Alan Wilder is responsible for the ivory tickling on this one, as was the case with most live piano on the album. This piece of music was what played as the band took to the stage on the Music for the Masses tour, as can be seen on 101. The tension would whip the audience into a frenzy, the band could have easily commanded the fans to overthrow governments and they would have obliged. The male choir parts were recorded fairly quickly by Martin. The female/falsetto choir part heard later in the song was also used during the middle eight of I Want You Now, as well as for an alien-like sound you will hear on Violator's "Blue Dress". The timpani was recorded live in the studio basement per album producer David Bascombe. A percussive part used for Nothing is in use later in the song, as are several Emulator II factory library disks (tubular bells, pipe organ, etc).

Hi Seph, like your Devotee Series. Thanks for the nice reactions. Pimpf is the Outro of the album (Agent Orange isn’t an official album track). And it was the Intro for their live performance on the „concert for the masses“ tour. (With the 101 concert video) The first piano samples starts and 80,000 went crazy. For me Pimpf is a good example what Depeche Mode makes so unique and important still today. Their experimental sounds and the aim not to produce music for the mainstream. For me DM is the most successful Indie-Band. Greetings from Germany Michael

One of Depeche Mode great instrumental, on their 1987 album, music for the Masses you are reviewing in your videos. It provides mixed feelings for most of the DM fans and not in bad way, I mean the main theme and name of the song refers to all those young children in Germany during nazi occupation enrolled in their youth system in order to make the best soldier answer to the system, that s why the tune is so dark and solemn at the same time .but it was,so the opening of their music for the masses tour back in 1987/1988 that still gives the chill and vibes to most dm fans as it was captures in their famous live video / documentary by D.A. Pennebaker. Great instrumental song by Depe he Mode with great ambient feeling a really nice masterpiece done by Martin Gore and Alan Wilder at that time. I can only advise you to watch the music video done by Anton Cobijn at that time that quite illustrates well this sing. And all the members are singing (and their voices mixed and rearranged) for for what you hear in this song. Just as you mentioned it some of Depe he Mode videos are quite suited for some videos I remember when I was younger and played some video games kn my computer back in the 80's and 90's I often lowered the musical background of the game and played some depeche mode songs that fitted the mood of the game I was playing, ,mostly adventure games or RPGs like dungeon masters or ad&d stuff or some of the first alone in the dark.. real good . Even some Recoil stuff (Alan Wilder will project ) fits perfectly with these... cool video as usual. It's ni e to see your input to these classics Depeche Mode songs.

So that last bit was how they closed the album, a little interlude. The instrumentation was a combo of real and samples. The piano was real, and those drums were thymphony laying around the studio. I think the choir was partly their voices and from classical records, all sampled. B-sides! Agent orange, Pleasure Little Treasure, Route 66, Stjarna, Moonlight Sonata.

Told you! Dave and Martin said in the commentary track on the DVD of '101': Dave Gahan: "'Pimpf' was something to do with the Hitler Youth, or something like that, wasn't it?" Martin Gore: "Yes, it was an instrumental that we originally started recording for - I think - the B-side of 'Never Let Me Down Again', and we liked it so much that we ended up putting it on the 'Music For The Masses' album." When Depeche Mode was interviewed about the songs on the '101' CD for the April 1989 issue of French magazine 'Best', Alan Wilder said (translated from French): "All of our concerts on the tour started with 'Pimpf', so now whenever I hear this melody, it evokes a very precise memory: it was a signal that we were about to enter the stage, a moment when I started to have cold sweats. 'Pimpf' was originally only a B-side, but it ended up being put on 'Music For The Masses'. I think that's what the young members of the Hitler Youth were called. This music reflects the political climate that was occurring at the time of the rise of Nazism. It's because of its orchestral, quite distressing aspect."

Hi Seph! Here’s a comment and an idea for you. I’ve been a fan of your DM reactions for a couple of weeks now. It's kind of my daily evening routine now: I sit down with a cup of cocoa and some nice sandwiches in front of my laptop and go “Ok, time for a new DM reaction from Seph!”. I quite like that you are showing lyrics on the screen, because previously with some of their songs I totally missed some of the crucial lines - I have a new kind of appreciation for "Something to do" now that I know he's singing about putting her leather boots and her pretty dress on, haha. So thank you for doing this! An idea: There is a DM song from Violator album called “Sweetest perfection”. It would be great if you could do a single video, first reacting to the *demo* version of this song (although you probably won’t find a video with lyrics), and then immediately after reacting to *studio* version. Why do I think this particular demo/studio pair would make for a great video? 1). They are quite different (as opposed to some of other demo versions of songs), so I believe listening to the demo first will not "spoil" the studio version - if anything, it will only whet your appetite for the "full" version. 2). It would be a perfect illustration of how long is the road from song's conception to its final version and how much work goes into it. 3). Demo version is over a minute shorter than the studio one and even if you think two songs in a row would not be interesting enough in a single video, you can always speed up some parts of demo version in the editing or something (like you did in the past with some of the songs). So overall I think it would be a satisfying experience both for you and for viewers. I know that you are getting a lot of ideas here in the comments, but I hope you will find this one worthy of your channel. Anyway - whether you like this idea or not, thanks again for doing all this!
