In 1804, when Beethoven wrote his Third Symphony, he did not entirely hear the news that Napoleon had declared himself Emperor of the French. However, he did hear the words: "Napoleon" and "Emperor," and flying into a rage when hearing how his hero had turned into a villian, he renamed his Third Symphony Eroica instead of Napoleonica, which was the original name. That is why the second movement of this symphony is called "The Funeral of the Hero," because the spirit of the hero in Napoleon had died, in Beethoven's eyes. He began going deaf shortly after he wrote his Third Symphony. Twenty years later, he wrote the Ninth Symphony, by which point he was completely deaf. He had created the Romantic Era, and the reason he wrote only nine symphonies instead of 46, like Mozart, was because he was deaf. Mozart was far more prolific than Beethoven, and because he served in the court of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, he was required to write more symphonies (even though his father infamously passed them off as his own). Mozart met Marie Antoinette when he was four and she was eight. When he himself turned eight, he performed for George III, and at ten, he performed for Louis XV. Beethoven was not so much as a Kapellmeister, but since Haydn, Mozart, and all Salieri taught him, it is no wonder he became a titan in his own right, despite being deaf.

15:50: The lies about Richard III are more like half-truths. Here are five myths about him that the Richard III Society debunked: 1. Richard III had sclerosis and one shoulder higher than the other. But that does not make him a hunchback, or anything resembling that. 2. His "withered arm," was NOT withered in the slightest. 3. George, the Duke of Clarence, was executed in secret at the behest of Edward IV. Richard had nothing to do with it. The idea that he was drowned in a barrel of wine is an urban legend created by the Tudors. 4. By all accounts, Richard III loved his nephews and put them in the Tower to keep them safe. There is no evidence that he murdered them, and it's actually more likely that Henry VII killed them. 5. Richard III was riding a horse when he was killed. It makes absolutely zero sense for his last words to be: "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" If anything, it would have been better if Shakespeare made him say: "Et tu Brute?" which weren't Julius Caesar's last words... I guess you can stop pretending that Shakespeare wrote any truth in his plays. All of them were lies.

A few things are different in comparison to the show. George II instead of talking about his father dying of diarrhoea says he did. And Richard III said he didn’t kill his dad instead of his wife’s dad. Simon Farnaby also plays George III in George IV’s song instead of Lawry Lewin.

Ha! I really enjoyed this show. Reminds me of when my grandparents used to take me to the proms when I was younger, but this injects history into music, fantastic!
