Every year, I like to go back and watch a few clips of horrible Pac12 officiating gaffes. This one is an annual favorite. The best thing about this horrible call is watching #23 of Oklahoma be the player who actually picks up the ball in the scramble (watch to the far right edge of the picture 23 pick up the ball, and then all the OK players point to him holding the ball). Not only does Oregon illegally touch the ball before 10 yards, but even if the touch was legal - they did not ever recover the ball. The stupid P12 refs go running into the scrum and pretend they see an Oregon player with the ball, which is pure fantasy. The other fun thing about this clip is the stupid ABC crew watch the replay 47 times, but never go back and show 23 actually collecting the ball. They were transfixed on the touch, but seemingly not interested in who actually recovered the ball. Hilarious Pac12 stuff. One for the ages.

Too painful to watch it after Refs award Ducks ball. But my memory is just what you wrote. I get it's standard def era, but's plain as day that 23 picked up ball and walked away. If he wasn't demonstrative, I wish he had been, but maybe it makes no difference with that Pac 10 crew. I've rarely been so mad. This has happened before. 2016, Browns fumble at Washington & Refs award ball to Wash even though Browns clearly recovered it. And as a Cowboys fan: In Super Bowl V vs Baltimore, in 3rd QTR leading 13-6, Dallas had 1st & Goal on Colts 1. RB Duane Thomas fumbled and Dallas center Dave Manders recovered. But Colts players sold it & with crowd going crazy Ref Jack Fette signaled Colts ball. Final score: Colts 16 Cowboys 13 The OU Oregon is most blatant of 3 where due to Pac 12 Refs, you think it was more than incompetence. But all 3 plays had crowd emotion and some player reaction that may have been a factor

The ball was clearly recovered by number 23 of Oklahoma who is literally standing up with the football in his arms while the Oregon players are diving to the ground, where a couple of Oklahoma players were, effectively creating a pile and fighting for a ball that is not even there. Oklahoma number 23 has it the entire time!
@idanoreilly Жыл бұрын
Correct, but the whistle had already blown by the time he picked it up. Point 0:23: listen for the whistle while #23 is still standing there. He doesn’t dive for it until point 0:25 when the ball was already blown dead. No one actually had the ball when the ref blew the whistle, he just assumed #15 of Oregon got it instead of double checking!! The reason Oklahoma rightfully should have gotten the ball was by the illegal touch by Oregon within 10 yards. Once the whistle blows, you can’t change what happens afterwards.

Ball is touched by the Oregon player at 9 yards. Should've been OU ball. But even worse is that #23 on OU comes up with the ball. None of the officials had any idea who had it and just gave the Ducks the ball because everyone was going wild. With all due respect, the OU player should've run right to the officials with the ball because they had NO CLUE!!!
@tsnide345 жыл бұрын
I'll never understand why he didn't. If it were me, I would have been screaming at the officials, "I had it the whole time!"
@thomasmckenzie45845 жыл бұрын
Thank you!!!! As stupid as this sounds, #23 should take some of the blame for this loss for not running over and handing the ball to one of the three blind mice, errr officials.

It went 10 yards you're just bad at football
@direcorbie7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Oregon player touched the ball first before it went 10 yards, so that part is a bad call. As for the recovery, #15 of Oregon clearly possesses and has control of the ball and is down by contact, which is why the whistle blew. The Oklahoma player didnt gain possession until after the play was dead.

If no one has possession when the play is blown dead, possession automatically goes to the receiving team.

Oregon Ducks Football Basketball You are the dumbest fucktard in this comment section. Who gives a fuck if it touched fingertips? You have to RECOVER the ball, which they didn’t.

Expect?? Um that it was a good call because the OU player used fingers tips to touch the ball. Big 12 refs are no better but Big Ten refs are the worst.

Three hands touched it all at once: two Oregon players, and an Oklahoma player all touched it at the same time while in the air. (Remember - once the ball bounces, interference is legal.) Since no one recovered, the ball should be been re-kicked.
@dawsondudark8 жыл бұрын
Incorrect.
@idanoreilly7 жыл бұрын
No, correct; because no body at all recovered. Listen for the whistle at point 0:22. The ball is on the turf when the whistle blows and nobody at all has possession. You can't ethically award it to either team if no one had it when the whistle blew!!
@BamBamMusic6 жыл бұрын
Actually you are not correct. Because nobody recovered the ball, in the rule book under Free Kicks at Rest, it states the ball belongs to the receiving team at the dead ball spot, which would be where it was when they blew the whistle. The rulebook also states "The ball belongs to the receiving team at the dead-ball spot, unless the kicking team is in legal possession when the ball is declared dead. " under Free Kick Caught or Recovered. Well, since nobody had possession, the ball should have went to Oklahoma in both instances. This isn't about ethics, it's about the rules in place.

@@BamBamMusic THANK YOU. It's insane that, in the moment, everyone focuses on the touch point and by whom- which, yes, has since been shown to have been called wrong -- but even so, NO ONE ever discusses the possession angle. So, Amazing Bad Call #2 - even worse than the "who touched" call/ "moot touch inside the 10 yards" double whammy. Either give it to OU as possessed, or touched too early by Decks... or....Say you blew it dead too fast, no one had possession, and it goes to the receiving team by rule.

Looks like Malcolm Kelly may have reached in and deflected the ball. His hand is between the hands of the Oregon player and the ball bounces as if it hit something from above. And once Chung dives on top of the ball the referee blows the play dead immediately.
