I originate from Mow Cop and we used to call it Cow Mop too! Its a NT folly in the form of a castle, the other side of Crewe, hence it being used as a Northern Bell name due to it being local. Great review as usual and of course I'm going to have to buy the pack now just for Cow Mop coach!

Great review Sam, I actually got this set delivered earlier this week from Rails for less than £120, absolute bargain, yes, the loco isn't up to much but the coaches are great. Keep up the good work Sam, stay safe and thanks.

I'm looking to buy the Northern Belle box set for my birthday next month, hence why I'm checking out some videos on it beforehand! First off, I recognised you from Hornby: A Model World. Now, I'm seeing exactly why your subscribers love your channel! Secondly, I definitely agree with you on the detail part. While the coaches look stunning, the loco needs a lot of work. If I designed this Class 57, I'd have at least added LED working lights and springs buffers. But I'm still tempted to buy this nonetheless! Thank you, Sam. You have a new subscriber!

Gorgeous decor. The loco looks like a redecoration of the one that used to be included in the Majestic train set. Hornby recycling their moulds, I imagine.

Quite a nice train set! The class 57 loco is in fact the original class 47 from the early 2000s. I have one and it is quite nice despite traction tyres although they are quite slidy. I could tell it wasn't a super detail model because that particular class 57, 57601 in real life has a different style of lights to the one used in this pack. However some changes have been made to make it more like a 57 I believe.

A fair review. I bought mine for £115 purely because our house is about 2 miles from Mow Cop and my wife and I have been on the Northern Belle. Lovely experience. Literally just put a DCC chip in it today but still jerks like a good 'un at slow speed. Maybe a bit of tuning will help. I'm happy with it at the price I paid as I had heard not great things about the pack. More of happy memory reminder than anything for me.

Amazing review on the Hornby Northern Belle Luxury Train Pack! The livery for the Class 57 and the 3 coaches is giving me this luxurious vibe, the color scheme also reminds me of one of the Pullman coaches that you've got in your collection. For the price of £135, it sounds like a wonderful price in terms of what you get. It's a shame that the mechanism of the Hornby Class 57 isn't all that good, it would've been nice if the mechanism had the modern features just like any other modern locomotive up to this time. But ignoring that, this is still a great looking train pack from Hornby! :)

Further to your accompanied video info Sam, Hornby released a Northern Belle Train Pack back in 2013/14. The set R3134 also included a loco and three MK2 coaches, the loco was the Class 47790 Galloway Princess with small cab DRS Compass logos in the beautiful Pullman Brown and Cream livery. Likewise the three coaches are also in the same livery to complement the stock in the train pack. They were MK2D TSO Chatsworth, TSO Belvoir, and BSO Car #17167, but Hornby extended this with a coach pack R4539. This pack included the coaches TSO Glamis, TSO Warwick, and TSO Harlech. Prior to these Hornby released the Brown and Cream livery of the West Coast Railway Pullman (CP) R4455 with MK2D TSOs Crummock Water, Grasmere, and Ennerdale Water in 2012/13. Then before those in 2011/12 WCR train set R2979, which included TSOs Bassenthwaite, Buttermere, and Rydal Water within it. A further addition to note and to extend the loco fleet is the excellent 2014 Rail Exclusive/Suttons Locomotive Workshop (SLW) released engines. They did a limited edition run of the Northern Belle in the guise of Class 47790 Galloway Princess and 47832 Solway Princess in a partnership with Vitrains as V-2000 and V-2001 respectfully. These two locos were decorated in the DRS Compass small cab logo Pullman Brown and Cream livery. There you go then, with some of the items I personally have and others worth checking out if you wish to extend your set and to run other engines and their liveries with your rolling stock. for myself, I'd like to add the Class 57 601 and Cow Mop (now you've got me at it... LOL) to my fleet if given a chance to get them. Though I think I would add extra pickups and weight for better running, Plus I'm jealous of you Sam in having the Excalibre set that I have been trying to get in a new mint or near-mint condition.

I just bought a new Duke of Gloucester trainpack R3192 Heritage rail express and paid £120 for it. The mk1s are indistinguishable from my other premium hornby mk1s and the Duke is also finished to a high standard. To say I'm happy with the product is an understatement! The railroad duke is amazing compared to the unconvincing class 47 in this trainpack. Great video.

When you said the mechanism wasn't great, the first thing I thought of was that they put a 3-pole motor in it. Also, I'm surprised it got through the 2nd radius curves at 50% speed without derailing.

Hi Sam, I have just purchased this train pack and like you have mixed views. Coaches are lovely as is the pack decoration wise. Points to let it down, a VERY basic loco, no lights and no nem couplings. I have fitted mine with a laisdcc decoder but still the crawl is poor. But for the price I am happy. Great video Sam, keep them coming.

Hi Sam . It may not be the most accurate of models but I like mine and it is a good runner. I have also bought the coach pack with 'Harlech' ,'Belvoir 'and Alnwick. Providing the loco is positioned with the motor at the rear it pulls the rake of 6 no problem and looks great going around the layout. Maybe Railroad but horses for courses.

Out of all the names for these 3 luxurious coaches, “Mow Cop” is definitely one of the weirdest names I've ever heard. I could imagine a cop mowing the lawn for some odd reason. I find it funny how you thought the name of the 3rd coach is “Cow Mop” LOL! Imagine Bullman when he has to clean up his own mess while using a mop along with wearing a maid outfit LMAO! That would've hilarious to see! This name is weird but yet hilarious at the same time! xD

i have a hornby class 66 with about the same detail as that 57! but the 66 still looks so smart in the GBRf livery!

An awesome train pack. On par in the US market at $187. The loco would be $74.73 in the US market which is on par for a diesel loco. Stay safe Sam and I am keeping the United Kingdom in my prayers.

got better the more you got into the video - looked good on the track pulling the coaches - like the idea of 5 pole motor and pick on all wheels - certainly you get a lot for your money

West coast railways who ran the northern belle service used to store the carriages at the Severn Valley Railway for a short period.

I've got a recent Hornby RR 47 in the all-maroon livery. It is light and its details isn't exactly grand...BUT, for its value, its looks, and reasonable performance (it's a smooth runner on my loop layout), I'm reasonably happy with it. Put some proper maroon coaches behind it and it REALLY makes it stand out.

'Mow Cop' is a village in Cheshire. I know of it because of the eighteenth century Folly castle that surmounts a nearby hilltop.

Looks like the loco is representative of the new Railroad Plus range, with older tooling diesels given full livery treatment. Personally I like a good train pack, but I prefer the ones with fully super detailed stock. The Bellmond Pullman with the 67 looks like a nice one. I have two Hornby train packs. The Imperial Airways SR pack with the T9 and pullman coach, and The Bristolian GWR pack with a King and the Colletts. Both are excellent, high detailed packs.

Inaccuracies aside, the livery on that 57 looks rather nice, though have just looked up the N Gauge one is the same price as that Hornby Train pack on ebay, might have to save up for it... or get the Network Rail one. As always, great review Sam!

Yes it has a few short comings ie the 57 actually being a repainted 47, which could be "fixed" by renumbering to one of the 47s that used to pull the train or following the 80/20 rule fill the ends flat and fit newer lights etc, but this train pack is exactly what the hobby needs more of, a decent affordable ready made train that looks good and isn't so fragile that those of a clumsier nature eg children or me can handle it without it falling to pieces, note some highly detailed models turning up already broken! And yes to put my money where my mouth is I bought it from a model shop, and added to it another coach off a well known auction site, yes I'd like the sleeper etc but not at the price they currently go for.
