What a lovely job, and such a quiet runner, for a motor that must be pushing 60 years old!

I have a Dublo class 20 that I got used, and it had been fitted with the Triang tension lock couplings! They work great, but normally, when I buy Dublo, I run them as stock as I have the triang converter wagons that were offered by triang back in the 60s . I have also found that Dublo models are now very good value as prices seem to have fallen off on them and I've picked up the diesels at really good prices and there is a good supply of spares around from several traders!

great job. I always thought that the cab would have been better as the front. I'm no engineer, I just thought that the fact the driver could see would be an advantage.

Another great service video, I like that you have kept the engine shed as part of the process whilst in between layouts.

Nice one Bill! Good to see that the ‘repair department’ is ‘business as usual’ during the major reconstruction phase.

Great to see you working your magic on a lovely vintage model! The early Hornby Dublo / Wrenn models have a simple charm to them and to my mind are far more robust than todays almost museum spec models which are overly detailed and therefore fragile. None of the fine detail can be seen anyway from normal viewing distance, so I don’t really understand the craze for them. Nor the extortionate prices some are prepared to pay for them! Looking forward to seeing the new layout build. Best wishes from Wirral!

Dublo most certainly over-engineered their products, a Dublo loco hauled a train in a test covering an actual 500 miles with minimal wear, the motor armature had made around 78 million revolutions during the test, agree that Dublo have a charm and appeal, also S/H Dublo is not expensive to buy, Dapol still make the ex- Dublo super-detail wagons, prices are around 40% of modern Bachmann or Hornby wagons

So good to see your service videos, it’s true that one may get more from servicing and repairing locos and rolling stock then running the railway. It’s great when you see them running around after you have brought life back into them… keep these great videos coming. All best Marc from Leighton Buzzard

Interesting to see the Dublo version of the 20. I have a couple of the later Wrenn which are a bit different and perhaps not in a good way. The metal tie bar between the bogies is plastic on the Wrenn; but more significantly, the traction tyres are on one side only on the power bogie and the trailing bogie only provides power from one side. So it looks like the HD model has 8 wheel pick-up (traction tyre wheels maybe just the flanges?) whereas the Wrenn has only 4. The body and running number seem to be the same.

Thanks for showing that, you got that to run really well, the Dublo 2 rail 20 was never brilliant, compared to the 3 rail model, I have two and they suffer from the same wobble, even after changing wheels and bogies, the pick-ups aren't ideal, which is probably why the 3 rail works better. Excellent repair.

I'd hate to see what my locos look like on the inside as I've never serviced any of my locos and some are 40 years old, but still run reasonably well so I don't have any motive to take them apart. Only one has given up on me but I think the brushes just need changing. 👍 Great video though
@PeterJewell2
@PeterJewell2 Жыл бұрын
It's more likely that whatever oil/grease was in there has evaporated or turned to 'glue' and the friction is too much for the motor to turn. Many locos rely on electricity passing through the axles to the chassis, through a film of oil, so if that becomes non-conductive the loco won't move; and anyway, if the oil is gummy, it will resist the axles turning. I've only ever found one loco with nearly worn-out brushes, and that was my late Dad's Dublo R1, which wasn't new when we got it. Loco servicing is a very satisfying hobby!
@CustomiZe_
@CustomiZe_ Жыл бұрын
@@PeterJewell2 no i don't think its that, it seems something electrical. Its a ringfield motor and when you put pressure on the gears the motor begins to vibrate. Then if you spin the gears manually and essentially kick start the motor it spins for a bit and then fizzles out and then short circuits. Very odd.

The top-plate connecting the bogies should be marked for refitting, it is not symmetrical and if the wrong orientation the bogies will foul the bodyshell on curves, the fittings are BA threads if replacements are required

Brilliant, Bill, and just what I need for the same work on the same model - wish I'd come across the video a few days ago! I need to replace the traction tyres, maybe wheels too but not finding it easy to identify the right ones. Would you be able to help with that please? Thanks so much.

Hi. I have this model. Following your lovely video it went from total non runner to semi working. Do you find these models need a remag at all? Mine makes the controller hot and from experience with other types they have run better after a remag. Would be greatful for your thoughts

Hi Bill, I’ve an old Wrenn class 20 which runs very slowly. I think it needs a good clean up, but if I remove the magnet to get at the motor, do I need to re magnetise the magnets? I don’t have a remagnetiser
@oobill
@oobill Жыл бұрын
Ideally yes. If you can try to keep the magnet with it's pole pieces intact as much as possible it might not be too bad. Sometimes they will lose their power almost instantly and other times they don't. Magnets are weird. If you have a weak magnet either send the motorised chassis to someone who has a remagnetiser or , as last resort, fit a neodymium magnet. If you are in the UK I'm happy to remag for the price of return postage.

Hi Bill, not about this one. Can you tell me where to get the upgrade kit for X03 to type 7. I have several Triang & Hornby locos, which I would to fit the kit. Regards Alan. Thanks

www.hornbytriangspareparts.co.uk/item/20252-HORNBY-DUBLO-WRENN-PAIR-OF-TRACTION-TYRES-REPO-K2A Be warned they are a bit of a fiddle to fit. Deep grooves on the wheels and narrow tyres that twist very easily when fitting.

@@oobill thanks, I had tried to search on peters spares but couldn't find the right ones also. Unlike the one in your video, mine has a lot of paint missing on the top, so is getting a spruce up. Thanks for the link, 👍👍

The grass on your new layout is nowhere near as good as your old one. 🤣 It looks like you got to that motor just in time. The brushes were basically gone. Nice job as usual.
