I could write an essay on this subject I really could, I’ve been driving my own truck now for 20 years (obviously not the same one) I’m 45 and I’ve seen all sorts on the roads, it’s getting worse that is for sure - lack of education and modern cars being far too powerful yet safe are a terrible combination, safe of course until lack of knowledge is at the helm ….. combine that with all the distractions the modern day phone has to offer and it’s only heading one way. @@tomharper2709 Exactly what I was thinking Tom. Probable the worst move ever these lease/hire cars. Back in the day, when you passed your driving test, you bought an old banger with a smaller engine to keep the insurance cost down and you drove much more carefully. You didn't want to make a claim on your insurance, have to fix your damaged car through non vehicle collisions, or have to replace the car because the insurance payout would never match the "value" of the car (or the price of the car you had to buy to replace it). Not something I make a habit of , but I won’t say I don’t do, however tailgating, no, not intentionally , but sometimes you’re just trying to maintain momentum for example approaching or going up a hill and you hope the person in front wakes up and gets going but sadly not always the case and you have to back off the gas….. like I said, a whole other discussion 👍

After I passed my test (nearly 30 years ago), I was offered an additional day course, provided for free by the local police/council. It included defensive driving tips, a ride in a police car, a skid pan course and of course a slideshow of horrific accidents. What I learned on that course saved my neck several times. I really think something like that ought to be part of the driving test.

When I was around 14 there was crash survivors that used to come into school (in Scotland) and they’d tell you all about the horrific accidents they were involved in and the long term impacts, but people definitely seemed to forget this by the time they turned 17. Alongside the theory and practical tests, there should be some sort of mandatory workshop where learners are taught/reminded of the dangers not only to yourself but your passengers and other motorists. It’s far too often we see manic drivers - as a driver it gives me the fear and I know i’m not the only one.

A similar thing happened in my school a few years back (Probably 14 or 15 at the time). They brought in a totaled Ford on the back of a trailer, airbags and all. Showed the collision and then described the injuries. Horrifying to look at. I'm 18 now in college and learnt to drive last year when I was 17. It honestly scares me that I have to share the road with some people who I know are utter idiots. I've known them for almost 7 years at this point and know they don't have 2 braincells to bash together. One day walking out of college, crosssing the road: - They're driving towards me but I have enough time to get to the central pavement in the road (The thing which helps you cross) - I start crossing at a reasonably fast walking pace, would get to the center with more than enough time - Hear a downwards gear change up to like 5k rpm and hard acceleration - I look to my right and see them coming towards me, moving towards the middle of the road - I basically run to the central pavement behind the plasic bollard sign things - They drive up and over the edge of the kerb less than 25cm away from my feet while laughing Absolute idiots, how did they manage to pass their test and how have they not already lost their license? (Also, how did their tire not pop lol?) Lets just say that after experiencing that, I'm always careful to look out for people I may know when crossing the road 😂

In year 11 we were forced to attend an assembly for 2 hours which covered things like what happens if you drink/drug drive, use your phone, it had several horrifying videos, including the one where the car flips, goes over a fence and kills a little girl playing in the garden. Yet I know most of the people I went to school with have for sure used their phones whilst driving or have drunk drove. Videos like this last for maybe the afternoon. They're soon forgotten. Best thing Governments can do to stop this is to invest in technology for cars. Make all future models have cameras that read speed signs and don't allow you to go above it. Make mobile phone companies force your mobile into airplane mode if it detects you're in a moving car without the option of removing this (iPhones have this capability, they just currently allow you to turn it off). Have the government set up a site which means you can't sell your vehicle to anyone unless they have a valid license and insurance. At the moment I'm sure you can sell your car privately to anyone, and it's their responsibility to have the insurance and license and the one selling it doesn't face the consequences. I'd change this.

More education? What more can they do? I've seen countless videos etc of the consequences of using phones, drink driving etc. Seen lots of like A&E docs with patients coming in from an RTC and I bet others have but it won't stop them. The only thing that can, now, is technology. iPhones have a feature that disables the internet on your phone when it detects you're in a moving vehicle. It can be switched off, I'd make it compulsory to be on and not be able to disable it. Some vehicles also now have cameras - these cameras read road signs, and some can force you to not go above the speed limit. I also don't understand why you can sell your car to anyone without seemingly needing proof of insurance and license. I know garages generally request it, but I don't think if you sell your vehicle onto someone privately that you do. I'd also make this compulsory and for it to be filed with the government, checked, and approved before you can sell it to them. It'll stop these yobbos who drive without insurance or a license that way. If you sell to someone without it, immediate £10,000 fine and ideally a prison sentence, too. THIS is what is needed. You can force someone to watch a video on the consequences of using your phone etc at the wheel every day before they make a journey, but I'm telling you now it won't stop many from doing so as soon as they have a text come through.

I'm 23 years old. We had in school, at elementary school many awareness "seminars". Two people came, usually women with men, tried to dig deep in us, what we think about the topic, but with our class teacher present (big fault, we didn't liked her), usually we didn't take it seriously, most of class was pulling their leg and it didn't helped much. I remember, but I don't know from where, in group of young people (including myself), we had to watch some awareness videos, and most of them wasn't believing, these situations really happen. They just taught, adults try to scare us, but reality isn't so bad (reality of drugs e.g.). So I'm not so sure, if people really learn from awareness videos, if they change, when they're not open to it. Sometimes people block themself from it, because it is for them to much, so they then believe, it's exaggerated.

I have been driving for 18 years and do that myself now. Every now and then I become hyper aware of my surroundings and mortaility. It is crazy when you are doing 60mph on a narrow road and actually realise that the cars coming the opposite direction are passing by so close and so quickly. Just one bad move by me or another driver would end everything, instantly. It's a very sobering realisation.

I think a great way of doing this would be once you’ve passed your theory test, at the end of the theory you have to sit through a mandatory two hour video of crash victims and people like Ben telling these stories because it makes a huge difference to your mindset. I drive different cars every day for a living as a mechanic and you wouldn’t believe the shit I see on the road every day, no common sense from people. It’s so frustrating. Especially regarding first response to accidents. the people moving injured people, has no one ever done a first aid course? are people genuinely thick? I just don’t understand how you can see someone injured and think moving them is a sensible thing to do.

Unfortunately, like you said with the insurance issue it’s a never ending cycle. It doesn’t matter the education you give people because if you tell a teenager they can’t do something they’re gonna go do it just to prove you wrong. End of the day, until it happens to you personally you’re not gonna stop, even then you might not. It won't stop the people that cause these accidents. They won't be driving their own car 9 times out of 10 and likely don't have a license or insurance anyway. What that would do is put additional costs and restrictions on the majority of law abiding sensible young drivers. Every major city has them, young lads driving luxury German cars with far more power than they can handle or throw away jalopies which they don't care about wrecking. Traffic signals, speed limits, other road users are far too insignificant for them to bother about as they need to show how big they are to their mates.

lot of accidents caused by drivers at the other end of the age spectrum too. This bit might be an unpopular opinion butni think the test just needs to be harder, ALOT harder and mandatory retest at 65 years old and a refresher of some sort every year after that or hand the licence in. I wouldn't even be opposed to mandatory retest every 5-7years or so for everyone if it wouldn't be such a pain in the ass to pull off tbh.

In my opinion it doesn’t matter how fast the car is. You could have a car with 90bhp or 550bhp. The car needs a driver to go fast. Obviously the bmw can go faster but everyone has the same speed limits if your going 70 in 60 or 40 in a 30 it doesn’t matter what car your driving

The faster you drive you have less time to react, a car could have really good brakes but if again if the car behind you doesn’t it won’t stop in time. The driver is responsible no matter what. Having a performance car can be really dangerous but also certain aspects make it safer like you said the brakes being better etc. But it always leads back to drivers actions like you said, a performance car like a bmw m3 sports car could be driven by someone who has slow reactions. But a little Citroen c2 could be driven by someone with really good reactions, it depends on the driver for me

In Australia, you're limited to a certain HP depending on your licence: a new (red P, 0-1 year) probationary driver can't drive the same car as a green P (1-3 years) and they can't drive the same car as a fully licensed driver. In most cases it's delineated by HP, but also by whether the car is a V8, or turbocharged, and certain cars (e.g. the Mitsubishi Evo) are completely off limits for probationary drivers in most states.

When they take their test, they should be made to watch a 5-10 minute clip of all the graphic trauma that dangerous driving can cause. The vigilante inside wants to install brick launching speed cameras, so if someone is going 10+ MPH in a 30 or less zone, they get a brick launched at their windscreen. Some people need to experience that to really understand the potential impact their dangerous driving could have on someone. I remember the old motorway cop station had a chair on a rail attached to a trailer so officers could experience what a crash at speed feels like. This should be something either every learner experiences and/or over speeders where they are forced to undergo a collision at their offending speed in a controlled environment. Some people would say these are extreme measures, but they are necessary to teach people the dangers of driving at speed. If someone causes the of a child because of dangerous driving, they should be put against a wall and have an RC car crash into them at speed. If they survive, they get to spend the rest of their life behind bars!

I was given one plausible reason why insurance has went through the roof, its that modern cars are so advanced that they have to be repaired at the dealership who have the specialised equipment, and we all know what dealers charge for repairs and thats why insurance has went up to cover the extra cost.
@RockyD
@RockyD 2 жыл бұрын
Thats not totally true. Any car can be repaired at any bodyshop. Insurance companies will use their owned approved repairers so they can audit the repair methodology and with this ensure that their customers cars are being repaired correctly using the manufacturers repair methods. Cost of insurance goes up for many variables not just because of accidents and car repairs costs. Car repairs are also often driven by the manufacturer of the cars who state you need to replace parts rather than repair. Volvo for example will not allow a repair to bumpers if more than 1mm of filler is required. Other manufacturers like merc are similar. Others not. Ford bumpers when it comes down to cost or repair over replace. Any more than a 2.5hr repair and repaint and you can buy a new bumper pre painted from Ford for the same cost or cheaper. The manufacturers do this just for resale revenue if parts! Not to mention all the technology on cars comes at a higher cost! Insurance companies and good bodyshops are monitored by a 3rd party governance with very highly knowledgeable people to ensure repairs methods are followed. Also, good bodyshops are full of very talented technicians and assessors that together make sure a car is repaired correctly and most importantly safely! Hope this info helps!!

Would you want it repaired correctly with assurance and guarantee by highly trained techs and assesors involved or joe bloggs that will just bog it full of filler and use 2nd hand parts on safety items like suspension and air bags? All the techs that are trained comes at a cost to that bodyshop. Insurance have their customers at the forefront when it comes to repairs. Yes, I work in the trade.

I had to do a theory test in order to get my Chinese driving licence. I already had my British licence so didn't need to do a practical. You do the test on a computer in a big room full of other people. If you've passed, you go to another room and are made to watch a long video of a range of utterly horrific crashes and then recite an oath that you will drive safely. Not that it seems to make much difference to most people though because the standard of driving is scarily bad. One thing I noticed was that there were an awful lot of middle aged men redoing their test because they had had their licenses taken away from them previously for dangerous driving and were having to reapply.
