Worked for Pete at Just Like The Real Thing, I was their metal caster for years, lovely guy whenever I met him I appreciate his passion for it and even though I'm OO myself rather than O it was still a pleasure to be making the models and I enjoyed visiting his layout.

One thing that wasn't mentioned, to do with Pete's love of railways, was that his first job in the early '60s was as a Fireman on British Railways. "I was a big lad and I could shovel coal and that was good enough". Great guy, good interview.

The experience that Pete expressed when he received his first toy train sounded like myself. I still have my first train set and at about 15years later the set still works. I too treasured it more than anything else that I had. My biggest and greatest memory was showing my PA how proud I was of my train set and it was he who introduced me to the world of model railways. Some precious memories were had with him and all around running a model train. Wish he was still around to see my railway now. My railway allows me to get away from the troubles of life and to involve myself in a would that I envision, weather that be made up or re create a time that existed before I was born. It’s the only place where I can truly feel at home and at peace. This was most enjoyable to watch and indeed has made me more excited to see the whole series now. Keep safe, Clint

My first train set was a Princess Elizabeth and 1 coach and some rails that my cousin had new. I will always remember that battered engine, I wish I still had it ! Now I have the set I bought for my son, and I'm adding to it even though he left home in 2008 !

I am of that era but older 79, but my first Hornby train set was Duchess of Montrose.. I made possibly without LED electric signalling worked off a track circuit system... I was a Telegraph clerk at Burton on Trent station, Trains in my blood , and my family ALL went on the railway ,It was what I called a family... Wonderful story Peter presented with down to earth and commonsense material... Being on the railway was a family in itself...Thank you...

@@williamwoolhouse3702 Wonderful days , The gas works, Water works ,the GPO, the railway , They were all like a family.. you went to and I spent time in the RAF but the comradeship wasn't only there it was in civie street with these essential services.. I loved inventing and to achieve track circuit signalling on my lay out was so exciting.. Great days Will, I am a radio Ham and made my own equipment , hence the days of improvisation and invention, Peter described it well .. Thank you..

Thanks Pete & Hornby for putting this out. Love the scale talk & striving for perfection. That place to go in very tough times like music. Somewhere to get lost and just be. The childhood passion sparked by Hornby & attention to detail & how to turn your imagination into reality on a layout. Margate & the thought to go, yet you can’t quite get it penned into the Diary. My life has had Hornby stamped on it since early childhood too, like countless others. On seeing my best mates Flying Scotsman & never being able to afford one until I got the TTS model a few years back. So proud to fulfill that vow I made to myself back then. Interesting too, that I could make the layouts & sell them to him just a few years later but, never quite have enough in pocket to run the train he had, that sparked the creations he bought off me, thus enabling me to fund the next project. Finally, a confession... When muso friends come to the house or giggle at this modeling passion of mine, then I just mention Pete or Rod & that instantly calms their skepticism when they catch me in the loft on a runaround or soldering seep point motors instead of discussing U47 mics or that melody in your head x

A lovely story from a very genuine man we can all relate to, the description he gave of owning his first model railway must have struck a cord with many people who have enjoyed this video. My first train-set was Tri-ang Hornby, consisting of an oval of track, a blue 0-4-0 loco called "Nellie" and 3 wagons, it was the start of a life long hobby.

My mother worked at Rovex in Margate in the 70’s. I also worked there in 1978 during the school summer holidays, it was when I was between 5th and 6th form, I was 16, ( I think it was for about 6-8 weeks) I worked in XPS department, making the white polystyrene boxes. And yes I love model railways.

Great memories of a great team. And yet you get comments below about what has Rovex got to do with Hornby. All the smarts and energy of current Hornby came from Rovex Margate not the long defunct Liverpool Hornby disaster, of which none of which was carried on to Margate.

That was great to watch. It brings back my memories of my first train set when I was four. It was a Hornby Dublo Stanier 8F train set. I stopped being a railway modeller when I was 16, I was more interested in meeting girls at the youth clubs etc. However, I got back into the hobby in my early 20's and I've been a keen modeller ever since.

May I say that Hornby and model railways are not just boy's toys, Some of us girls love to build model railways, and I have an interest in keeping the real thing alive. My models are narrow gauge, OO9 and O:16.5. I build the white metal kits and brass coaches. I have had a lot of problems in my life and if I hadn't got my model railways I don't think I would be here. It has helped me get through some very dark times in my life.

Pete Waterman is an icon of the Model Railway Modelling World. I hope that a Locomotive that I have bought off of eBay a Black 5 In B.R. black is one of those that he endorsed and it has its own number. 45190. Rod Stewart is another. He also took models to make when he was on tour and hired a second room in a Hotel, just to do his modelling in. I will write my own story and send it in. Thank you, Hornby, for making this video. Why is this entitled Hornby Memories? The real Hornby was Hornby Dublo from Meccano in Liverpool. These models were die cast and the rolling stock was litho printed tin plate originally. The Horby Dublo rang ceased to be when Rovex took over the company for the name in I think the mid 60s? the patterns for the real Hornby Dublo passed to G.R Wrenn. Rovex Tiang or whatever they called themselves bought the real Hornby for it's name. This facts seen to have been forgotten in the mists of time.

The Hornby Trains and Hornby Dublo crashed into near bankruptcy in 1964 due to many bad decisions. To salvage something they asked the successful Rovex-Triang Margate based company to buy them out. After more upheavals Rovex used the name Hornby and the renamed Rovex-Triang at Margate is what we have today at the 1954 Rovex-Triang Margate factory as HQ. That is why Rovex is the most significant company to current Hornby.
