A statement from director Kyle Martellaci: "When beginning work on this film I was inspired by coastal-set horror films of the 70s and 80s. The initial element was that beach setting, where I envisioned a gloomy, daytime horror film. That idea was merged with the desire to explore a story about witches, a sub-genre that, like coastal horror, I feel isn't explored as often as it could be. With the intention to create something more moody and atmospheric than traditionally scary we set off on a 3 hour drive to our location and luckily an overcast weekend followed."

I like horror captured in daytime; everything is clear, yet very creepy and interesting, no need for pitch black screen and scary sounds... I absolutely love this one!

I've tried having conversations like that with my husband with my back turned and he's always like "WHAT? I can't fucking hear you!" 😂

This one felt like an episode, a prelude almost. Had a very Lovecraftian vibe, the ritual by the sea and all, as well as the unseen coming around just at the end. I liked that the sound could be interpreted as almost anything ocean-related, or perhaps from another dimension. Her smile indicated to me it was what she had been trying to summon, or maybe she just realized her number was up. In any event, another excellent production. Thanks to all for sharing with us. And, as always, thanks to Alter for dishing up the good stuff.

*I'll tell you what my personal theory is:* The woman, of course a witch, was born talented and well-dabbled in Magick, she grew without a family so she almost totally relied on her powers in order to survive. It was so that she started to make a business out of it, she was contacted by men who had criminal or dark backstories to murder them, and she had to travel to their hometowns. In return, they paid her, not with money but with their hearts, The witch required these hearts for special rituals that would boost her gifts and increase her power. Once she arrived to this town, where it's people live under the terrorizing regime of a coven/cult and that is why the woman said "strangers are not well seen" so presumably, the cult rules the town and its citizens and probably isolate them from the outer world (the reason why they can recognize any outsider immediatly), but once they realize a more powerful magick practicioner than them has arrived, they get ready to catch her, because even if they are authoritarian over the townspeople, their powers are not as strong as the witch's. They desire power and absolute dominance both physical and magickal, but the latter one is almost nonexistent, so they attack the lady, torture her and use her to perform a ritual asking their dark deity to grant them the witch's powers. The deity (most probably Satan) recognizes the dying woman as one of his followers and that is why she is happy to see him, whether the cult/coven stole her abilities successfully is up to the audience.

Imagine walking by the seaside and seeing some lady do this ritual on the sand. I’d be freaked out 😂

Yes interesting subject Witchcraft,I've studied it for years,and it's not covered in many movies,people who get involved in witchcraft open a huge doorway for demonic possession,your movie captures the dread of the subject,the beech location is perfect and the acting wounderful,these young actresses have so much character in their faces,the music helps the feeling of darkness ,well done and thanks for posting,

I thought pretty much all aspects of this short film were really fantastic, except for the script. Everything that comes out of these characters' mouths sounds unnatural, cliche, and a bit cheesy. It's such a shame, since the acting in this is absolutely incredible. These people are obviously super talented, but their performances are held back by poor writing, which broke my immersion every time a character spoke.

It's impressive how much of a larger background world the script hints at without forcing explanations OR leaving an incoherent mess.

This is one Alter has released I am pretty happy with. Great gore effects, good story and well shot. I find many on here to be ok, but not to the raves others seem to think of every single one. I hang around for the cream of the crop they have to offer from time to time, like this one, imo. Great job film makers!

Did the blood ritual preserve her youth and beauty? Is that why she took a moment to preen and admire herself in the mirror at the start? Or did it bolster her power in general? I’m guessing the town’s folk are going to regret trying to sacrifice her to that demon as it seems she and it are pretty tight, given how happy she is when it turns up.

So curious to know if the first scene was sit at the Ottawa canal...

Beautiful and terrifying

reminds me of people in a small town i uses to live in. the town was laid back and easy going people were nice. then a new set of people started moving in. they were really creepy and lots more creepy people came. made it hard for the original people. lot of the original folk moved out. we moved to. sad because i really liked living in that just.
