smoke very creative> (Anyone reading Don't Smoke or vape he eventually died of smoking) I just subscribed to your site I think next year Hornby should give you the prize of best informative website.Keep up the great content. Ken

Quite funny that I am a Colorado narrow gauge fan, but live in Europe. Though British steam I like because of the colours and Bill has really good videos - I like the atmosphere of his modelling.

@@czwij You would love the Durango and Silverton narrow gauge quite a ride for tourists with steep cliffs great scenery and a old wild west town at Silverton.The George town loop is also a great tourist attraction. Silver Minning and Gold were big here and there's even a town called Leadville and a town called Last Chance if it didn't strike it rich. My history and passion is related to the 1960's British railways and Coal Mining. Coal was king where I grew up and i can still remember 8F's pulling coal trains in summer and sparks from the chimney would set alight the grass as the went by but they would burn themselves out .Love this website better than Sams Trains or Chadwick Model railway you learn so much more and is good Engineering skills for all ages plus you always feel good when something works when you have repaired it yourself.

Great job Bill, one of the oiliest I have seen you do. Even my old company got a mention, Castrol. 😁👍 beautiful old loco, it’s a shame when people don’t know any better and drown them in oil

Nice job once again, Bill. You have now got a manky towel to go with that manky brush 😅

I've bought a few "poor runners" off eBay that are bathed in oil like that one. A good cleanup and they're often ok. Nice job as always and it didn't sound too noisy for an old loco. As for the wife pinching your towels, it's only fair as you keep pinching her toothbrushes to replace your manky brush.🤣

Looks like one I bought from ebay. Didn't run well so previous owner had drowned it in oil. With only 12 volts available dirt is your enemy, oil attracts dirt like moths to a flame.

Yeah. Leaned that lesson the hard way.

Plus most spray lubricants use silicone which is an insulating material. Nice job Bill.

We've all done it (well, most of us. Well, some of us. Well, me anyway): knowing that adding lube is a "good thing", we oil away with gay abandon, find it's not had the desired effect, so oil it some more! Only experience (and watching Bill and the use of contact cleaner) saves our locos from a slippery, over-lubed grave. Top tip on preparing new brushes for action. And that accompanying 9F looked the business too. Was that skip full in the previous episode?

when they are as oily as this i use degreaser, works a treat, you have to wash it off though, just let things dry off and then clean as a whistle

Think its wd40 contact cleaner NOT the WD40 lubricant. I use the contact cleaner, it's very good.
@stephendavies69494 ай бұрын
Yep. Just be careful to buy the contact cleaner. Don't let the regular stuff anywhere near your locos.

Other than it might have ruined your ultrasonic cleaner, might it have been less painful to dunk the lot?! Even after cleaning that ring field still sounds sweet.
@adventuresinmodelrailroading4 ай бұрын
Depending on the cleaner used in the ultrasonic cleaner and how hot it gets, it may have stripped paint. That being said, I would have been strongly tempted to clean the metal parts of the chassis in the ultrasonic cleaner and repaint them black. But I wouldn't have done that to any part I didn't want to repaint like the wheels or the plastic part of the tender chassis.

Any reason you can’t just drop the whole ringfield motor in the sonic cleaner and then just let it dry off?
@oobill4 ай бұрын
The solution I use in the cleaner is fairly strong alkali solution meant for cleaning metal. I am experimenting on what it does to plastics and chassis blocks and so far it seems OK. However, a lot of dirt gets trapped in the mechanism and the only way to remove it is to dismantle it. I really don't like the idea of putting an armature into a sonic cleaner though.

Good Morning Bill, lovely loco to repair, I have dropped you a email of a locomotive I would like repairing please, is it possible that you can fix it? Kind regards Harry

Why don’t you get a dcc controller and do some repairs on dcc locomotives
Surprised you didn’t have Greta Thunberg and the Just Stop Oil mob banging on your door over this one. Servicing checklist: 1 gallon of Castrol GTX. Check. 😁
