@danevans33334 жыл бұрын
It would be awesome, but sadly the world doesn't really recognise Wales as existing. We got crushed so mucb earlier than anyone else did that we're just seen as a little extension of England. Ireland are known worldwide as Irish and having their own traditions, Scotland are known worldwide as Scottish and having their own traditions, even if both are known by stereotypes and the like. Wales is seen as just more England, which is very much isnt, of course, but it's because of this that we wouldn't get a film about Owain Glyndwr like Braveheart: there's just not enough audience for it sadly.

I’m a welsh noble, I mobilised Wales against the English Fought King Henry Four because Wales abhorred English rule But my uprising, it went a bit wrong and this song tells the surprising tale. Owain Glyndwr! Welsh hero, of the hour! It all began ’cause my neighbour, a vindictive man, Baron Grey De Ruthen was spreading untrue things ’bout me! Said I was a rebel who planned to repel England’s king, Not really true but more than a few were convinced. So, I decided, to take up the mantle, was given the handle of Prince. Of Wales! You don’t have to be Welsh to feel Welsh pride. Even kingsman Henry Hotspur ended up on my side. We claimed Welsh ground, then in Hereford rain meant, The king nearly drowned, washed away in his tent. So partly thanks to Welsh weather, I was crowned, think I’m gunna dance now! I had great plans for new government, new law and churches. But Henry the Fourth had dried off and revenge was his game. We were defeated, he blocked supplies to Wales, Our crops failed and starvation came. Owain Glyndwr! My family sent to the tower. As Welsh towns fell, and we all know that never ends well. So I disappeared but my name is revered throughout Wales. Owain Glyndwr! Father of the fight for Welsh power. Welsh legend holds that should Wales ever need someone bold. I’ll rise up to help them, I’m due, I’m six hundred years old! Henffych well i’are arwr mawr Cymru Owain Glyndwr!

According to Greg Jenner, who is a historian and helped with the TV show, on his podcast he said that they have to change his name to the English pernounacction instead of using the Welsh version cause it wouldn't of fit with the rhythm of the song - they got a lot of angry letters from angry Welsh parents 😅😅😅

I knew about this guy's existence before i first saw this song, only because in year 7 my history teacher showed a video about this instead of the Peasants' Revolt by accident.

i love this obviously because of jims sweet vocal power, but mainly of the guys in the background singing "so whats new pussycat" in the most grandiose baritone

It's mispronounced on purpose to fit with the songs thyme and speed. At the end Jim says it right with Owain Glindoor

I'm guessing none of them (lol) however, the pronunciation of Owain Glyndwr's name is arguably correct because they are most likely pronouncing the Anglicised version of his name (Owen Glendower), it being easier to rhyme and all

I get that bit they could at least pronounced the actual welsh sentence correctly😂 still fair play to them for trying

Lyrics: I'm a welsh noble, I mobilised Wales against the English (He is Owain Glyndwr) Fought King Henry Four because Wales abhorred English rule (It's not unusual) But my uprising, it went a bit wrong and this song tells the surprising tale. Owain Glyndwr Welsh hero of the hour. It all began 'cos my neighbour, a vindictive man, Baron Grey De Ruthen was spreading untrue things 'bout me. Said I was a rebel who planned to repel England's king (From the green grass of home) Not really true but more than a few were convinced (We were ready to fight) So, I decided to take up the mantle, was given the handle of Prince Of Wales. You don't have to be Welsh to feel Welsh pride Even kingsman Henry Hotspur ended up on my side. We claimed Welsh ground, then in Hereford rain meant The king nearly drowned, washed away in his tent. So partly thanks to Welsh weather I was crowned Think I'm gonna dance now! I had great plans for new government, new law and churches (So what's new, pussycat?) But Henry the Fourth had dried off and revenge was his game (Thought that he'd help himself) We were defeated, he blocked supplies to Wales Our crops failed and starvation came. Owain Glyndwr! My family sent to the tower As Welsh towns fell, and we all know that never ends well. So I disappeared but my name is revered throughout Wales. Owain Glyndwr! Father of the fight for Welsh power. Welsh legend holds that should Wales ever need someone bold I'll rise up to help them, mind you, I'm six hundred years old. Henffych well i'are arwr mawr Cymru Owain Glyndwr!

In fairness, he's speaking the Anglicised version of it, so he's not entirely wrong in his pronounciation of it, as this is what the English forces would have referred to Glyndwr with at the time. Plus its probably a lot easier to rhyme owen glindower than owain glyndwr. I'm just glad it was covered here tbh. Learning about him in history lessons in school was so bloody boring, but I've repeated this song that many times in the past few days I've gone and researched loads more about him and fuck me the mans a legend. So for that, I can forgive the Anglicised pronounciation
