I admit to liking both your wagons and the tender-based ones. I am glad that Hornby have tried to expand the range of Era 1 models, despite the compromises that remind me of what they did in the 1970s with various wagons and coaches and even some engines.

I do fully accept that charging over £25 each for the "tender" wagons is silly. If they were £15 each I could just about justify having some.

@@SamsTrains on e could argue all they have done is reverse engineer Stephen's work, as Rockets original tender (as modelled) was simply a L&MR standard (1830) coal cart with a barrel added for water and front panelling removed. The coal carts as modelled by Hornby are reasonable representations, and no other manufacturer would make a complete new tool for these if they had one that offered most of what was needed.

@@SamsTrains Definetly not the largest fan of Hornby, and gotta say they’ve been getting noticeably cheaper over the last decade (£80 for a 40 year old Jinty is bloody ludicrous) I don’t really like the era 1 stuff, same with the TT:120 range, but for people who do, they’re big, flagship ranges and big Hornby projects. However…….The word “lazy” springs to mind…

@@TidmouthSheds 100% not a word that springs to my mind. Expensive without a doubt is how I describe model railways today, but if you think Hornby are doing things like that, take a look at Bachmann, Many of the UK locos and rolling stock in their range go back to the 1980's also with only minor upgrades (and a new chassis on some of the locos) so good (for the day) were the tooling made by replica railways and Mainline which manufactured the tooling. Dapol are still producing goods wagons they inherited off Wrenn, which in turn were purchased off Lines Brothers following the closure of the Hornby Dublo range, and they date back to the 1960's! (and are stil great) Much of the continental tooling goes back decades as does the American companies tooling. Its not often a manufacture wont milk every little bit of investment out of a tooling, just by making similar models or upgrading the detailing or running gear. At least Hornby normally place these older models in their Railroad ranges (unless their a limited special addition) unlike others who keep these older models in the main range at premium prices. The Problem I have noticed the price increases of new models by ALL manufacturers has lead to a jump in the prices of second hand models.

How tiger is modelled is very much how Lion was recovered in the 1920's (except she had lost her tender and rear wheel sets) and the brass cowling on the "haycock" firebox was fitted in the 1930's rebuild, and if you remove this brass work, that is how the firebox proper looks on Lion, the brass being fitted to create a dummy haycock firebox. According to the sources I have read over many years, Tiger is reasonably close to correct to her latter working guise, (there may be minor dimensional inaccuracies), Lion and Tiger were both rebuilt in 1841 with larger higher pressure boilers, which required longer frames to be fitted, the frames of Lion were not changed in length during the restoration. Lions tender was in fact a Furness railway tender cut down in the 1930s to suite, and not like how the original is believed nowdays to have looked. There is engravings of how these locos looked in the 1830's, but if you look at (which is now called) Lion in the photos as when it was recovered from the docks (and before being "Restored" by a committee) Hornby's Tiger looks very much like that. Lion as restored is a beautiful locomotive, but nothing like how she worked commercially. Lion was further modified in the 1980s when rebuilt by Rustons Ltd of Lincoln, which saw the fitting of lorry type air brakes and revivors to the tender. As for the coal wagons, your talking complete Balls. You need to do your research into rocket in order to ascertain their accuracy. The full size rocket tender used during the Rainhill trials (as modelled and represented in the replicas that have been built) was a standard L&MR coal cart with (what I was told) a brandy barrel added for water, and the front plate removed. These are accurate representations of the standard coal cart, if that used on Rocket was correct, but remember by the time Rocket entered revenue service, she was rebuilt to lower the cylinders and a "modern" tender fitted as used on locos such as can been seen on the replica Planet, and at sometime fitted with a more modern boiler. You might not like the era 1 rolling stock (other than the passenger coaches) that are very accurate as modelled "IF" the artistic impressions of the 1830/40's are accurate, however I agree it should have been less than £10 lower in price compaired to the Lion set. I wish these models had an option to fit nem pockets, and use small hook and tension couplings.

@@mikebrown3772 all the rolling stock was designed and was under construction WELL before the opening in 1830, so they did have a standardised design for a coal wagon, and they did indeed supply one of these to the Stepehensons for use with rocket and one to Hackworth for use with San Pareil. In both cases they had the front panel removed and a wooden barrel added for water storage. There is documented evidence of this, as well a artistic illustrations showings these wagons, both in use as loads during the rainhill trials and uses as tenders on the above mentioned locomotives. There description in many cases was Coal Carts (no idea why) where other accounts I've seen them simply called open wagons. Sorry to destroy you disillusion.

Excellent video, thank you. Don't be too hard on the Hornby wagons: there are two stories about the tenders of Sans Pareil and Rocket at Rainhill: one that they were built by local coachbuilders and the other that they were converted from existing wagons (although some illustrations show SP with a totally different tender). There is a contemporary sketch (I can't find it at the moment), which shows a "coal wagon" which is not entirely dissimilar to the Hornby version- although I'm more inclined to believe that these were were actually spoil wagons- being available in 1829 and having end opening.

From what I've heard, tenders in BR days were used as coal wagons. Honestly, using Rocket's tender as coal wagons doesn't bug me.
@James_Rivett
@James_Rivett Жыл бұрын
the real Rockets original tender was a standard L&MR coal cart (thats what they were called) that was adapted for that purpose, so despite the rubbish Sam has said about Hornby being lazy, the adaption of Rockets tender as a coal cart is correct and accurate. No other manufacturer would make an entire new tool when they had one that with minor alterations could produce the desired model. In this instance, Sam's research let him down, he also made incorrect statements about Lion in this videos about the frames, the frames were extended in 1841 when both locos had bigger boilers fitted. How tiger is models, is pretty much how (what is believed is) Lion looked in the photos when it was recovered from Liverpool docks. if you removed the dummy brass haycock firebox off Lion (that was fitted in 1930, the firebox underneath is exactly like that as modeled on tiger.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains Жыл бұрын
But if we're assuming that Tiger looked as Lion did when recovered from the docks (which is not a wise assumption), she should have no splashers, a much wider chimney, and a significantly different boiler. I researched both Lion/Tiger and the wagons shown in this video to the best of my ability - and I stand by my findings at the moment, as I've seen zero evidence to the contrary.
@SodorTrain1225

@Sam'sTrains At the end of the day, they're not realistic. However, on the bright side, you spare tenders in case Rocket's are damaged. All you'll need is a water barrel, some plastic coal, and some yellow paint.

@@SamsTrains splashers would have been lost between 1875 and 1923 when fitted as a pumping engine. Its almost a certanty that the loco would have had splashers in working service at the latter time No differences at all in chimney dia, Lion had a much longer chimney with brass cap fitted in the 1930 restoration. Both had boiler rebuilds in either 1841 or 1845 (depending on the literature read). Both engines were built to the same design in 1938 and rebuilt to same design in the 1940's when working as luggage engines, which judging from the accounts given, involved new boilers, frames and cylinders. I have only eve seen engravings of thr 4 sisters Elephant and Buffalo, Lion and Tiger) in their original 1838 shape, which was a lot different. According to leading locomotive archaeologist Anthony Dawson, there is no evidence to suggest that what we call Lion is in fact Lion, it could be Tiger, or another locomotive as the harbour board purchased 3 locomotives in 1859 from the LNWR (who became owners of the locos in owners in 1946) and 2 more from the L&YR, and it was not until 1975 that the loco became a pumping engine

Maybe there's an extended range possible there: I believe the L&M transported cotton, and presumably that had to have covered accommodation. Sam's opinion on the wagons is quite wrong, the Rocket during the Rainhill trials used a standard L&MR coal cart with front panel removed and a barrel added for a tender, so these coal carts (as the L&MR described them) are correct, and there is no laziness at all. Tiger had 3 sisters, Lion (both built in 1838) and Elephant and Buffalo (built in 1839). Lion and Tiger were COMPLETELY rebuilt in 1841 and 1845 at Edge hill works, and according to railway historian and archaeologist, what we call Lion may not be Lion at all, and could be tiger or another loco. Sampson was (if my memory serves) a larger loco on a simular basis, but a different design. Tiger as modelled is from her 1840's rebuild. Lion as modeled is after her 1930 "restoration" and completely different to how she looked in revenue service.

@@tooleyheadbang4239 Yes. Lion as offered by Hornby is in the condition that (what we call) Lion was rebuilt into when restored in 1930 and nothing like how she worked. Tiger is very much how "LIon" is expected to have looked before becoming a pumping engine.

I pre-ordered the Rapido train pack, then Hornby brought out Lion and I almost changed, but the couplings and lack of nem pocket put me off. I made my own titfield stock, I used two modified triang 4wheel crane chassis cut and shut with a triang rocket coach and the toad brakevan is available off the shelf, so after the price Jumped for the train pack, I changed my mind and opted for Rapios model of Lion on its own (simply because it has tension lock couplings like the rest of my stock) and cancelled the train pack. I did however preorder the W&U team coach as my model is a modified continental balcony coach in LNER brown. I already have 1401 in black from a limited edition by Dapol. Next obstical.... How to justify running these on a Great Eastern branch line of the mid to late 1950s lol.

Hey Sam, if you wanna try out a new manufacturer and spend a ludicrous amount of money at the same time, have a look at the upcoming Märklin/Trix Flying Scotsman. It will be H0 (not 00) scale, largely made of metal, sound fitted, equipped with lots of light functions (something which 00 steamers never seem to have) and available in both three-rail (Märklin) and two-rail (Trix) pick-up mode. It will be a very "odd one out" model, both for their range (being British) and in terms of UK steam in general, being H0 and even available in a three-rail version. RRP is 590 Euros...

Hi Sam, thanks for the review. The Hornby wagons look okay, maybe they considered the locomotive is something of a guess so no point in worrying about the wagons. The issue, given their simplicity and use of existing tooling, is their price - ridiculous. £150 for the pack would have felt much fairer. That said I model 009 and those product prices make oo gauge seem good value. Your wagons look great. With your expanding range - Have you considered moving to resin printing? You would likely achieve better print fidelity and I suspect quicker print times for full build plates.

the coal carts are accurate despite Sam's misinformation. Rockets tender was a standard L&MR coal cart adapted for use as a tender for the rainhill trials, so hornby's reverse engineering of their rocket loco tender is perfectly acceptable and correct.

Era 1 is Victorian railways (or in the case of some, Georgian). I believe pregrouping (1900-1923) would be covered by Era 2. If modeling the LNER of 1925 you could have a model of Locomotion and sum chaldron wagons and if 1930 LMS you could use Lion as these were see. Running for special occasions )albeit in Locomotions case with a petrol engine mounted in tender to provide motive power).

I rather like the little wagons; they even used metal wheel sets instead of cheap plastic ones. Rather a pity these are era 1 rolling stock; good couplings hadn’t been invented yet. In a pinch, you could put almost any small items (like OO-scale boxes, or some naughty passengers) in them! Hell, you could even paint some of the wagons red and green for the Christmas season.

In issue 491 of Steam Railway magazine author Anthony Dawson points to evidence that the locomotive preserved as Lion was not the one that originally had that name. Mersey Docks and harbour board had bought several ex Liverpool & Manchester locomotives and only anecdotal evidence suggests that the surviving one is Lion. On that basis the chance of Tiger being an accurate loco when it is a modified tooling of the 1981 condition, rebuilt in the 1930s potentially misidentified loco seems slim. Having said that the loco is attractive in itself and if you want to buy the model then that’s fair enough. There is no photographic and only vague documentary evidence of what these early engines looked like so a little artistic licence is acceptable.

Well, I don’t know about that. A tender IS a sort of coal wagon, now, isn’t it? And it’s clear that the Lion “tender” was a coal wagon with a barrel for water, and one side removed so the fireman could shovel the coal, lest he dump it over the side in frustration (or on top of the Engineer!) Or maybe the barrel was to hide an ancient 19th century DCC decoder! 😌 Maybe they were distilling some hooch in the barrel; so little is known. 😢
